People can be very insensitive. However, a situation I find almost more difficult is well-meaning people preparing something for me, going to a huge amount of trouble on my behalf, only to discover that what they have cooked/bought still has gluten in it. I am getting to the stage where I just feel it is easier to always have my own treats/snacks on standby...

ARCHIVED No Digestive Symptoms...could It Still Be Celiac?
cristiana replied to artzombie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I only developed 'classic' celiac symptoms (D) about two months before my diagnosis. Before that time, I was suffering from fatigue, anemia, migraines and what I would describe as a nervous stomach (sometimes played up but not always)... but no doctor put two and two together. My own GP told me recently that a young man came in to see her with anemia ... -
ARCHIVED Lindt Lindor Chocolate And Barley Malt Ugh!
cristiana replied to daisymae106's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a feeling that the very high percentage cocoa bars might be gluten free but make sure you check the labels. But those aren't the ones I really like, the Lindor chocolate is what sets it apart from the others.... -
That's great to hear, Gemini! Thanks so much again.

Those look just right. I don't see that they sell them in the UK yet but usually good ideas catch on fast! Thanks so much. -
ARCHIVED Lindt Lindor Chocolate And Barley Malt Ugh!
cristiana replied to daisymae106's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Anyone know a chocolate manufacturer that actually does a good gluten-free impersonation of Lindt Lindor bonbons with that melty chocolate inside? I haven't found one yet. -

Me too. Lindt, are you listening? Can you use something else?! Please! -
Gemini - also wanted to thank you for being so nice about British food. Having lived abroad, including France, I know we haven't had the best reputation for restaurant food in the past. But I truly think that things have improved immensely in the last 20 years - it is still possible to have a bad meal,of course, but that is possible anywhere! Thanks again...

This is potentially very good news. The other day I went into the tiniest independently owned cafe in my home town and the cafe owner produced a file of ingredients. She had simply photocopied the label of the chocolate powder that she was using in the hot chocolate but this was so helpful. I went to Ikea in Southampton and again found a very helpful...

ARCHIVED Still Have Constant Gas While On Gluten-Free Diet
cristiana replied to egger's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Egger - funny you should say that a about a week ago I increased my consumption of cheese because there wasn't much else to eat - I don't plan well when I shop - and I got C and a bit of lower abdominal pain. -

To add to cyclinglady's questions, have you had antibiotics over the last few months, as this may have reduced the amount of good bacteria in your gut? In that case you may find taking some powerful probiotics helpful. I definitely had lactose intollerance at DX although could manage small amounts of hard cheese. A year on from DX, when I was introducing... -
ARCHIVED Is Marmite Spread Gluten Free?
cristiana replied to cristiana's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What a shame! My jar, not old, reads: Ingredients: Yeast extract, Salt, Vegetable Extract, Niacin, Thiamin, Spice Extracts (Contains Celery), Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12. Expires Feb 16. My friend says that the ingredients haven't changed in all these years so it is interesting how gluten ingredients can sneak in undetected, and for... -
ARCHIVED Is Marmite Spread Gluten Free?
cristiana posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For any British Coeliacs who like Marmite, a friend told me last night I should not be eating it. I found this on the web today. Thought I should share it as my old Marmite jar has no warnings. Open Original Shared Link -
Hi Marie I'm wondering if you might also have some nerve entrapment? I read somewhere that celiacs are prone to carpal tunnel etc. I was diagnosed with ulnar nerve entrapment earlier this year. I have had pins and needles and numbness but I admit it tends to be there mostly when I wake up and wears off. I have buzzing in my left foot and up my calf...

ARCHIVED Pure Oats - A Question For Those Who React
cristiana replied to cristiana's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hello - thanks so much, both. Yes ravenwoodglass - certified gluten-free oats. I might try to stay away from them until at least February, after my next blood test. As you say, heatman, at least they are easy to avoid than other stuff. I have been really shaken by this reaction, if indeed that is what it is - worse than the last time I had gluten by... -
ARCHIVED Pure Oats - A Question For Those Who React
cristiana posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hello All I realise that most celiacs can tolerate pure oats but I wondered for those of you that can't (apparently 10% of us?) what your symptoms are. I am trying to figure out if that is what is wrong with me at the moment. Having consciously avoided oats since my diagnosis I ate about 100g in two days last weekend and initially I had terrible abdominal... -
ARCHIVED Discomfort After Eating Oats - Is It A Problem With Avenin Or The Fibre?
cristiana replied to cristiana's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I know... me too. And flapjack - if you have that in the States? It is difficult to know whether we have this problem with avenin or whether our stomachs are still sore. -
ARCHIVED Discomfort After Eating Oats - Is It A Problem With Avenin Or The Fibre?
cristiana posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hello I am living in the UK and we are about to celebrate "St Andrew's Day" the Scottish way with a gluten free haggis. Having at first not been able to go near an oat since diagnosis I have noticed in recent months the odd oat biscuit seems to be OK although this week I am noticing I have discomfort in my stomach, and a sort of general soreness in my... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Anxiety (Related And Not)
cristiana replied to Pegleg84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Peg My sympathies - I have had dreadful anxiety that was bad just before diagnosis, then as my iron and B12 levels normalised it was much better. Personally, I am very grateful I found the book by Paul David and would recommend it to anyone with anxiety. You may want to read his blog first just to see the approach he takes but as far as I can make... -
ARCHIVED Getting Tested In The Uk
cristiana replied to nikkijayne28's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Brilliant news nikkijayne. Your doctor sounds fab. All I can say is make the most of eating all those things you think you will miss once you go gluten-free. In the run up to my endoscopy I had Weetabix for breakfast, McVities Penguins, the works.... and interestingly with all that, the most incredible headaches! A tense pain in the centre of the forehead... -
ARCHIVED Getting Tested In The Uk
cristiana replied to nikkijayne28's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
nikkijayne and oukethelousa Hello both. I have just found a really helpful resource that might interest you. I have also posted it under a separate topic, "Think Coeliac" in the International Room. It seems that 36% of celiac disease patients are currently incorrectly diagosed with IBS. It also lists all the tests advised under the National Institute... -
ARCHIVED "think Coeliac!" - Online Resource From Uk Gp Magazine, 'pulse'
cristiana posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My sister recently made me aware of the "Think Coeliac" resource that was posted to my brother-in-law's inbox (he is a GP) and I thought it might be of use to any British visitors to this site who are looking into how to get tested, symptoms, statistics pertinent the UK, etc, etc. Hope it helps. Open Original Shared Link PS It reveals that... -
ARCHIVED Getting Tested In The Uk
cristiana replied to nikkijayne28's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry - I have just re-read your post and missed that before your problems have been dismissed as IBS. That is more difficult. However, it may just be worth demanding one (in as nice a way as possible!). I just feel that the climate here is changing a bit, perhaps even since you last went in about your IBS, and doctors are being encouraged to "think... -
ARCHIVED Getting Tested In The Uk
cristiana replied to nikkijayne28's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi nikkijayne Welcome to the forum and to the two different spellings of celiac/coeliac. I will go with the British version today! My symptoms were not all gastric. Looking back there were various weird neurological things happening and my 'nervous stomach' which only played up now and again I thought was perhaps just a touch of IBS. Eventually... -
Don't worry about that sort of TMI on this site ! I am no doctor but in my own case the fissure healed very quickly. Literally loads of bright red blood in the toilet bowl one week, none the next, once I realised that the iron was really excacerbating this D and had greatly lowered the dosage. Whether a fissure would cause a scar visible by a camera...
