ARCHIVED 365 Brand Pumpkin
elonwy replied to runnerkat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm sure the pumpkin is fine, especially since its now really that processed. However, I was less that thrilled with the flavor and texture. There is no substitute for Libby's for me. (my store was also out so I bought and used this). -
ARCHIVED Spam-gluten Free?
elonwy replied to Amber M's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Spam is gluten free. I eat it all the time (I grew up in HI) and never get sick from it. I'm a little suspicious of Bird's Eye, I got a very non-committal letter from them a couple years ago in regards to gluten and a lot of their products do have gluten in them, so it may be a CC issue with them. Also, if you did not make the butter sauce there are good... -
I'm a huge fan of fox cider. Says gluten-free on the bottle, comes in apple, pear and black currant. Super nummy stuff. I'm also a fan of Magners over ice, but that can be hard to find in the US away from large Irish populations. Ace cider is also gluten-free.

ARCHIVED Cream Cheese Frosting
elonwy replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Once you see how easy it is and how much better it tastes, you'll never go back. It works best with a mixer, but you can do it by hand, I have many times. Just remember to take the butter and sour cream out of the fridge well beforehand to let them soften. Hope its delicious. -
ARCHIVED Cream Cheese Frosting
elonwy replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I always just make this from scratch. Takes like ten minutes: * 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened * 1/2 cup butter, softened * 2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract In a medium bowl, cream together the cream cheese and butter until creamy. Mix in the vanilla, then gradually stir in the confectioners... -
ARCHIVED Special Christmas Menus
elonwy replied to ang1e0251's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm going to be cooking a goose this year. I'm thinking blackberry demi-glace to go with it, instead of cranberry sauce. I'm going to be having Kinnikinnick pan rolls (found them in the frozen section), and I'm thinking for veg I might do glazed carrots. I'm still trying to come up with something green. I'm also thinking of doing baby potatoes, I might toss... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Gingerbread House- Help
elonwy replied to johalex's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Turns out they are completely sold out already. I guess they didn't count on the huge response. Hopefully they will do it again next year though. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Gingerbread House- Help
elonwy replied to johalex's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
They were $13.50 each, plus shipping. It probably costs a bit more, but as far as time is concerned right now, its worth every penny to me. My favorite part is the building not the baking anyway. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Gingerbread House- Help
elonwy replied to johalex's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I just got my house kits from cakeartsupplies in the mail and I am super happy. They came individually wrapped with the ingredients listed on the outside (they used the Pamela's mix as a base) and assembly instructions. They smell divine even through the shrink wrap. I'm going to make them this weekend, I am super excited. -
ARCHIVED Question About Tortillas...
elonwy replied to JanieInCanada's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The food for life Rice tortillas are gross to me but the Trader Joe's Rice Tortillas are great for quesadillas. -
I work at a place with an almost full kitchen. We are served breakfast, have a fully stocked fridge of snacks, sandwich fixings, etc and lunch is ordered in every day. When I first started here I told them not to worry about it, but they insisted I be included. They order me gluten-free cereal on the grocery delivery, and make sure that I get included on...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Gingerbread House- Help
elonwy replied to johalex's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Gluten Free Pantry has a mix, and Pamelas has a recipe on their web site using one of their mixes. There are two bakeries selling premade house kits this year, www.thesensetivebaker.com and www.cakeartsupplies.com. Neither has them up on their web sites, but they are available via phone order. -
The sensitive Baker www.thesensetivebaker.com is making kits this year (you may need to call them to get it) and so are these people: Open Original Shared Link who you definitely have to call to order it (its not on their web site, but they do have it). I have eaten other things at the sensetive baker and they have good stuff, the cakeartsupplies people are...

ARCHIVED Which gluten-free Brands Do You Trust 100%?
elonwy replied to Dietcokehead's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I trust the ones like Glutino, Enjoy Life and Kinnikinnick, who use dedicated facilities and their entire product lines are about catering to the celiac population, as opposed to companies like Wellshire who make gluten free things as an afterthought to their standard product lines. -
ARCHIVED First Gluten Free Thanksgiving
elonwy replied to Live2BWell's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yay! This was the first one where I got to cook at home, and it came out great. We had: Cornish Game Hens stuffed with fresh sage and infused with white wine Garlic Smashed Potatoes Green Beans with toasted almonds and bacon Fresh Cranberry Sauce (I use orange peel, cinnamon and nutmeg) I made Challah bread with the gluten-free Pantry French Bread... -
ARCHIVED Frozen Or Shelf-stable gluten-free Entrees
elonwy replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just discovered these: Open Original Shared Link On the pricier side, but really good and nutritious. I haven't tried the past yet but so far the chicken ones I had were really yummy. -
ARCHIVED Pamela's Vanilla Cake Mix
elonwy replied to LauraWass's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Pamela's is definitely the one I've used to feed non-gluten-free people. Its my favorite, as the flavor is much the same. The texture is much denser, but that's really the only difference. The chocolate cake mix is just to die for as well. -
ARCHIVED Yes! You Can Make gluten-free Green Bean Casserole
elonwy replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I didn't even know vegetables came in cans... Let alone what a casserole is. Thats what growing up on a farm in HI will do to you. I make green beans lightly steamed with a little butter, crumbled bacon and roasted almond slivers. Delicious. -
I use Pamela's shortbread as a cookie crust for my pumpkin pies. People love it.

Thank you for fighting the good fight. My mom lives in Hilo and I can't tell you how many times people keep trying to give her spelt or kamut. She yells at them, but some people are just so stubborn, especially when they are convinced they are right. I will be sure to check out that market and hunt you down next time I visit home Not that I know when that...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free London Restaurants
elonwy replied to lapetit8's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I had really good luck at Giraffe's. They are a chain, and decent food. Things aren't labelled gluten-free, but the wait staff was super accommodating and I never got sick there. Tesco's (supermarket) has an awesome gluten-free section, their bread is super nummy. They over-package the heck out of their food, so the packaging is a bit odd, but don't be put... -
ARCHIVED Green's Quest Tripel Blonde Ale
elonwy replied to happygirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Green's is from Belgium and all their beers are gluten-free. Really good stuff. -
ARCHIVED It's Tarnalberry's Birthday
elonwy replied to Lisa's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Happy Birthday!!! -
I tried to participate in a Holiday Potluck pre-gluten-free. I made one of my famous pies, and was kind of excited by the prospect. I showed up early to help out and ended up being bossed around endlessly by the woman in charge. At one point someone was bringing over a large crock pot, and as I started to step out of the way she decided I wasn't moving fast...

Why don't you guys eat first and then just go hang out with them at the restaurant? That way you get to show up and hang out with the family but don't have to deal with negotiating a unfriendly restaurant. I would never try to eat there personally.
