  1. Can the Entrolab test distinguish between Celiac and gluten intolerance? Could an endoscopy see the difference? Which blood tests can and which can't?

    Thanks,

    Joy

Enterolabs can test for sensitivity to gluten and other things. They cannot diagnose Celiac Disease. So, the answer to your first question is no. An endoscopy with blunted villi/or scalloping may be seen and biopsy can diagnose for Celiac, but the sampling may be hit or miss.

A full (5) test Celiac Panel is recommended. There also may be some false negatives, but there are no false positives.

  2. I have now heard from more than one person that their insurance companies reimburse them for some of the cost of gluten-free food. This sounds impossible to me but I was wondering if anyone out there knows if this is true!

Don't think that I recall anyone here mentioning that.

You can, claim a percentage off you taxes. It is unrealistic to achieve the dollar amount/income required to qualify for a tax deduction and the red tape would be not worth the tax incentive (to me and I believe to most).

  3. It really helped me tremendously by taking some B-12 shots and later some sublingual (dissolved under your tongue) B-12. My memory, balance and focus improved quite a bit.

If you have not already done so, ask for a metabolic blood test which will show is you have any mineral or vitamin deficiencies. When your numbers are off, it can make you feel really bad and can make worse any depression you may have.

And please, make sure that you are totally gluten free and setting yourself up for traps. Gluten can hide everywhere.

It does get better with diligence and some time. We have all been there.

  4. Hello-

My son is almost 11 months old and seems to have a "gluten allergy"? although, bloodtests for food allergies all came back negative, as well as celiac disease. Is he too young for these things to show up now? How often should he be tested? Is there a difference between allergy and intolerance?

I've started the gluten-free/CF diet 2 weeks ago and seen a dramatic improvement. He is on Neocate formula and it has been a miracle. But, I am confused that all his tests are negative from the pediatrician. He had a swallow study because of problems with textures, but is doing better.

Is this an immune dysfunction? I keep reading about this. What kinds of testing is there to screen for this area? I am concerned about his one-year shots coming up.

Can anyone recommend a support group in the Middle Tennessee area, or a web-site I can go to? I am not getting any guidance from our pediatrician group. They think I am crazy. Please help!

Here is a link to Tennessee Support.

There are many moms with young children with Celiac or gluten allergies here. I am sure that they will be here soon.

  5. Im sorry i didnt even think of asking for prayers would be contoversial, so im sorry for doing that. I sometimes forget that not everyone prays. And i wasnt aware of the problems that arrived from the past talking about prayers or religbion. So I hope no one is upset with me for asking. If i need to edit my post asking for prayers i will gladly do so. I dont want to cause problems on this board. I have enough going on and dont want to make anyone mad at me on this forum.

But thank you for everyone that kept me in their thoughts and prayers during this so difficult time in my life. I will always be grateful to those that cared.

    Paula,

One persons prayer is another's good wishes and thoughts. I am sure that all of us wish for you peace of mind for this difficult time for you and your family. Not to worry about this tread ;)

  6. hi everybody,

well i am new on the gluten diet anyway today my mom made me potato with chicken breasts

the problem is that after i ate the meal i had 3 bowel movements separated each by about 30 min

does this means it contains gluten?! i tried to search for the wrappings but unfortunately she throwed them away

she said she cooked it with olive oil...

    waiting ur answers :(

    Hey Moe,

    Welcome to the Board!

No, it does not mean that you have consumed gluten. It will take your body some time to heal before it will except food the way it did before you got sick.

It took me many months to know what "being glutened" felt like. After several weeks of totally gluten free, you should begin to feel better by the day and your issues will become less and less.

  7. I have tried Ruby Tuesday. The choices are very limited and I would not touch the salad bar. I did find that the manager was very attentive and consulted with the chief (with the use of my Triumph Dining cards). I had a chicken dish.

At any local restaurant, I would suggest go during off dining times and sit down and discuss your options with the management/chief. When I have done that, I have found everyone very accommodating.

  8. I am new to teh gluten-Free Diet. I took my self of of it 6 or more month ago. I had chest pain for 21 years and no one could tell me why. I happened on an article giving the symptoms of Celiac and decided the to stop gluten. I am felling much better.

Back to my question. What about malt barley? I see that Rice crispies has it. Can I have them or is malt barley harmful?

    Confused!!

I'm sorry, you will have to give up the Rice Crispies. Wheat, Rye, Barley, Malt and some Oat are not to be consummed if you are on a gluten free diet.

There are several, equally as good, options to Rice Crispies. So, it's not a loss, just a trade off.

  9. Thanks for your support, all,

I still am feeling under the weather, but wow it's rough to try to be gluten free in Taiwan. Everything is cooked with soy sauce, and they never wash the pans, so you'd never know about cross contamination. On top of that, the labeling requirement isn't particularly strict, so it's really hard to know what's safe. Is there a way to tell if certain rice is glutenous? I know there is "glutenous rice," and that it's used often in Taiwanese food.

Just a quick note here...glutenous rice is gluten free. It is called that because it sticks together, but free from gluten.

Try to stick the the naked diet..meats, fish, veggies, rice, potatoes, fresh fruit. Limit you seasonings to salt and pepper. Eat as naturally as possible. It will help your healing process.

Be cautious of shared toasters, wooden spoons, scratched pots and pans, etc. from pre-gluten free cooking.

  10. Hello Everyone! I'm relatively new here, and this is my first posting. My boyfriend has Celiac. I want to get him a deep fryer for Christmas and I've been e-bay shopping for a deal. If I get one thats been barely used will it be safe? can i clean it to the point where he'll be able to use it worry free or should I only look at new ones?

    thanks :)

There is no such thing as a worry free used deep fryer. I suggest a new worry free fryer. ;)

Welcome and questions are always welcomed.

  11. djsurreal,

Welcome to this site. You look like a very normal 19 year old young man.

Many of your symptoms sound like it could be Celiac Disease and at the least a food intolerance.

I am sure that you are anxious for your blood work. If your blood work is negative, you might try the gluten free diet and see if you feel better. Many here can help you with the diet.

But while you wait for your blood work, read here and learn as much as you can. The gluten free diet is complex in the beginning, but easy to deal with once you know your way around ingredient labeling.
