ARCHIVED Should Celiacs Get Flu Shots?
happygirl replied to acousticmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
acousticmom, to answer your question-about if Celiacs get the flu worse-no, they should not. As long as they are on a strict gluten free diet and are not having complications from being glutened, their everyday life *should* be the same. That is the joy of being a Celiac (yes, I said joy!) - it is one of the few diseases-autoimmune, at that!- that we... -
ARCHIVED Is Sushi Rice Gluten Free?
happygirl replied to Anonymousgurl's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I know you have multiple food issues, and although it might be safe from gluten, many brands of rice are "enriched"....with corn products. I learned that this summer when I was reacting horribly to rice. Looked up the ingredients---and there were trace amounts of corn. Just something to keep in mind, if corn is by chance a problem for you. Not all rice... -
ARCHIVED 40 Years Old, Ttc #1 gluten-free 3 Years
happygirl replied to Loribop22's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Lori, There have been numerous threads on this topic (gluten in ..... ) and the resounding answer is no. Even if it were, unless you were allergic, it wouldn't be a problem, because in general, gluten has to reach your small intestine for the celiac reaction to occur. And, it won't through "baby practicing." It can through other means of intimacy... -
ARCHIVED The Christmas/ New Year Period
happygirl replied to Saz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hope everyone is feeling better, now that the holidays are over and we are in the comfort of our own homes! This was my third gluten free Christmas, and I am proud to say, I survived multiple events, both at home, out of town at my in-laws, and out of town with my family (10 of us, staying at my Grandma's), without being glutened. I was gone for over... -
Matt, No problem! Thats why this board is such a great resource. Thanks for giving me a little bit of background. You should be able to have a doctor's visit-there is a good chance that this is non-Celiac related, so it will be billed differently. I started having problems about 1.5 years gluten-free, and had a bunch of tests run, but they weren...

ARCHIVED Help! Starch!
happygirl replied to Izak's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Izak's Mom, Its ok, we all have our moments --- don't worry! And to re-iterate what Carla said, modified corn/tapioca starch are safe. Modified food starch *used* to be a problem because companies weren't required to list its source. Now, they aren't fully required to label it, unless it is one of the 8 main allergens, one of which is wheat. So,... -
ARCHIVED I Am New Here
happygirl replied to luvkin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
luvkin, Wow-that is awesome! Going gluten free has helped so many people, and I'm happy you were able to continue your education....that is so great! We don't really care on this board-we are here to help anyone who is on a gluten free diet. Sometimes its easier to help answer questions when we know a little bit more background. Laura -
Calvert-makes sense. Yes, in that instance, it would be a pre-existing condition. Some companies follow through on it-thats why I was asking. I had the same problem (not with Celiac) and learned it was worth my while to buy cheapy insurance in the interim, so then I had "insurance" for that infamous 63 day period. If you did have it at some point, they...

ARCHIVED I Am New Here
happygirl replied to luvkin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board----we are happy you have found us! There are two different sets of advice I give....one to people who have yet to go gluten free and want to know about testing, and one for those who already went gluten free. Since you are already gluten free---I agree with your doctor. If you switch doctors, you might get arguments if you have... -
ARCHIVED Mayonaise And Ketchup
happygirl replied to Daisy Duke's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Lisa, Just so you know, distilled vinegar, regardless of the source, IS safe. https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodi...-50107552071.07 The American Dietitic Association has stated so. I believe that their apprehension is based on old information (for years, vinegar was a serious worry) and worries about the new labeling law. I am going to contact... -
ARCHIVED Dean's Sour Cream
happygirl replied to AmandaD's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Techically, you have to know everything that goes in your mouth. That being said, most sour creams are safe. Some reduced fat used to say "modified food starch" but now, if its wheat, it has to be identified-and the one I've seen, its corn starch. I don't have Dean's in front of me to check, but rennet, to my knowledge, is safe and is on this... -
ARCHIVED What To Do About Other Allergies
happygirl replied to rutland's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I think you will find an allergist/immunologist (in some areas, they are the same) will be your best bet. In general, not only will they know about allergies, but they should know about intolerances. Its hard to know if its an intolerance or allergy...as they often have the same symptoms. Most docs don't think its an allergy if you don't have hives though... -

ARCHIVED Cross-contamination?
happygirl replied to AliceW's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Alice, By law, pure spices (i.e., thyme, rosemary, oregano) have only one ingredient in them-the spice. They are safe. Of course, it is different with spice/seasoning packets, which like any product, can have gluten. Same with teas. Shirley's above advice is correct! Good luck-happy to hear you are doing well on the diet. Laura -
If you are on a strict gluten free diet, then the fact that you are a Celiac should not really matter but so much. Celiac has been shown to cause problems when mothers are undiangosed/not following the diet. Has your full Celiac panel been run to rule out if you are doing well on the diet? Good luck and I hope you find some answers and get results

ARCHIVED People With Clinical Depression And Anxiety
happygirl replied to Mtndog's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is a great topic, and I appreciate those who have and are sharing their stories. I do want to add that there is a large number of PhD, MD, MS, MFT, LCSW, etc. out there who have spent their lives doing research at universities and other institutions, that perform solid research on depression, without being funded or influenced by pharmacy companies... -
