  1. I make meatballs substituting 2 slices gluten-free bread, crumbled, for the breadcrumbs, brown them and add a jar of Ragu sauce and simmer for a while (the longer, the better). I serve the sauce over Tinkyada Brown Rice Spaghetti--yum!!! As long as you don't overcook the spaghetti, its hard to tell the difference.
  2. A colonoscopy will not tell you if there is damage to your villi--they are in the small intestine and you would need an endoscopy to obtain samples of tissue to be biopsied. The instrument is put down the throat, and through the stomach. The symptoms you listed could be associated with gluten sensitivity of some sort. The blood work would be a good idea...
  3. I also have completely flat feet. I didn't know there was a connection--interesting.
  4. I also found information contained in "The Gluten Free Bible" inaccurate--one of the meds. I take daily was listed in the book as "not gluten free". I called the drug co., spoke to a pharmacist who told me the drug was gluten-free--the starch used was from potato! A book I would recommend is "Dangerous Grains".
  5. I called Hershey's yesterday (the line was busy numerous times, but I finally got thru) to ask about York Peppermint Patties. The person I spoke to, after hearing my question, asked me if I had Celiac and I said yes. She said that Hershey's took food allergies and Celiac Disease very seriously and proceded to answer my question by going over the ingredients...
  6. I keep a bottle of Burts Bees Carrot Nutritive Lotion near my kitchen sink. I also use Johnsons Softlotion Creamy Moisturizing Lotion, and moisturizing lotion by The Gluten Free Savonnerie. On my face and eye area, I use Alba Ultra Pure Moisture Cream.
  7. Doed anyone know if Welchs Concord Grape Juice is gluten free?
  8. YES! I thought I got a reaction from their Honey Rice Puffins but since I thought they were safe, I couldn't figure out what happened. Can you trust anything???
  9. Berneses, I don't know if this helps at all but for years Drs. said my nausea and dizziness was because of sinus problems and allergies. The thing was I never had any classic nasal symptoms but I don't think they could come up with anything else! (these 2 symptoms were the main ones for me until 2 yrs. ago when the celiac disease came on big time.) Anyway...
  10. I was 49 (still am) and have had problems for 20 years. They got a lot worse 2 yrs. ago.
  11. Carrie, Yum! I'm going to make it with the apples
  12. It's true that morning headaches can be caused by high BP. I used to wake up with pain in the back of my head and neck (at the base of my skull) and it would usually last untill I took a shower or was up and around for a while. It turned out I had high BP. After going on medication, the headaches went away and have not returned--its been about 6 mo. I...
  13. Linda, Thank you so much for checking. I could never find a phone # to call. Well, since it turns out to be gluten-free, it must have been something else that made me sick or maybe I was sensitive to the ingredients--I am noticing that the longer I'm gluten-free, the more sensitive I am to a lot of other things. As I remember, the main complaint with the...
  14. Hi Nancy, I like good "ol Cream of Rice with pure maple syrup, raisins and chopped walnuts. You could doctor it up with anything you wanted, gluten-free of course!
  15. I believe that EnerG foods has dairy free chocolate chips.
  16. Bones, I don't know where you are in NJ but I go to Dr. John Kravitz in Mount Laurel. All I know is that he was the first and only Dr. who took my symptoms seriously and ran the tests. I agree, though, that if you plan on being tested that you do not stop eating gluten until after the tests to insure an accurate result. Good luck to you!
  17. I do know that I was definately glutened by a hair gel with wheat starch -- after I bit my nails shortly after using it and after washing my hands. (embarrasing, but thats how I deal with stress-since junior high!) I was sick for 5 days after. Another time, I used a facial cleanser that was questionable and was also sick for 5 days. Yesterday, I ordered...
  18. jenvan, Thank you for that link--it was great! Also, just last night, the CBS station from Philadelphia had a piece on Celiac on the local 11:00 news!! I could hardly believe my eyes. It featured a local woman with celiac disease, a Dr. from Bryn Mawr Hospital in Phila. and shots from Whole Foods.
  19. If by "icing sugar" you mean 10x sugar, I buy Domino"s--all of their sugars are gluten-free.
  20. You're right--I learned that within 8 seconds or so, anything that is applied to the skin is absorbed. Frankly, I don't know if what is absorbed finds its way into the digestive tract or if just circulating through the bloodstream can harm us as Celiacs. Does anyone know for sure? I've been wondering about this.
  21. Hi TBB! I have what sounds like the exact same thing going on with my left eyelid. Its actually been happening for years and back when it first began. a Dr. told me it was eczema and prescribed a steriod cream and also said I could use a cortisone cream-otc. The only time it would go away (before going gluten-free) was when I used the creams. Since going...
  22. I also was alert after the procedure and I had both an endoscopy & colonoscopy. Actually, my husband and I stopped at Whole Foods on the way home! (I was supposed to go home and rest, but went anyway) They have to look at the samples under a microscope to see if there was any villi damage. The Dr. can see inflammation during the procedure if present...
  23. Hope this helps--for as long as I can remember: sensitive stomach, nausea, being lightheaded. Two years ago, iron deficiancy anemia, lightheaded, urgent and frequent D, tingling in face, strange sensation in left arm and hands, depression, anxiety, easy brusing, brain fog, excema on left eyelid, indigestion with pressure under ribs, 15 lb. weight loss in...
