  1. Hello I am living in the UK and we are about to celebrate "St Andrew's Day" the Scottish way with a gluten free haggis. Having at first not been able to go near an oat since diagnosis I have noticed in recent months the odd oat biscuit seems to be OK although this week I am noticing I have discomfort in my stomach, and a sort of general soreness in my...
  2. Hi Peg My sympathies - I have had dreadful anxiety that was bad just before diagnosis, then as my iron and B12 levels normalised it was much better. Personally, I am very grateful I found the book by Paul David and would recommend it to anyone with anxiety. You may want to read his blog first just to see the approach he takes but as far as I can make...
  3. Brilliant news nikkijayne. Your doctor sounds fab. All I can say is make the most of eating all those things you think you will miss once you go gluten-free. In the run up to my endoscopy I had Weetabix for breakfast, McVities Penguins, the works.... and interestingly with all that, the most incredible headaches! A tense pain in the centre of the forehead...
  4. nikkijayne and oukethelousa Hello both. I have just found a really helpful resource that might interest you. I have also posted it under a separate topic, "Think Coeliac" in the International Room. It seems that 36% of celiac disease patients are currently incorrectly diagosed with IBS. It also lists all the tests advised under the National Institute...
  5. My sister recently made me aware of the "Think Coeliac" resource that was posted to my brother-in-law's inbox (he is a GP) and I thought it might be of use to any British visitors to this site who are looking into how to get tested, symptoms, statistics pertinent the UK, etc, etc. Hope it helps. Open Original Shared Link PS It reveals that...
  6. Sorry - I have just re-read your post and missed that before your problems have been dismissed as IBS. That is more difficult. However, it may just be worth demanding one (in as nice a way as possible!). I just feel that the climate here is changing a bit, perhaps even since you last went in about your IBS, and doctors are being encouraged to "think...
  7. Hi nikkijayne Welcome to the forum and to the two different spellings of celiac/coeliac. I will go with the British version today! My symptoms were not all gastric. Looking back there were various weird neurological things happening and my 'nervous stomach' which only played up now and again I thought was perhaps just a touch of IBS. Eventually...
  8. Don't worry about that sort of TMI on this site ! I am no doctor but in my own case the fissure healed very quickly. Literally loads of bright red blood in the toilet bowl one week, none the next, once I realised that the iron was really excacerbating this D and had greatly lowered the dosage. Whether a fissure would cause a scar visible by a camera...
  9. Hi ceceliac I am so sorry you are having this trouble. Forgive me as I am a bit pressed for time so have not been able to read all your previous posts just now - but I am so glad you are going to see a gastroenterologist again. However, I wondered, can you just see your normal doctor to find out if perhaps this bleeding is something as simple as fissures...
  10. Hi Autumn Well I am back - I thought I wouldn't be able to come on line this week but I have had the chance, as it turns out! It sounds as if the doctors were checking you for colitis, that sort of thing, rather than celiac disease which would have been an endoscopy as in a camera down the throat. Still - at least you know that your lower intestines...
  11. Hi Autumn Ah - so not dairy. But whatever the reason, glad you have had some good days. About five months before my diagnosis I had the most awful diarrhea which I thought at the time was down to stress and iron supplements. It cleared up after a while, then came back again, independent of stress and iron supplements. Then I got the right blood tests...
  12. Hi Autumn Sky Just to say first that my computer is in dire need of surgery so I will go silent for a few days (unfortunately I do not have any other means of going online at the moment). I will leave the blood results to those better acquainted with their meaning but thanks for posting the references. Just to say - do you think the diarrhea has cleared...
  13. Hi Autumn Sounds like good advice above. Just wanted to say I hope your hand is feeling better and that Saturday goes well. That endoscopy may well give you some of the answers you are searching for. Take care xx
  14. PS - your local pharmacist should be able to guide you to some good gluten-free vitamins.
  15. Autumn - good for you, keep eating the gluten but the dairy is a separate issue and won't matter. Re shoulder pain, I found when I had that horrible feeling that a hot shower on the painful area or a good soak in a hot bath before bedtime helped to some extent. Hairloss isn't an easy issue to deal with as I know myself but if celiac is your problem...
  16. Hi Autumn In my own GP's surgery here in England they will print off results for you, even if you haven't seen the doctor. If I were you I would get them to do exactly that and you can post the celiac results here - the people on this website really know their stuff, as I say, it is something that I never went into but others should be able to cast some...
  17. Hi - I'm so glad cyclinglady came in. I never went into my own blood results (actually, I never even saw them) but my gastroenterologist told me one set was not convincing at all, but one other reading was through the roof. So cyclinglady is right - you do need the full panel. It is difficult in the UK to see a GP at times but try to get an appointment...
  18. Hi Autumn - welcome to the Forum. I am so sorry you are going through this. I am not an expert on reading test results so will ask someone else to chime in on what they make of your tests but could you just tell us, are you in the UK? It might help someone guide you in the right direction as regards who to turn to next in the health system.
  19. How annoying. Here in the UK a lot of manufacturers now list gluten containing ingredients and allergens in bold in the ingredients. I learned a lesson the hard way when I ate a brand of chocolate that didn't put gluten in bold so missed it completely, although they listed milk and soya in bold. Colleen is so right, every label, every time. Not easy...
  20. gluten-free Lover - you have really cheered me up! I have the paper clip feeling in the exact same place! So it is not just me! I will ask my gastro consultant when I next seem him what is there on the anatomical chart?! Thing is yesterday I had an elasticated waist on and that is where the pain was, today a skirt that doesn't put pressure in the...
  21. Hi gluten-free Lover... Thank you for a very comprehensive reply. Yes, that is how the pain feels as you describe in the first para. It also sometimes feels as if there is a paperclip there (or a staple) that is trapping something! I could almost believe it was trapped wind at times. Other times it's like a bee sting. Then it is an itch. A doctor...
  22. Thanks Colleen - I'm sorry, I need to sort out a signature. I just tried but couldn't find out how. Anyway, I have been gluten-free for a year since May 2013, I was diagnosed by biopsy and blood test a year ago - readings were through the roof. Since diagnosis I have had all sorts of weird and wonderful symptoms but this sacroiliac pain predates diagnosis...
  23. Hi everyone Has anyone had sacroiliac pain (I gather SI problems are quite common in celiacs) that has referred to the front of the body? I have inflammation in that left joint but have had pain in my left groin and also, a weird sort of itch/soreness kind of midway between my left hip and my tummy button that never troubles me at night but does seem...
  24. Joanna Rowsell is a really inspirational young British Olympian who has suffered hair loss from a young age and it is really good to read how she has dealt with it. I have always had fine hair but it got really thin around the time of my diagnosis which I think may have been to do with being anemic. I do feel for you as I know exactly how heartless and...
  25. Thank you all so much. There's so much good advice above I feel I ought to print this post out and stick it on the kitchen wall and next to the medicine cabinet. I really appreciate your taking the time to reply to this. Many of my relatives have sailed through life ignoring aches and pains and even more worrying symptoms and have got through to the...
