  1. I just got my blood test back (over the phone so I don't have exact numbers). My allergist says the test is negative, but my Igt is high. He recommends an intestinal biopsy, which I've already got scheduled as well as a colonoscopy. Does anybody know what Igt is, and what it means to be high? I saw a gastrointestinal doctor, and he put me on prilosec and said I may have crones disease and/or celiac. I've also already had two other tests done on my gallblader, and the ultrasound was negative and I haven't heard back from the other scan. I'm not really sure what all these tests mean. Thanks!

  2. I know there is a Trader Joe's in or near Williamsburg. They have many gluten free products.

Williamsburg is wonderful for outlet shopping. We make our annual Christmas trip there.

If you are going into the "Old Williamsburg" the Trellis Restaurant is familiar with eating gluten free and very helpful and knowledgeable.

  3. Can anyone help with what every day foods with brand names if possible I can eat and drink. I been trying to stay gluten free. I was just drinking Gatorade and felt funny. Come to find out has glucose which is forbidden. This is not the first mistake. I am on a very tight budget due to this disease sidelined me so bad am on disability. Also the list says be careful of flavorings and colors I believe. Anyway to get more specific? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

It takes a while to get everything straight. Your Gatorade should be fine and glucose is not gluten related.

Here is a list of companies who will clearly list all forms of gluten (as in wheat, barley, malt and rye):

I hope these will be helpful. On this site in the Product thread you will find more brand name products that we have found to be safe. Good luck.

  4. Really?! I've always been afraid to even attempt to go to a chinese restaurant because of all their sauces and because the language barrier makes it even more difficult. Chinese food is probably the thing I miss most. I go to P.F. Changs every now and then which is awesome, but that's the only time I can eat chinese. Maybe I'll try it one of these days. There are a couple of them around here. I just feel like even if they say they can accomodate you, you still don't really know if they've understood. But then again, I suppose you're chances arent any worse then trying to explain it to the teenagers working in most american restaurants.

the Triumph Dining Cards are really helpful when dealing with ethnic restaurants. They come in several languages on laminate cards. I have used them several times. You can order them from this site, on the Gluten Free Mall.

  5. I have been on glutn free diet for 7 days now, except for eating rice crispies which has malt and found out after the fact. My GI gave me Dicyclomine (relaxes intestine) and Aciphex. Is anyone familiar with these and if so, do any of these meds present a conflict with recovery? In anycase I am improving but it appears there is a ways to go.

It does take a while, but glad that you are seeing some recovery.

  6. Are there any tests that are accurate for Celiacs or GI if you are on a gluten free diet? The only two that I am aware of are the IgG blood test & the endoscopy. I was told that I needed gluten in my diet for 4 - 6 wks, 3x's/day before the either of the tests would be valid. Is there any other way?

As you must be aware there are three ways to diagnose Celiac Disease:

    1. IgA Blood Panel

    2. Endoscopy/biopsy

    3. Possitive Dietary Response.

The blood test is not accurate for those who are still on the gluten free diet. The endoscopy and biopsy can be hit or miss. The dietary response is a diagnosis in itself.

Four to six weeks on a gluten diet is perhaps the minimun exposure and even that cannot insure total accuracy.

  7. Yay! Thanks so much for the sources for gluten-free blue cheese. Now, does anyone know any gluten-free brands of blue cheese salad dressing? If not, does anyone have a good recipe for it? Thanks. Ellen

These are some companies who will clearly list gluten of all forms (ie. wheat, barley, malt and rye). Kraft is one of those companies, just read their blue cheese dressing. If it's not on the ingredients list, it's just not in there and gluten free. :D

  9. Blue Cheese is NOT a no-no.

Many if not most blue cheeses are "started" with a synthetic bases. If, in the US, wheat is used as a "started" in blue cheese, it by law is required to be listed.

Cheeses in their natural form are gluten free. When cheese is processed, it may be subject to added gluten.

Meline, in Greece I do not know your labeling laws.
