  1. My iron levels were okay, but my Ferritin levels (iron stores) were low. Did they test your Ferritin levels? That would show malabsorption and help support a Celiac diagnosis. Don't forget you are a runner and could have "heel strike anemia" as well. Finally, the ulcers you described could be bleeding and contributing to your anemia. Low hemoglobin...
  2. I'm going to sound like a broken record, but "rotation, rotation, rotation!" If you have food allergies/intolerance or you even suspect them, you need to 1) calm down the inflammation and 2) prevent new allergies from developing. Start a four day rotational diet (surf the web for more detailed information). Avoid all the foods you KNOW or have tested to...
  3. Rotation, rotation, rotation! If you suspect allergies (or already know of some), you'll need to rotate your foods to 1) calm down the "fire" inflammation and 2) prevent other allergies from developing. There are plenty of websites that discuss four day or seven day rotational food diets. Good luck!
  4. Rotation, rotation, rotation! All good advice from everyone who responded to your question. I'd add that in order 1) calm down your body (inflammation) and 2) prevent you from developing allergies to other foods, you'll need to rotate your foods. There are plenty of four day rotational diet sites out there that can go into detail. Good luck!
  5. I don't have any specific advice since I have not had any bone pain, but as a mom I'd recommend seeing a doctor. Take care.
  6. Besides having Hashimoto's Thryoiditis, I only had low Ferritin. I've been anemic on and off for years since I have Thalassemia (which is a genetic anemia -- tiny red blood cells that can cause low hemoglobin). The low Ferritin is what tipped off the Gastenterologist for Celiac when I went in for a routine colonoscopy. But within a few days of my...
  7. It's inspiring to hear that! I'm still a newbie just seven weeks or so into this.
  8. Don't just get a new toaster -- HIDE IT!!!! If you leave it in plain sight, someone will accidentally put wheat toast or a waffle in it. Same goes for other kitchen items like a colander, wooden spoons, etc. Take a few hours away from your school books and focus on Celiac Disease. The benefit of taking the time to learn about celiac disease will mean...
  9. Lucky for me that I live in California and have access to plenty of masa for homemade tortillas! There's nothing like homemade!
  10. Not sure how you've identified your food allergies/intolerances, but I can tell you that I'm allergic to rice. My best advice is to be sure you're on a four or ten day rotational diet. Do not eat the same foods, day-in and day-out! You can continue to develop food intolerances or allergies. You need to give your body a rest and "put out or at least calm...
  11. My husband's been gluten-free for over 12 years. No tests. Just trial and error and the advice to avoid gluten per two medical doctors. He's been happy and it was easy for us to comply since I had food allergies/intolerances. I was recently diagnosed with Celiac's and was tested because: 1) avoidance of potential health issues for my daughter and rest...
  12. If it's only been a few weeks, your body is still trying to heal, however, it could be a dairy intolerance (and it may only be temporary). But when you mentioned getting nauseous when eating rich or fatty foods that sounds like gallbladder issues (non-functioning). Has this been ruled out?
  13. Too new to answer your question about wheat grass, but my doc recommends dividing the multi-vitamin in two and taking a 1/2 in the morning and another at night for better absorption.
  14. I'm a newbie here, but here's my two cents. Perhaps, it will help you! I have had Hashimoto's thyroiditis and mild anemia on and off for years. During a routine colonoscopy, my gastro wanted to test me for Celiac Disease. My blood test showed "mildly abnormal celiac result". My husband has been gluten-free for 12 years, so I baked cookies for myself...
  15. Thanks for the article. Millet makes an excellent hot porridge
  16. I only got annual gallbladder attacks (I always passed out). Each ultrasound show a healthy gallbladder without stones. In retrospect, I think the annual attacks were times that my gallbadder wouldn't empty, would cause severe pain (usually lower abdomen) and then it would start working again. No visit to the ER ever caught it even though I had a strong...
  17. My GB was functioning at zero percent!!!!! Had my GB removed in Las Vegas while on a business trip. It actually started to rot! Yuck. Felt great after it was removed after having issues for 30 years (pain so severe at times I would pass out!) Developed celiac disease just recently (or at least it was diagnosed with only anemia and thyroid symptoms)...
  18. Contact your Stepdad's Human Resource Department for assistance. Being terminated (involuntary or voluntary) doesn't necessarily stop a person's health insurance for up to 30 days. Then if the company is large enough, they are required by law to offer COBRA. Your Stepdad will need to fill out all the COBRA paperwork with a specified time period and HR...
  19. I got tested only because I was going for routine colonoscopy and I already had thyroiditis and anemia. I wanted a definitive diagnosis in order to help my family as I suspect several members have it. Plus, I'd receive better support from them. It's hard to deny a pathology report! My husband has been gluten-free for 12 years (yes, my family has...
  20. I went to my doc to have my thyroid re-checked and I suggested the colonoscopy since I'm 51. The gastro prior to the procedure recommended an endoscopy since I was anemic and had thyroiditis. Blood test was positive and endoscopy showed moderate to severe damage. My colonoscopy was normal. Lucky for me, my gastro was Celiac savy (he must have just went...
  21. I've been taking Armour Thyroid for almost 20 years. It's been around for over100 years until synthetics came on the market. Mary Shoman on thryoid.about.com has an excellent site that can assist you. Just type in "armour" and in the site's search bar and you can read up on all the benefits of this hormone replacement that's been around for over 100 years...
  22. I purchase most of my meat and fish at Costco. They even have a few luncheon meats (like turkey and Canadian bacon) which are uncured and labeled gluten-free. Break them up into smaller packages and freeze as they won't last but a few days after opening. Sprouts has some sausage and bacon that is uncured as well. My family really loves the gluten-free...
  23. I've had food allergies for years. When first diagnosed in '95, I was highly allergic to almonds, cow's milk, garlic, mushrooms and eggs (both immediate and delayed reactions). The first thing I did was to eliminate those foods that I tested high and then I took all the foods that I could eat (even the ones that I had mild reactions to like rice) and divided...
