I have had pain and irritation recently and a weird feeling for a couple of months now. It has affected half my back and half my chest. Like you, same side, in my case, just the left. I have been told by one doctor the sensation is probably caused by having had shingles without the rash, i.e. nerve damage – look up Dermatomes, it is interesting. ...

Thanks so much nvsmom - glad you haven't got costochondritis any more! It doesn't sound nice. One doctor thought I could have Tietze syndrome but then said, "I'm not sure that explains the itchiness". I find it so hard dealing with uncertainty as I always imagine the worst. If anyone else has had either condition and found it caused itchiness in their...

I have pain and irritation generating from the left side of my rib cage, under the arm and breast area. Having all sorts of investigations but getting nowhere as doctors can't agree. Does this sound like it could be costochondritis to anyone who has suffered from it as reading stuff on line suggests the pain should come from the sternum, which isn't the...

ARCHIVED A Question For British Celiacs (Coeliacs) Re: Nhs Follow Ups
cristiana replied to cristiana's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Kate - thanks so much for your helpful post. It looks like it is your first one, too, so welcome to the forum! I see that it looks quite a road ahead but I guess it is much better your son and I know what we have got and the follow ups will help keep us on the straight and narrow. I am in my mid-forties so after years of not feeling well and unwittingly... -
Just wondering, can any British celiacs (coeliacs!) let me know if I will have to see my NHS gastro consultant forever more. I was diagnosed about a year ago and so far have had to see him in September, next appointment is in April. The last time I saw him he was very pleased with my blood test results, thankfully, but I have another lot lined up before...

ARCHIVED I Am A Miserable Mess After Eating Out Last Night
cristiana replied to Wakingup's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hope you feel better soon... but I can't help thinking that gluten just must have got in there somewhere. How about stock they might used for the chowder? Was it prepared in a dedicated gluten free area? I am British, so I don't know the recipe too well, but can beer be in chowder? Beer contains gluten I think. I was out with my sister and mother... -
ARCHIVED Internal Itch In Chest That Can't Be Scratched
cristiana replied to cristiana's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
LauraTX, thanks so much, I will look into it. It has just dawned on me since posting this whether if bringing dairy back into my diet might be responsible, as it didn't seem to be giving me an upset stomach anymore I assumed my villi were better and I could tolerate it again. I guess it might be making my chest feel itchy, the itchiness has always been more... -
ARCHIVED Internal Itch In Chest That Can't Be Scratched
cristiana posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hello all Not quite sure where to post this... but here goes. I am strict with the gluten-free diet. I have never been sure, however, if other foods are causing problems. Early January I had this mild but nonetheless annoying itch, ache and soreness begin in my upper left chest, under my left arm and under the breast. No swelling or rash or anything... -
Really good advice about vitamins and minerals above. From my own personal experience I am convinced that having low levels of B12 and iron were really contributors to my own feelings of anxiety. The anxiety started to improve when I started to take supplements, long before I was found to be Celiac and finally gave up gluten. Have you ever had those levels...

ARCHIVED Symptoms
cristiana replied to michaelki's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I really think one good place to start is that full celiac panel test that nvsmom talks about. So many of us have had odd symptoms, difficult to pin down sort of stuff, and the positive celiac test helped put the pieces together and then everything starts to make sense. I'm not a medically trained person but I do have a hernia (umbilical) which I can actually... -
Hi BlessedMommy So understand about your feeling weary of people's reactions. Although I actually did end up being diagnosed with celiac disease a few months ago the journey that led to DX was scary - terrible anxiety that came from nowhere, a liver function test that showed I had elevated globulin levels that indicated something nasty could be going...

ARCHIVED Symptoms
cristiana replied to michaelki's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not sure if what you have is wheat related. However something that one of my children had was discoid eczema which looked pretty similar. He was tested but was found not to have celiac disease. I hope you find an answer soon. -
ARCHIVED Accidental Glutening Affecting Sleep?
cristiana replied to cristiana's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This bug is taking ages to resolve. Still stomach cramps and night sweats, a week on. I suddenly thought just now... I had just finished a course of antibiotics the week before I got it, do you think the antibiotics might have taken out the "good bacteria" from my gut and that's why it's taking so long to budge? Or do you think it's just now I'm a celiac... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free, Low Carb, And Struggling To Maintain My Life
cristiana replied to journey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
LIke you, I am fast drawing the conclusion that eating out isn't worth it in terms of cross-contamination. So I try to suggest to friends that we meet for coffee instead of lunch, wherever possible and try to think of the money I am saving! Do you take vitamin B12 supplements as even though your levels may now be normal, they may still be on the low...- 11 replies

ARCHIVED Blood Blisters In Mouth?
cristiana replied to melreis's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wondering if you have ulcers, too? I had ulcers and what looked like blood blisters in my mouth prior to diagnosis with celiac and it felt like I was eating crushed glass at mealtimes. Soooo painful. I started drinking a fizzy vitamin drink which was v. rich in B12 and C vitamins and they went. Do you know what your B12 levels are like... might be related... -
Sorry Greebo - I've only just seen this. I buy Solgar Vitamin B12 from my local health food shop - but I see that they have an online shop - I've just found it: solgaronline.co.uk

ARCHIVED Neck Pain In 14 Year-Old
cristiana replied to kyates2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Interesting.... I had forgotten this but reading your post I remember I suffered terribly from bouts of neck pain when I was a child, and it stopped in my teens. I was only diagnosed a celiac a few months ago - I'm now in my forties - so I don't know if there was any connection, but I do know it really interrupted my sleep at times and can make you feel quite... -
ARCHIVED Accidental Glutening Affecting Sleep?
cristiana replied to cristiana's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks girls! Almost as soon as I posted this my sister rang to say her little boy had it too - and he's not a celiac! And we were there at the same party. Sorry to take up forum time, just goes to show how easy it is to attribute everything to gluten! -
ARCHIVED Accidental Glutening Affecting Sleep?
cristiana posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hello Celiacs On Saturday I ate what was supposed to be a slice of gluten free birthday cake. I now wonder if the baker thought to check the baking powder, cocoa, decorations - etc. I certainly should have! Because Saturday night I had a nightmare. Sunday ditto. Both nights woke up in a cold sweat. Monday Morning my stomach hurt, felt ill at lunch... -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Problems - Nodule
cristiana replied to cristiana's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Stella. I am sorry, like quite a few of us on the forum, sometimes it does feel as if the celiac test is just the tip of the iceberg! My thyroid ultrasound came back showing I had several tiny nodules, but one over 1cm, so they told me I could keep it if they found that it was normal but guess what... they didn't get enough cells to be 100% sure... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else ?
cristiana replied to Aquadan005's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In the UK, or at least certainly in the area where I live, first you have the blood test for celiac on the National Health Service, if that is positive, then you have an endoscopy and then if that is positive you are referred to a nutritionalist. It is standard procedure. I think it was helpful because it was the nutritionalist who first stressed to me... -
Hi. I'm in the UK so the dosage is in mgs - but my box if ferrous glucanate is labelled 300mg and I take two a day. The instructions are as follows... "Adults (including the elderly) and children over 12 years For the prevention of iron deficiency: take two tablets daily For the treatment of iron deficiency: take four to six tablets daily in divided...

ARCHIVED Tinnitus And Balance Problems/mild Vertigo
cristiana replied to Pegleg84's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks for that Kamma - that is v. helpful. -
One thing to consider might be trying ferrous gluconate - it is much kinder on the stomach. I had awful trouble with other iron supplements but find that taking a couple of gluconate tablets with water on an empty stomach first thing, an hour before eating, and things are pretty much normal in that department! I started supplements six months before my...

ARCHIVED Tinnitus And Balance Problems/mild Vertigo
cristiana replied to Pegleg84's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Dizziness/vertigo/imbalance can be such a difficult thing to live with but what interests me is that judging by the websites devoted to the subject it is a problem that blights the lives of many non-celiacs and often there is no formal diagnosis made - or after a while, a different diagnosis is given. My problems started in July three months into the...
