ARCHIVED How Do I Deal With The Feelings?
darlindeb25 replied to nutralady2001's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yesterday at work, a patient and I were talking about the Edible Bouquet a patient had brought the staff as a Christmas gift. She had asked me if the chocolate covered oranges were good and I had said, "I don't know, I can't try them." She says, "Are you gluten-free?" I looked at her and said, "Yes, I have celiac disease, do you?" and that is when she... -
ARCHIVED Powdered Sugar
darlindeb25 replied to darlindeb25's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love your name Generic and that says it all!!!!! To h*** with our health, bottom line is padding their pockets. If they use the lease expensive product and charge the same price for the product, then they make more money and that is what business is all about! There are so many products out there that absolutely have no reason to contain wheat or... -
ARCHIVED Light Sensitive Upon Waking
darlindeb25 replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Well Tiffany, that's great for you, but I still stick with my original post and what Dr. Z says. I truly believe that for the safety of your eyes, you should not leave contacts on them for 24 hours a day and absolutely NEVER for 30 days at a time. I have a son that wears contacts and a nephew and we have talked about this often. My nephew had a contact... -
ARCHIVED Clueless Doctors
darlindeb25 replied to Joe Hoffman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yeah, I was thinking how lucky to be diagnosed in 6 months--WOW. I am right up there with Raven. My sister had vitamin deficiencies as a young child and had to take special liquid vitamins then and was not diagnosed until age 42, I was 45. I will say, there were years when we were not "as sick" but then the years after the birth of our children, we were... -
ARCHIVED Strange Question About *where* Some People May Break Out In Hives
darlindeb25 replied to blondebombshell's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Well, blondebombshell, that is exactly where I break out in a bright red rash whenever I get soy or corn, so yes, you can break out in a rash on your bikini line!!!! I'm speaking from experience, I have a red rash there right now!! -
ARCHIVED Light Sensitive Upon Waking
darlindeb25 replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Sad, but true! Unfortunately, I think the damage is done while we are trying to figure out what's going on, going gluten free helps stop further damage, but once other autoimmune conditions get in, they are there. Hypothyroidism is not reversible, you can try to handle it, keep it under control, but you will be on meds forever--once you have Raynauds... -
ARCHIVED Powdered Sugar
darlindeb25 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was talking to my sister last night and she said things are changing again. She is finding powdered sugar with wheat in it, just wanted you all aware--start checking it. For a very long time now, powdered sugar has been safe. She said Kroger, Meijer, and one other brand was still safe, but the Gordon Food Service brand she had gotten for the hospital... -
ARCHIVED Light Sensitive Upon Waking
darlindeb25 replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This honey--says it all!!!!! You are right, I should go to our sister office, Suffolk Ophthalmology with my medical insurance and see one of those doctors, they would probably give me prescription for it, then he would be angry huh? You are so right about doctors, they are very arrogant, so many of them any way. He is one of them. He will not admit... -
ARCHIVED Light Sensitive Upon Waking
darlindeb25 replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Gemini, the difference there is, Restasis is by prescription only and many doctor's will not give that out for simple dry eye, as they call it. I work for a very good eye doctor, but he is stubborn as h***. He refuses to say my dry eye is from celiac disease. He went as far as to tell me dry eyes are caused by usually 3 different things, autoimmune diseases... -
ARCHIVED Oh Lordy Soy Too!?
darlindeb25 replied to i-miss-cookie-dough's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I never had to give up dairy, but have had to give up nearly everything else. After gluten, soy was the next to go. I hads been gluten-free for 2 yrs when I had to give up dairy, up until then, I seemed to be doing ok. I had wanted to lose some weight and decided to try the Eat Right For Your Blood Type Diet. I am a Type A blood tpye and he tells Type... -
ARCHIVED Raynaud's Phenomenon
darlindeb25 replied to Joyous's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Raynauds is another autoimmune disease and I don't think it goes away, it may go in remission for a while though. When I went gluten free, my Raynauds did seem to go away for a while, but this winter, it has come back with a vengeance. It used to only effect a couple of my fingers, this winter, it is effecting all of my fingers. It started when I was probably... -
ARCHIVED Light Sensitive Upon Waking
darlindeb25 replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Just a note of caution for those of you who wear the Night/Day contacts. I work for a contact lens specialist and he is adamant with our patients--ABSOLUTELY NEVER SLEEP IN CONTACTS!!!!! Even if the companies tell you it is safe, it isn't. If you think about it, truly think about it, why would it be safe for your eyes to sleep in contacts? Blinking is... -

ARCHIVED 3 Years And Still Trying
darlindeb25 replied to mandy0221's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Mandy--the truth is, only you can do this. Your family can not do this for you. You have to do this. No one else can make you stop eating the foods that make you sick. You are putting them in your mouth, no one else. We feed ourselves. When you decide you have had enough and you want to feel good, then you will. Do you understand that you are slowly... -
ARCHIVED Help! Seriously Dry Skin
darlindeb25 replied to loco-ladi's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just a reminder--not all Burt's Bee's products are gluten free. Many of their products contain wheat germ oil, so be careful to read their products. I love their chapstick, especially the peppermint lip balm, but I do not have any of the other products. Anything I wanted either contained wheat germ or oatmeal and I can not have either. -
ARCHIVED Her Celiac Disease "went Away" ?
darlindeb25 replied to tiffjake's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I worked with a lady in Michigan who told me the same. Said she was celiac as an infant, but had grown out of it and maybe I would too. I am afraid one day she will find out she is very sick. A man my sister help diagnose, was doing so well. She convinced him to get his doctor to test him for celiac disease and she was right. She helped him with his... -
ARCHIVED Coffee?
darlindeb25 replied to brizzo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
With all my intolerance's, coffee has never been a problem and I am so thankful for that. It and my peanut butter, they are like the 2 comfort foods that have not been taken away. Maxwell House though, I must say, is the least favorite of all, I just found that out. It was on sale a few weeks ago and I bought it just for that reason. I have been drinking... -
ARCHIVED When Do I Give Up The Trial Diet?
darlindeb25 replied to Tranquillity's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Are you postive you have taken all gluten out of your diet? It will only take one small source of gluten to keep the monster fed and you will not see a change! It could be in a vitamin, in a med you are taking, a cereal you may not have given up.............or it could be another intoleranre too. Only you can judge. -
ARCHIVED Newbie - Test Results, Foods, Questions, Help!
darlindeb25 replied to sjs123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
To begin with, in the beginning, you should go very simple. Give you poor tummy a break and eat very simply. Rice, potatoes, chicken. Simple foods, not processed. Gluten free flours are very heavy and can upset a touchy tummy too, simply because they are new to your system. Go gluten free, give up all gluten, but go whole foods, and light for a while... -
I am thinking that it doesn't really matter where you come from anymore. I think it may be more prevalent in certain areas, but is being found in outer areas too. I read celiac is now found in some of the areas where we supply rice and flours to those who do not normally have these foods and now they are developing the disease too. I think at first we...

ARCHIVED Brand Spankin' New....
darlindeb25 replied to njbeachbum's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well neighbor, me being a NY beachbum, I think you have a good start on the thought process. Your years of diagnosis with the wrong disease is so very normal. I think 90% of us have this same problem. Well, it's safe to say a very large percent of us never get a diagnosis of celiac, we figure it out ourselves and go gluten-free without a doctor diagnosis... -
ARCHIVED Holding The Fda Responsible
darlindeb25 replied to JodiC's topic in Publications & Publicity
To be honest, I think we are ok with foods for now. I think we should place our focus on the drug industry. We need drugs to be gluten free, so we can safely take medication when we need it and not worry that what we need will make us sick. There is very little regulation on the medication we take and that needs government focus for now. Just like Pfizer... -
Wildcat, be sure to go totally gluten free though, not just wheat free. The rash to me does sound like DH, and if you are not taking all gluten out of your system, then you may have more problems. Try reading the books, "Gluten Free For Dummies" and "The Gluten Free Bible", they are both wonderful books for celiac's to read. I love the books for dummies...

ARCHIVED Breast Pain For A Week
darlindeb25 replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I just wanted say going to the doctor is the right decision. I know many of us do not have real high opinions of doctors, but at times we do have to put some truat in them. This may not have anything to do with what you are eating. Good luck! -
ARCHIVED Would You/did You Eat Peanuts?
darlindeb25 replied to alamaz's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Well, I am a celiac, my sister is a celiac, and our dad. We all enjoy our peanut butter, especially my dad and me. My sister never was much of a nut fan, but my dad and I always ate them. He has diverticulitis now and has to stay away from them, and I find peanuts themselves do bother me some, but peanut butter has remained a staple for me my entire life...
