  1. Yes, my husband has not been formally tested and has been gluten free for 12 years. He went off gluten at the recommendation of both his GP and my allergist. He struggled with the diet for the first year, but he has been faithful ever since. Of course, there have been accidental glutenings. I was just diagnosed in March of this year. I had no symptoms...
  2. You'll just have to wait for the results of your celiac disease blood panel, but until then, continue to eat gluten in case your doctors want to do a biopsy of your intestinal tract. And yes, Europeans (and their descendants) in general, seem to have a higher incidence of celiac disease. If it's not celiac disease, you could have developed food intolerances...
  3. My baby niece's nose and little face turned orange because her Mommy fed her way too many carrots and sweet potatoes! It went away when she stopped eating them so much! Are the whites of your eyes okay? Or are they yellowish? Could be jaundice like the others have suggested.
  4. I've tried them all. I do a lot of baking from scratch, but these mixes are pretty darn good and so convenient while on the road! I typically add things to them like coffee to the brownie mix or apples/carrots, cinnamon, and raisins to the white mix. I always make cupcakes and freeze them. Good for portion control and I always have goodies on hand. Skip...
  5. Have you had tea or coffee for the past few months? Did you had a reaction then? I'd put money on the cheese and jalapeno peppers. Reactions can be immediate (seconds) or take up to 48 hours. As far as the wine is concerned, the tannin and sulfates have not triggered IBS symptoms for me but cause a Rosacea flare up (I'm vain, so I won't drink it)....
  6. Your diet is certainly healthy provided you are not allergic or intolerant to any of the foods you subscribed. Some celiac disease patients often have to give up dairy products until there is sufficient healing of the villi. I'm assuming you feel good eating all these foods!
  7. People who gain weight after going gluten free are typically reaching for gluten free junk food. You have to admit, it's pretty depressing to give up gluten.
  8. My doctor prescribed 1500 mg of calcium. I use the Costco brand (Calicum Citrate) that contains vitamin D, Magnesium and few other minerals. Ugh! It's six pills a day!
  9. That's fine, if you're going to take supplements, avoid gluten, and do weight bearing exercises. That's exactly what my Gastro prescribed upon my diagnosis. But what if you need to modify your activities to prevent fractures? Like giving up gluten, it's easier to stick to it if you have been diagnosed with celiac disease or an intolerance. If I'm going...
  10. I'm so sorry to hear about your foot. I fractured a vertebrae 10 weeks ago doing NOTHING! My bone scan show osteopenia, but they didn't scan the thoracic area of my back, just the lumbar (lower). I'm pretty sure that area has osteoporosis. Anyway, I'm taking more calcium and hopefully I'll be able to build up. I was a runner. Ran my last 1/2 marathon...
  11. Wow! Glad you're feeling better.
  12. Consumer Reports last year reported high levels of arsenic in rice. I didn't think that much about it. At the time, only my husband was gluten free. I baked a few goodies for him and he ate Rice Chex occasionally and I made rice just once or twice a week for dinner. Now that I'm gluten free too, I'm baking a lot more (using rice flour), eating brown rice...
  13. Do get re-tested! Your ability to absorb your meds will more than likely change as you continue on the gluten-free diet and heal. I'm assuming that getting the "shakes" means that you are running hyper (I always feel muscle weakness and eye muscle pain). My mother has Graves Disease (hyper) and has permanent eye damage. I think that running hyper at times...
  14. Glad you are feeling better!
  15. Towel dry your hair, reach for the stack of gowns located on your bedside table and change into a fresh gown. Shove hubby over (he won't wake up) and grab a clean beach towel from stack located on the same bedside table, and toss the drenched one onto the floor (temporarily) and smooth out a clean one. Arrange your body on top of the towel and pray for...
  16. I've only been on Armour, but at one time, I was cutting the dosage in half and taking it twice a day. It was supposed to supply a steadier stream of meds into my system. Unfortunately, I wasn't compliant! I have tried taking it at night and it works fine for me as well. Others complain that it "wires" them, but I was able to sleep well. I did it...
  17. I've been waiting for months for my soy yogurt and have been watching their website. Trader Joe's shelves have been empty, so I'm pretty sure they supply them under the TJ label. The good news is that I have found "Silk" yogurt and it's just as good. Wholesoy is going to have a tough time regaining market share. If they continue work with Trader Joe ...
  18. I liked your comment about the potholders. I've always washed mine weekly or tossed them into the laundry if I got food on them. Not everyone does this.
  19. Excellent comments! I take Armour thyroid (20 years) and dissolve it under my tongue. I'm not sure how much is absorbed but it helps breakdown the tablet much faster and I can have my morning coffee sooner. As far as TSH is concerned everyone is different. I need to be under a 3, but not lower than 1 despite the lab ranges. My doctor is new (old one retired...
  20. I'd push for the Celiac Testing (keep eating gluten). Everyone here has given you sound advice. The year and a half prior to my diagnosis (March 2013) my thyroid was swinging back and forth. I was really concerned about the hyper stages since my Mom had Graves and now has permanent eye damage. Doctor's were puzzled. They thought it was perimenopause...
  21. You can ask your doctor. They are expensive and have to be replaced every year. We have them around for bee stings since my brother almost died from the reaction. I'm allergic to milk, nuts, latex and NSAIDS but don't carry an epi pen. I just make sure I don't eat it (or touch in the case of latex). It's different for children since they might eat it...
  22. Did a little searching in the forum about joint pain. I found that it could be another autoimmune disorder like lupus or RA -- maybe even Lyme Disease. Hope this helps.
  23. You might be getting glutened (especially from restaurants) or you might have intolerances that were masked by eating gluten (seems like you already found that you can't have milk). If I ate eggs (intolerance), almond milk (allergic to nuts), I'd be toast! Try keeping a food journal. It may help you identify your intolerances. Good luck!
  24. Are you sure you aren't getting glutened? Intolerances? I hope you figure it out and feel better soon.
  25. Here are some good tips: Open Original Shared Link This second link also contains other links about a gluten free kitchen or sharing one with gluten eaters. Open Original Shared Link I would strongly recommend putting your cast iron in the clean cycle of your oven and then re-seasoning them. I bought a bunch of new Gladware or ZipLock containers...
