ARCHIVED Antibiotics?
cyclinglady replied to jsdawson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Believe me, I know all too well what antibiotics can do to a gut. But the reality is that my infection is bad and I need to be on them until my tooth is extracted. The infection already spread to my sinus's and face. This has improved. Once the tooth is pulled, I should be fine. In the meantime, I am eating copious amounts of yogurt and sauerkraut... -
ARCHIVED Our son is newly diagnosed with celiac and his severe stomach pain
cyclinglady replied to Salina's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just wanted to add that all first-degree relatives should be tested for CD even if symptom free. I am sorry that your son is so sick. On a GF diet he should improve. It just takes time. Luckily, kids tend to heal much faster! ? -
ARCHIVED Antibiotics?
cyclinglady replied to jsdawson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Welcome! Were you able to verify that the medications you took were gluten free? There is a list maintained by a pharmacist who advocated for celiacs. It is pretty accurate. Most often a name brand (not generic) is recommended. Still, it is best to confirm with the actual pharmaceutical company and read the ingredient label. Open Original... -
Any tips for Costco?
cyclinglady replied to pdm1981's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The Costco rotisserie chicken is our "to go" food. Yummy and safe. At our Costco, the chicken guy only handles chicken all day long! The prep area is away from other food prep areas. We buy mostly Whole Foods (fruit, veggies, meat, fish, eggs, dairy, cheese, rice, etc.) but I buy chips and snacks that are certified gluten free and some that are... -
Welcome! I encourage you to read postings in our DH section. I do not have DH, but from all the posts I have seen over the years, DH can take longer to resolve. DH seems to have a mind of its own. You must be extremely strict on the GF diet. More so than celiacs with intestinal symptoms. Best to stick to Whole Foods and avoid going out to restaurants...

We use "Find me GF", but......we carefully review the comments. We only trust reviews that mention celiac disease. Otherwise, the comment could be just a GF dieter who is trying to lose weight and does not consider cross contamination. Even then, we talk to both the manager and the head chef. We do not place much faith in wait staff (no offense, I was...

I am sorry that your husband has DH. I do not have DH, but I understand that it is awful! What I do know is that the antibodies located in the skin take much longer to decrease than a celiac who does not have DH and that even the tiniest gluten exposure can bring on the itchy, burning and unrelenting rash. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for flare...

ARCHIVED My son's tests results - confused!
cyclinglady replied to Heather G's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
With the control test (in this case the IgA deficiency test), you do not know if the TTG IgA or the DGP IgA results are even valid. It is a necessary part of the celiac testing process. You could also request the EMA IgA test as well. Different labs have different ranges, so I would dismiss the Mayo lab ranges. -
ARCHIVED My son's tests results - confused!
cyclinglady replied to Heather G's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome. I can see the hesitation since just the DGP Igg is positive. It is not a common result. Was he tested for an IgA deficiency? That test, when in conjunction with the celiac tests, is used as a control test (to see if any IgA tests are working properly). If the IgA deficiency were negative it could explain the low results on the other tests... -
I do not think that kind of pain is related to celiac disease, but I could be wrong. In any case, it would be better to see your GP and maybe get a referral to an orthopedist. I injured my heel a while ago. My neighbor, an ER doctor who specializes in Ortho, pretty much laughed at me. He said that I would not be able to stand the pain if it were truly...

ARCHIVED Small bowel study???
cyclinglady replied to Cathyp's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What were the results of your endoscopy? I assume he took biopsies? Did he see any other damage or test for things like SIBO or H. pylori? Do you have symptoms of food not moving through your system? If you were diagnosed with celiac disease (your antibodies DGP, EMA And TTG were all high), things might not be moving alone based on villi damage... -
ARCHIVED PillCam?
cyclinglady replied to Poodle<3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A pill camera could catch Celiac Disease. Open Original Shared Link If celiac disease has been ruled out at this time, you can trial the diet to see if symptoms improve (Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance). A pill camera can catch other diseases of the small intestine, like Crohn's Disease, so it might be worth pursuing. I was sure my niece... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance , Possible Autoimmunity & Pain
cyclinglady replied to MarieH33's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Although, it is possible to access the small intestine via a colonoscopy, it is not common. I agree that a current celiac blood test and possibly an endoscopy is in order. You can develop celiac disease at any time in your life. Perhaps, it was just beginning all those years ago. Maybe there was no damage in the spot your old GI biopsies. If everything... -
Calli, I ride a lot. I would recommend starting out slow. Ride around your neighborhood every other day or so. The goal is to build endurance and that includes being able to sit for long periods on a bike seat! Increase your distance by 10% a weekend base it on how you feel. Cycling is fun!
-
I hope you recover quickly! It is so frustrating when you can even determine the cause!

So what kind of doctor told you to go gluten free based on just the celiac blood panel? Which one insisted on the biopsy (I am guessing your GI). The most accepted diagnostic criteria for celiac disease is the celiac blood panel and biopsies (obtained by endoscopy). Here is an algorithm by the Mayo Clinic that still shows that biopsy is still preferred...

ARCHIVED Understanding test results
cyclinglady replied to whitecap62's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Looks like you tested positive. That typically means getting a GI referral for biopsies via endoscopy. Keep eating gluten until all testing is done. I would not worry about the super high result. Open Original Shared Link Welcome to the forum! -

ARCHIVED Numbness & Tingling
cyclinglady replied to CristinaH's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes....years, but your mileage may vary. Neurological issues are usually the last to resolve. This is why a diagnosis is handy as it can be difficult to remain gluten free without one (but not impossible). It can be done though (my hubby has been gluten-free for 15 years without a dx). Gluten and neurological issues are still relatively unstudied... -

ARCHIVED Numbness & Tingling
cyclinglady replied to CristinaH's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi! I would strongly urge you to get back on a gluten diet and get tested. It is great that you suspect an issue with gluten (and you are probably right), but later, you might doubt yourself. Because you have Hashi's, I would recommend a full celiac screening, because I test negative (I have Hashi's too) to the standard screening TTG IgA and IgG... -
