Diagnosis in children
cristiana replied to nattaliec's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Nattalie If you are from the UK, it is worth bearing in mind that there are significant advantages in obtaining an official diagnosis of coeliac disease. Some people will just go gluten free without finding out for sure one way or another - I know two people who have done just that - but if it does turn out your child is coeliac, the NHS offers the... -
Helpful and positive - thanks for posting. I know in the past when I have had aches and pains they always seemed to get worse when I've been stressed.

I had something that sounds just like that and it turned out to be a type of eczema, strange because I hadn't had it as a child. It started in my early 50s. I went to the doctor and he prescribed a topical steroid, Betnovate, and an emollient gel with an added anti-inflammatory agent known as Adex. He advised me to apply the Adex 20 minutes before... -
Malignant Cancers are a Hidden Danger for Celiacs

No problem - I am sure all the processed stuff can't be doing much good on all sorts of levels. My mother in law has always cooked from scratch and enjoys fantastic health in her 80s, I'm sure that's why.- 29 comments

Hello again, @Azazello! "I guess I am also curious, given my TTG level of 49. How long do you figure being gluten free will take until I'm back to normal levels and start feeling more normal again? How long did it take you after going gluten free to start feeling normal again?" Good question. I've read this forum ever since I was first diagnosed...

Malignant Cancers are a Hidden Danger for Celiacs
cristiana commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Cancer, Lymphoma and Celiac Disease
I sympathise with this, coming from England where afternoon tea has been a big part of our family's traditions! I have managed to reduce my sugar consumption from time to time but I find it hard to give up totally, partly because I have a sweet tooth (nature or nurture, who knows?!) but also as a coeliac often the only food available at a cafe or restaurant...- 29 comments

Yes, I still do think it is early days. I am sorry but I can't post anymore just now as my husband needs to use this computer this evening. But I hope that others can help you - I'll try to post again tomorrow. For the time being, do read this - lots of helpful tips to make sure no gluten sneaks into your new diet.

Hello Azazello Welcome to the forum. I haven't had the same joint issues that you describe, although I have had issues with other joints: my sacroiliac joints and ribs, and I'd say the pain got worse initially before it got better, like there was a sort of time lag after going gluten free. However, from memory, I think when my TTG test results...

Voice problems/ tremors
cristiana replied to ellen101's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This is brilliant to read. @Dandk , what you say reminded me that around the time of my diagnosis I remember thinking my voice didn't sound quite right to me. I'd completely forgotten. Thinking back, around that time I started some pretty major B complex supplementation and that must have helped because it went away. I wish you continued improvement... -

@placey0918 That's really interesting. I'd love to have detailed tests for minerals and vitamins - unfortunately that sort of testing isn't routinely done here in the UK, not even under my private consultant which is a shame because I am sure many of my issues were to do with deficiencies. What you say about zinc is so interesting because I now...- 29 comments

Suspected stomach ulcer
cristiana replied to KL443's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
@I.M.Celiac Reading what you write, it reminds me I ought to be much more grateful for the care we receive through the NHS. Struggling to cope with the increasing health issues of a growing and an ageing population and chronic underfunding spanning decades, and we have had several NHS strikes recently, it is all too easy to focus on what it doesn't deliver... -
Getting tested
cristiana replied to Toni Morrissey's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My nephew has type 1 diabetes and is tested for Coeliac routinely, I think every three years. I was surprised when I heard this was routine testing was required as like you I thought once tested negative, always negative, but seemingly not. Apparently up to 1 in 10 type 1 diabetics are coeliacs. https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy... -

My consultant diagnosed someone in their 90s a few years ago! -
Very interesting. I noticed when in Italy a few years ago how much better the Italians were at stating a product was gluten free in a prominent place on the labelling than we were here. It made shopping so much easier. They did seem very coeliac aware. Is it true that all school children of six years old are screened for coeliac disease in Italy...

Malignant Cancers are a Hidden Danger for Celiacs
cristiana commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Cancer, Lymphoma and Celiac Disease
The following blood tests (see list) are what are recommended in the UK, and should be available on the NHS after a coeliac diagnosis, but my experience was I was given these blood tests initially a bit more frequently (every six to nine months) following my diagnosis because I had anemia and odd liver function results at first. My consultant (I think...- 29 comments

Suspected stomach ulcer
cristiana replied to KL443's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, if anyone in the UK is reading this, if you are diagnosed with coeliac disease as a rule you will be entitled, under the NHS with the following: a dietician an annual review, including blood tests, with a gastroenterologist who checks you are coping with the diet OK and for any health complications DEXA bone scans, to check you are... -
Suspected stomach ulcer
cristiana replied to KL443's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi K Welcome to the forum, but I am so sorry you are going through this. It sounds a good thing you are going to have an endoscopy. However, a question: has your GP ordered any specific blood tests for Coeliac disease yet? If you have them, is there any chance you could share the results here with the lab ranges too, so we can take a... -
Hi Chantal My neuropathy was predominantly tingling although I had some burning pain too at times. I've also had buzzing sensations, raindrop sensations (except it wasn't raining) and some numbness on waking in my arms, which was put down to ulnar compression but seemed to recover with the rest of me. Twitches too - eyes, face, calf muscles I...

What a tragic story. I had a friend in hospital who couldn't get gluten-free food, we had to take it to her. I wonder how many people in nursing homes are also not receiving the right food, with no-one to speak up for them.

@TanyaL1408 Just a thought - you may find some relief if you drink peppermint tea. If there is any trapped gas which is contributing to the pressure you are feeling in that area, this might help disperse it. I've had rib and back pain when I had to take iron supplements and this caused gas to build up - I felt like I wanted to burp, but couldn...

Hi Tanya You could be me ... that sounds very familiar! It definitely wrapped round to my back. Pressure and burning too. From memory, when I had it at its worse was, oddly enough, not when I was undiagnosed but a few years in. Gluten was sneaking into my diet through an iron supplement, and I believe I was getting low levels of gluten from...

Hi Tanya It is good you are being checked out for celiac disease. I have had a lot of pain under the lower left rib in the past. At times the burning was overwhelming. I posted a lot on this forum about this because it worried me so much. I had an u/s once and I was told where the burning was under my sternum, slightly to the left, was my...

Constant low back, abdominal and pelvic pain!
cristiana replied to Aussienae's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Worth the peace of mind to have that check, but chances are all will be well. Incidentally, I've had pain on and off since my first child was born 18 years ago so I definitely think it is a factor. Mine comes and goes - at time it is so bad I just have to rest, other times it's scarcely there at all. Do follow through with your doctor, but also...- 65 replies
