  1. When I was hyperthyroid I was wired all the time and had a hair-trigger temper. My anxiety levels were astronomical. It was like running on adrenoline constantly. Well, anyway, hope you have the thyroid thing beat!
  2. I've heard "Whole Foods" called "Whole Paycheck". I bet you'll find they're more expensive. But their stuff is very good.
  3. Well... I don't have a huge reaction either. But over the course of a life time I have acquired 2 autoimmune diseases (one of which is VERY painful and might cut my life short) which is probably due to the exposure to gluten over many years. So, what helps me is: - Completely strict adherence. It IS addictive but the longings and cravings will...
  4. Here's an article about Intermittent Fasting that some of you might find interesting: Open Original Shared Link There's a group of us on another message forum experimenting with it. Many of the diabetics have reported much, much better glucose control and quite a few of us also feel "sharper" on our fasting days.
  5. Floaters can be associated with some autoimmune diseases. I think there's a treatment if they're severe enough.
  6. Wow! That's' terrific. I wish I had known about the gluten/thyroid thing almost 20 years ago. Dr. Fine says that 30% of thyroiditis sufferers can go into remission on a gluten-free diet. But I went and had RAI done. But I am so happy for you!
  7. Oh yeah. In fact, I passed mucuous with gas too. What a mess.
  8. Are your parents supportive of the dietary change? If so, I'd skip the doctor business, especially since you really need to eat a LOT of gluten for 8 weeks or more. I mean, a piece of bread at every meal. And even then, you might have another negative biopsy but you're still gluten sensitive. There's a lot of doctors who will take positive blood work...

ARCHIVED Should I Tell My Old Doctors?

I've always been frustrated because MD's never hear about their mistakes, their patients just leave and they go on very blythely ignorant of their failings. Yes! You should write!
  10. You should listen to your body. Your doctor doesn't have the opportunity to walk around in your body and experience the pain you have and the lack of pain when you change your diet. Ultimately this comes down to who has control over your body. You, or your doctor?
  11. Actually, it might be very healthy. I've been reading about Intermittent Fasting and it sounds like there might be a lot of positive health effects from eating like this. I do a variation of it myself, where every other day I fast 24 hours (skip breakfast and lunch).
  12. I use ghee instead of butter which is just the fat part of real butter, without the casein. It doesn't taste like butter but it has a wonderful nutty flavor.
  13. I think the easiest way to cook, until you get past the accidental glutenenings and subsequent brain-foggings, is to simplyfy everything! You will KNOW you can't get glutened if you stick to whole foods and spices. Shop the outsides of the store, pick up the veggies, fruits, meats, eggs, leave the interior of the store alone. Anything with an ingredient...
  14. I actually look to SE Asia for inspiration on cooking without wheat or dairy. Good thing I love Thai food! There's a great web site that might help you out: importfood.com Lots of great Thai recipes and ingredients.
  15. My main contributers to brain fog were: gluten, dairy products, too many carbohydrates, low thyroid. Now that I stick to a pretty good diet without grains and dairy and have my thyroid levels adjusted, I'm doing fine.
  16. I have the meat grinder. I've been very disappointed with kitchen aid attachments. The plastic on them cracks! The actual kitchen aid appliance is such a work horse, too bad the attachments are so cheaply made. :\
  17. How about chicken? Its a staple for me. I get these grilled, frozen chicken strips at Trader Joe's and heat them and put them on top of a big, lucious salad. I also get frozen chicken breasts and make chicken based curries. And occassionally I get a whole chicken and broil it with wonderful spices and rubs. *drool* I'd better get some lunch, I'm going...
  18. Open Original Shared Link This seems to show that loading up on starches and sugars leads to weight gain in the belly, which is connected to diabetes, heart disease and other metabolic disorders. Whereas eating carbs from vegetables and lots of animal derived protein, leads to a better waist/hip ratio. Snippet from the article:
  19. I know it is hard at first to get off casein. But it does get easier! You'll stop missing/mourning those foods and move onto new one. Hang in there!
  20. Hops and Licorice don't contain gluten. However, that doesn't mean that the shampoo doesn't also contain gluten. Does that answer your question?
  21. You could also make your own gluten-free mixes. I believe there are quite a few "recipes" online. Then you could buy the individual ingredients in bulk and stir them together yourself.
  22. Hops is a vine, they use the flower for making beer (and they use hops in some sleep supplements too). It's a very pretty vine, I might grow some!
  23. Thyroid issues can cause all those symptoms: Hair, weight gain. You might want to look up thyroid symptoms and see if you match up. It'd be "hypothyroid" that you're looking for.
  24. That's hilarious.
  25. Too much fruit will slow you down. You can add it back in after you lose the weight. Also avoid the starchy stuff too (bananas, potatos, yams, parsnips). Here's a message forum devoted to Paleo dieting, they might be able to give you some help: Open Original Shared Link Oh yes, I also wanted to add, some people don't lose weight quickly or...
