  1. I buy only the original Smarties made in the USA and Canada. I pass them out on Halloween (we get over 500 kids at our door). However, I don't eat them throughout the year. Too much sugar and lots of dyes. Let's face it. I'd rather eat good chocolate! Maybe you've just picked up a bug?
  2. How about some veggies (carrots, celery, endaname, snow peas, etc.)? Kids will gobble them up! Popcorn (Pirate's Booty) is cheap to make (homemade) and whole grain. It's always a hit at my house. Have fun!
  3. Hang in there! Give the GF diet some time. Eventually, you'll get used to it. My husband has been GF for over 12 years and I've been the one reading the labels and preparing the food. Despite that "edge", I felt overwhelmed when I was diagnosed in March. Not everyone is underweight here. My only CD symptoms were anemia and thyroiditis.
  4. Nice to have a starting point, but you'll probably need to avoid the complete food group for a while. For example, tomatoes are part of the nightshade family and include egg plant and white potatoes (not sweet). Do the research. If you tested low, you might be able to eat those foods on a rotational diet. You may eventually regain all or part of those...
  5. I use Trader Joe's gluten-free pastas. The rice noodles don't contain a thickening agent. That's just the rice starch breaking down (it does not cook the same as wheat pasta). To make a simple roux, I use cornstarch that's cheap and readily available (provided you don't have a corn intolerance). I'd recommend that you stick to whole foods and...
  6. The church in the past has taken a pretty firm position about gluten-free wafers insisting that they must contain wheat! Fortunately, they have finally approved two suppliers (nuns) who bake these. I think you have to ask your priest and show proof of Celiac Disease and they should be able to accommodate you. Any inflammation is bound to be bad. I...
  7. My daughter requested a donut this morning (she's NOT gluten free). So, it's almost the end of summer and she hasn't had a real donut for sometime. Went to Dunkin Donuts, but alas they did not have a gluten-free version yet. I can recommend Kinnikinnick's gluten-free frozen donuts. Just thaw on the counter and microwave for 10 seconds to warm it up...
  8. We have been going to El Pollo Loco since it opened over 20 years ago! Yes, there are gluten-free options. I haven't had any cross contamination issues, but it is possible -- just like any restaurant. Since my dx, I've just ordered the chicken and have brought it home and made my own sides. I guess I'm not as comfortable at my local store. In the past...
  9. I saw Tyson gluten-free Chicken Tenders at Publix this week. Very nice indeed!
  10. My daughter (who does not have celiac disease to my knowledge) weighed only 17 pounds at one year. She didn't hit 20 pounds until her 2nd birthday. She was always in the 5% bracket on the weight chart until she was about 7 years old. Now, a teen, she's at 25%. Based on family history, she's right on target. She came from a family of little people...
  11. Too late...the AMA has decided that obesity is a disease! Can you believe it?
  12. Diagnosed in March. I broke a vertebrae just laying down four weeks ago (or maybe it was trying to get off the floor....we'll never know! After the initial pain, I have a burning sensation and numbness. Most pain occurred when I was trying to move in bed. I'm scheduled for a bone density test in two weeks. Meanwhile my back is healing. Taking calcium...
  13. My daughter's co-op preschool (parents worked as aides), required the children to wash their hands before and after eating their snacks. Unfortunately, her elementary school never gave them time to wash their hands prior to eating lunch. Germy gel did the trick, but she doesn't have celiac disease. I'd request that your children have the opportunity to...
  14. All good suggestions and ideas about your daughter's health problems! I'm famous for passing out and it started as a young child. Looking back, I can attribute it to our family curse of non-functioning gallbladders. Most suffered on and off for years. Doctors were always perplexed. Mine was only removed when it became infected and finally stopped...
  15. Ugh! No signs of improvement on my grey hair which is really grey for my age! But I don't color it. My signs of improvement (which could also be contributed to my increase in thyroid meds) for the anemia are reduced fatigue, bright red (instead of pale pink) inside my eyelids and a desire to run or ride my bike! Really low hemoglobin causes me to get...
  16. Like Addy, I love my cast iron pans. After my diagnosis, I read on about.com that you just have to clean them during the cleaning cycle in your oven. The temperature is so high that it burns off all gluten. Then I re-seasoned them. Remember, they must be washed by hand and never use soap on them -- just hot water and a quick rinse and towel dry. I...
  17. Congratulations! I'm hoping that my ferritin levels are increasing too!
  18. It took about 6 to 7 weeks before my abdominal symptoms improved (those just developed between my blood panel and my biopsy). Prior to that I my only symptoms were Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and anemia. The anemia is improving with iron supplements and I'm taking calcium (broke a back vertebrae four weeks ago). Getting a bone scan in a few weeks. Give...
  19. Did you take probiotics after the antibiotics? That might help. Consuming anything with good bacteria is helpful too.
  20. Congrats! It is great to be feeling better!
  21. I'd have to disagree about the electronic records. I was just hospitalized and even though my doctors are affiliated with the hospital and are right across the street, the hospital did not have access to my medical records. I've also been hospitalized outside of my state and they didn't have access to my records. Plus, when I did tell them my allergies...
  22. I second this! Ask your doctor about a Celiac Blood Test panel. So far, I'm the only official person diagnosed with celiac disease who has autoimmune thyroiditis in my family. My mom tested negative (Graves) and my brother (Hashi's) is scheduled to be tested in August. Finally, you can develop food allergies/intolerances at any time.
  23. I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. For 15 years I was hypo and was easily treated with Armour Thyroid. But, last year, I went from being hypo to hyper. I had swings going back and forth. It was awful. I believe that the end of perimenopause may have triggered the swings as well as developing celiac disease but that's just a guess. My hyper symptoms were...
  24. Check out roadid.com. I'm not trying to promote this company, but there are lots of nice bracelets, shoe tags, etc. for athletes. Who wants to run with your wallet or even your cell? Plus, I had a friend who crashed on his bike. We were able to contact his wife ASAP while calling 911. Moms in my MOMS Club wear their Road ID while at the park with the...
  25. I don't have a medical bracelet, but I run/cycle wearing a Road ID. There's room for a medical statement besides the typical phone numbers. I'd get the bracelet to support your son!
