ARCHIVED Medical Marijuana For Symptom Control
elonwy replied to raisin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I smoke, so I'll pipe up here. (pun not intended, but enjoyed) I get a definite benefit from smoking when I have gluten symptoms. It calms the raging belly storm and eases the pain. It affects my appetite in the opposite way, when I get glutened I want to eat constantly, and the weed actually chills that out. As for the judgement issues... I think there... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Potstickers
elonwy replied to Stephster's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have had more or less success using rice wrappers that I have found at the local asian grocery, like the ones for Thai spring rolls. The look isn't quite right, but they tasted really good. You have a recipe for gluten-free wrappers? Could you post it? Thanks Elonwy -
ARCHIVED Does Any One Have Problems Eating Kettle Brand Potato Chips?
elonwy replied to alamaz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I eat them with no reactions. Sadly they discontinued the Dill & Sour Cream flavor, which was one of the most amazing things ever. *sigh* -

ARCHIVED Taco Bell
elonwy replied to valeriek's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The Taco Bell seasoning used on the beef has oats in it. (edited for accuracy) I'll grab a pintos and cheese and small nachos there when its the only place to eat, usually on some long road trip when I'm trapped in the middle of BFE. Other than that... meh. Ingredients are here: Open Original Shared Link One more edit: The chips are fried with wheat... -
ARCHIVED Toddler Snacks?
elonwy replied to odcdinah's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Kinnikinnick makes a "graham style" cracker that is excellent. I think this is a new product, it just showed up on the shelves of my local health food store. They are a little harder than normal graham crackers, but they seem like they would be a good kid snack (I don't have any yet, so I'm just guessing here) -
ARCHIVED Lundberg Rice Cakes, Or Something Making Me Sick?
elonwy replied to raisin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Lundberg no longer makes anything that isn't gluten-free. They specifically reformatted some of their products which had barley malt in them to be gluten-free. Unless you are developing a rice intolerance, I would suspect other things long before Lundberg. I get Celiac like reactions from bell peppers, eggs and pears. I second the idea of simplify, then... -
There was an article in I believe the NY Times? a couple months ago ( I can't find the link, but its somewhere on this board) where they tested out these so-called "good manufacturing practices" which do have an FDA standard in regard to allergens because some children had gotten allergic reactions to food that should never have had allergens in them. I no...

Hehe. Thanks. I'm one of those annoying people who grills everyone within an inch of their life, then calls back the next day to make sure I'm getting the right answer, then asks the manager at the store anyway. *sigh* Drives my friends a bit bonkers, but I just hate being sick and don't trust people who don't have the disease to pay attn to every detail...

Here's the deal with In N Out. Everything is gluten-free except the bun. The Sauce itself is gluten-free. HOWEVER, they use a knife to dip in the sauce and spread on the buns, so they will not say it is gluten-free due to CC. I get my burgers with ketchup and mustard (which is in squirt bottles) and ask them to prepare my burger away from the bun area. They...

ARCHIVED What Are You Serving At Your Superbowl Party?
elonwy replied to amybeth's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm going to be making a seven layer bean dip (the top layers is beans in the shape of a football) and buffallo enchiladas. Its just the two of us, and I don't really care except for the part where I get to have bean dip. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Pancake Mix And Gluten Free Oat Meal
elonwy replied to BrainStorm-wow's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I nth the Pamela's Pancake mix, great stuff. I've tried a bunch of others, and its the best. I just recently started using Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, and they seem to be pretty good, but I am annoyed by the occasional husk. -
Wheat Glucose Syrup In Mentos
elonwy replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Corn is heavily subsidized by the government here, which is why most of our products in the US are made from corn based syrups and starches. -
Wheat Glucose Syrup In Mentos
elonwy replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mentos originate in the netherlands. It is much more likely to find wheat based glucose syrup in candies made in Europe and the UK than in the US. Mentos have never been gluten free, and the company does state that. I would not worry about random sources of glucose syrup with US based companies, but anything outside of the US I have suspicions of. -
Cafe Mariposa in Oakland, Ca. Though they are mostly a bakery, you can get pizza slices during the day and a beer to have with it Rissoteria in NY is half gluten-free, and having pasta and pizza and sandwiches that are safe along with gluten-free desserts totally counts with me. I need to go back to NY....

ARCHIVED Hilton Hawaiian Village gluten-free/ Cf Experience
elonwy replied to Lisa16's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Heh. I eat at home when I'm there (my mom lives in Volcano) because Hilo side is kinda limited that way. My mom has done a good job at getting the health food stores in Hilo to start carrying more gluten-free foods, but you get out side of town and you're pretty much on your own. I wouldn't eat at Volcano House if you paid me even before gluten-free. -

Yay that is so awesome, anything that spreads more good info in HI is fantastic. I agree with Ken, the Big Island is the best (I'm soooo homesick). -

Its pretty gross. It works well as a doorstop though. Check out Kinnikinnick or the Whole Foods Bakery stuff if you have access to them. -
ARCHIVED Wedding Planning- gluten-free Caterer?
elonwy replied to elonwy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah the whole plan is to do it at the house in Alameda and walk down to the beach for the talking bit. I'm keeping the whole thing under $2000. The most expensive thing is going to be the cake. I'm not doing any kind of sit down meal, just pupu platters sitting around, like any party type deal, and since its at the house I want everything to be gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Wedding Planning- gluten-free Caterer?
elonwy replied to elonwy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I checked out Hy-Vee online, they aren't out here, but your reception sounds great. My family won't be here, since flying from HI is just so expensive, so its just going to be friends hanging at my house with a tiny ceremony stuck in the middle. The more I'm researching the more I just want to make plates myself. Whole Foods wants $90 for a cheese plate?... -
ARCHIVED Wedding Planning- gluten-free Caterer?
elonwy posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm wondering if anyone knows of a caterer in the Bay Area, preferably East Bay, who deals with gluten-free. My fallback is Whole Foods, cause I'm doing an hors d'oeuvres type reception event instead of a sit down meal, but I'm just wondering if anybody knew of anyone else. I did find this cake place: Open Original Shared Link which looks AMAZING!!.... -
I just did similar thing with Annie's Mac and Cheese. The regular box is dark blue, the gluten-free box is light blue. In a hurry at the store and hungry I grab a couple boxes. Go home, boil the pasta, taste test for done, then as I'm getting ready to add the cheese I think "That texture seems off" and I check the box again. Sure enough I grabbed a box of...

ARCHIVED Tomatoes -- Can't Have
elonwy replied to GlutenGalAZ's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I can eat tomatoes, but I just don't like them. Not even a big fan of catsup. I often make "white pizza" where I use ricotta for the "sauce". Pesto is also a good sauce for pizza and works well with Pepperoni. As for pasta, I'm a white sauce fan. I'll make a basic roux (I use white rice flour), then add veggies or shellfish or chicken or whatever I'm in the...
