ARCHIVED Could Pregnancy Have "triggered" Celiac?
hez replied to maddycat's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am almost sure that my trigger was the birth of my eldest son. I was so sick. The doctor kept doing labs and could never figure out what was wrong with me. Over three months things got back to normal so the docs and I never went any further with it. Fast forward seven years, an ectopic pregnancy and a 3 year old daughter and I became sooo sick! Again... -
ARCHIVED Icecream
hez replied to Gluten Slayer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would be very leary of getting a blizzard. Back in college (before dx) I worked at a dairy queen. They do not clean the blizzard machine between batches. So if someone ordered a oreo blizzard before you I would think the equipment would be contaiminated. Same with the milkshake machine, if someone had a malt before your milkshake. I do order their... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Know How To Reheat Gluten-free Pasta?
hez replied to beaglemania's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I would love to know what others do. I use tykanda (sp?) and while it is great the night I cook it, it falls apart when I reheat it in the microwave. Hez -
ARCHIVED Ty's Gluten Free Anniversary
hez replied to 2Boys4Me's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Linda, We are opposite! I was the tallest in my 5th and 6th grade class. I did all of my growing early on, dh was a late bloomer. I am now short, only 5'4"! So I guess my theory on little genes does not apply to your family I hope the birthday party was fun. Hez -
ARCHIVED Ty's Gluten Free Anniversary
hez replied to 2Boys4Me's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Isn't it great to be a year out! Happy Anniversary Are you and your husband big people? I ask this because it just might be that your kids are normal for their genetic make up. Both my ds and dd are small for their age (both have been tested and do not have it at this time, I am the one with celiac). However, I am small frame and so is my dh. My... -
I think I read somewhere that Outback created the gluten-free menu because someone close to the company either has celiac or knows someone with celiac. Is this true? Wish I could remember where I read this. Hez

ARCHIVED Good Appetizer Recipes?
hez replied to lizisgf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips

ARCHIVED Brown Rice Syrup
hez replied to Lisa Smith's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Lisa, I would contact the manufacturer to see if there is barley in their brown rice syrup. It is probably one of those ingredients that could be safe but you never know until you contact the company. What product is it? Hez -
ARCHIVED Glucose Fructose Syrup
hez replied to covsooze's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Keep in mind I am in the US. It sounds like this ingredient sometimes is made with corn and sometime with wheat. It would not be gluten-free if it was derived from wheat but it would be gluten-free if it was derived from corn. I am pretty sure this ingredient is used as a sweetner but must also have a starch component (would explain the wheat or corn)... -
ARCHIVED Amy's Spinach gluten-free Pizza
hez replied to mamaw's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I finally found it today! It was in my regular grocery store, King Soopers (aka Kroger) with the other Amy's pizza. I almost missed it. It also looks like it might be dairy free as well. The cheese is a soy cheese. Hez -
Russ, Welcome to the board! This is a great group to turn to for information and support. I have learned so much from this board. I look forward to hearing more! Hez

For some reason I have choosen not to worry about this. Usually the person taking the order, getting gluten filled treats and taking your money is different from the person making the drink. I go to Starbucks about 4 times a week and have not had any trouble (knock on wood). I think that you need to find what your comfort level is. None of us live...

ARCHIVED Quaker Rice Cakes
hez replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I do not trust the Quaker company. I remember reading somewhere that they have huge cc problems (not that is helpful since I can't remember the source). I just always avoid them. Hez -

ARCHIVED Anyone Have Recipes For Egg Plant
hez replied to mamaw's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Back in the day of take out chinese food my dh and I would order spicy eggplant. They usually would use the small Japanese eggplants but I see no reason why you can't try it. I am sure it was thickened with cornstarch and very hot spices, plus garlic. You had to eat it with rice it was so hot. It was yummy! Hez -
ARCHIVED Farmer John Ham
hez replied to neil's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Is there a number you could call? With the new labeling law in place they would have to list wheat from soy sauce. However, soy sauce is not even an ingredient. If it were me (and it is not, so take it with a grain of salt), throw it in the fridge and call the company on Monday. I always like to play it safe. Hez -
ARCHIVED Think Ds Got Glutened...first Time...anything I Can Give Him?
hez replied to wolfie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wish I knew of a mircle cure after being glutened. I try and get lots of rest, drink water and eat bland comfort foods. Sorry, Hez -
ARCHIVED Corn Tortillas Dusted W/ Wheat Flour?
hez replied to luvs2eat's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Alton Brown on the Food Network recently made homemade corn tortias. Very interesting show. I do not have the time to make chips or tortias. I just buy the Mission brand, they are marked gluten-free and produced on corn lines only (I don't even think they use flour in the factory, but I am not sure). Hez -
ARCHIVED Amy's Spinach gluten-free Pizza
hez replied to mamaw's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have been wanting to try it but have not seen it in the stores yet. Where did you find them? Hez -
ARCHIVED Less Than 0.02% Gluten In Minute Made Frozen Lemonade
hez replied to Tori's Dad's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Our family drinks the pink lemonade, lemonade and limeade without issue. I think this is one of those cases where the lawyers have them scared (probably rightly so with all the lawsuits out there). Hez -
I am so sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose a beloved friend and pet. I hope you have a great time backpacking. Unfortunately, I have nothing to add to Tiffany's great list. Hez

ARCHIVED Are Most Marshmellows Gluten-free?
hez replied to Esther Sparhawk's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Kraft (will clearly label gluten) marshmellows and Health Valley Rice Bran crackers (it states the ingredients are gluten-free on the package). The Rice Bran cracker is harder and smaller than a traditional graham cracker. But for smores I like them. They also make a great crust. Hez -
ARCHIVED Questions About Bacon, And Need A Recipe Or Two
hez replied to Will Roper's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use Oscar Meyer bacon and Jennio Turkey sausage. Sorry, I have not tried making pot stickers. Hez -
ARCHIVED Enzymes Help Celiacs Digest Small Amounts Of Gluten
hez replied to prinsessa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A friend of mine has children who are allergic (not celiac) to wheat and dairy. When they are at potlucks or out to dinner the kids take some kind of enzyme that she says helps with cc. However, they have a different response because they are allergic. I am not sure if it would help if you had celiac. I really am not sure about these health food store...
