  1. very rarely do i shop at health food stores. most of my products are mainstream gluten free products (i.e., normal brands that happen to have something that is gluten free). i supplement with some tinkyada rice pastas (which I can get at my grocery store). Other than that, I do get "treats" every so often....but I would say that 90% of my foods are ...
  2. I personally would continue on the gluten free diet, very strictly. I would supplement with immodiums (some are not safe...make sure you read.) as needed. the other thing: if you had a colonoscopy, it would NOT show damage for celiac. A colonoscopy is NOT the correct procedure for dx'ing Celiac. Celiac damage is found in the small intestine, which...
  3. carla.......i love your new pic. you are too cute!!!!
  4. the new food labeling laws, for things like modified food starch, say that if it has one of the 8 main allergens (i.e., wheat), it must be labeled as such (modified wheat starch, or modified food starch-wheat). If it says 'modified food starch' then legally it must not be wheat.
  5. 1. Celiac is not an allergy, it is an autoimmune disorder. 2. Celiac cannot be cured, at this point. Research is still figuring out why some people have it. but that is another discussion. 3. yes, there are people like that out there. (you might also hear of people who "had" celiac as a child and "outgrew" it. if that is the case, it was never Celiac...
  6. girl, i would've thought so too.....but it is not the case for all of them, unfortunately! hopefully, word will get out....
  7. Sue, I hope I didn't come across as harsh, I just want everyone to be as gluten free as possible. Being gluten-lite isn't but so much help. It took me a LONG time to learn how to order...I wouldn't stand up for myself, I was too embarrassed, etc. Finally, I realized that by eating out and not being careful, it was my OWN fault....I might as well have just...
  8. You need to be eating a good amount of gluten for the tests to be positive.
  9. They are both indicative of having a problem with gluten. They are ALL used for Celiac, not just the tissue transg, although it is a highly suggestive one. Please do not pass along incorrect information. It is a Celiac PANEL, not just one blood test. Where do you live? I would recommend finding a dr. who is knowledgable about Celiac. I'm sure...
  10. riayn, its not the same story (in the women's magazine), but here is one that was posted recently...a newspaper article. it is great! Open Original Shared Link
  11. due to new food labeling laws, all flavorings must list any WHEAT if it is in its source. that would probably be your most likely culprit (wheat, as opposed to rye or barley). if in doubt...call.
  12. many "normal" peanut butters are naturally gluten free. just read the labels. we have used peanut pan pb in our house.
  13. I just moved to northern VA from Virginia Beach! I know it is hard to make a move. If you don't get a lot of responses on the board, your best bet would be to find a support group down there and contact them. Also, look up whole foods, trader joes, etc and see if they have stores down there. do a search for restaurants that you eat at (chains) in...
  14. You may not have Celiac, but you could be non-Celiac gluten intolerant. Try taking gluten out and see how you feel. I don't know what to tell you, but it might be worth finding a Celiac SPECIALIST in your area. General GI specialists do no good unless they are knowledgable about Celiac. All that being said....welcome to the board! We are happy to have...
  15. As with any processed food, it completely depends on the brand and ingredients. There are numerous brands of bacon that are safe....like with ANY food, you just have to read the label. If you have questions about ingredients in yours, feel free to post. But there are many that are safe...I eat it pretty often
  16. Numerous possibilities: 1. peanuts themselves are gluten free. so unless there was a risk of cross contamination, it probably wasn't direct gluten. 2. if it wasn't gluten, your body probably hasn't healed, and it might just not been able to handle it, for some unknown reason. 3. you have some sort of intolerance/allergy (etc) with peanuts. those are...
  17. Let's see....my doc at JH (that I love!) says that no matter what we want to call it, gluten is a problem for me (Celiac vs. gluten intolerance vs. sensitivity vs. allergy, he doesn't care). my doc at NIH was kind of on the fence....he recognized that gluten bothered me, but didn't know about "intolerance." a doc who used to be a leading armed forces...
  18. I have not had any problems, but I would call beforehand and tell them. Its hard to generalize about if "it" is safe, versus if a specific brand is safe. Or, you could discuss your concerns with your dentist and ask to see the ingredients. My dentist doesn't use anything until I've okay'ed it. My guess though, would be that most are safe.
  19. almost all "normal" cereals have gluten in them. there are a small number of those that don't, but even their ingredients tend to change, so you always have to read. i'm not a cereal eater, but i'm sure someone will chime in.
