  1. Everyone has a different gluten reaction experience--for me, before I was gluten-free, I was always sick. One period of being sick kind of blended into the next. I never knew if I would be sick, say for a special occasion or a trip, etc. I didn't know what was wrong, so I'd try to "stay healthy" and hope for the best. Now that I'm gluten-free, I feel...
  2. What do you mean by "keep it from getting dry"? During or after baking?
  3. Yes! A few years ago, pre gluten-free, I went on the Atkins diet with a friend. I lost about 30 lbs. and was on BP meds. at the time. I got incredibly dizzy, and my BP got really low. Was taken off the meds. and was fine for a short time, but then it crept back up. Now I take Norvasc and Lisonopril. Anyway, hope you get your results back quickly
  4. In the year or so before I was DX, I had numbness and a strange feeling on my left side starting from my cheek, my left arm, and both legs and feet. The legs and feet were worse when I was laying down. It scared me because I had no idea what it was. I'm gluten-free almost 6 months now and I still get it in my face along with a feeling like my face is burning...
  5. My BP is also in the same range as yours. I take 2 different BP meds. now and they seem to be keeping it in the normal range. Its been high for about 8 years now. Does this have something to do with celiac disease or just a coincidence?
  6. I strongly agree that you need to ALWAYS have safe food with you when you leave your house! I know its easy to forget or let it go right after breakfast when you're not hungry, but a little pre-planning will prevent accidents later on. I don't even go to the grocery store without at least an Envirokidz bar in my purse. On your day off, I suggest go shopping...
  7. Jeanne--Thanks for letting us know so we don't have to worry about ya! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your husband.
  8. Judy, Just to add my 2 cents on the casein connection. I was told by my Dr. to go gluten-free and dairy free after my DX. I went completely gluten-free but allowed myself butter (no other dairy at all). About 3 or so weeks ago, I finally gave up the butter. There was a definate improvement. The other thing I thought of when I saw your prediciment was...
  9. I'm gluten-free almost 6 months now and up until recently, I'd begin to get symptoms within 1-2 hours. Mostly D, cramping, fatigue and anxiety. It would go on for 5 days or so. Last week, I think I had a reaction--I don't know how it got into me--but I felt anxious and depressed and had mild cramping but no D. Maybe it wasn't from gluten--I'm super careful...
  10. I think the oil should work out fine--I do roasted potatoes with olive oil in the oven all the time.
  11. Rice Guy, Thanks for the link to Galaxy Foods. I've been looking for dairy substitutes that don't use soy.
  12. Thanks to everyone who helps the board run and be there for all of us Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
  13. I make fruit crisps quite frequently. Just grease an 8 by 8 in. square pan, peel and slice into it 5 or 6 apples (I also use peaches or a combination of peaches and blueberries in the summer). In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup brown sugar, 2 tblsp. rice flour, and 1 tsp. cinnamon. Cut in 1/2 cup butter, margerine or butter flavored Crisco until mixture is...
  14. I use Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar. The problem with salad dressings generally is the thickeners used may be wheat based. I know that Vlassic Pickles are safe. A lot of vinegars are safe, but not all--same with pickles. The safest thing to do is to call the companies in question.
  15. I don't think a flat iron would make your hair fall out. More likely, it could cause it to break off, possibly near the scalp or elswhere. Especially if the hair is very dry from the use of chemical treatments.
  16. How wonderful! Happy birthday a day late
  17. It was pretty good--I saw it a few weeks ago. Great to see Celiac discussed on TV
  18. Rachel--I think you hit the nail on the head. Of course there are negetives, Celiac is no walk in the park. But having this site to go to is a great thing we all have and is a definate positive. For me, finally knowing what is wrong with me after nearly 20 years is positive. So is knowing I can control it with a change in diet. Not that I'm saying...
  19. Nantzie--Your stepmom sounds like a smart cookie! I got the runaround trying to get my biopsy results, too. They told me "if you don't hear in 5 days, call the office." 5 days go by, I call. The Dr. was not in so they couldn't give me the results. This went on and on--he was never there when I called. Or was he? What do they have to gain by not...
  20. I also have a mild curvature that was found by accident 10 years ago on a back X-ray. It has never caused me any problems. I actually haven't even thought about it until I read this thread!
  21. Hi Kaiti--I have another recipe that I was going to post last night but my house kind of turned into Grand Central Station! Anyway, this is what I call ITALIAN SPANISH RICE 1 onion 3 green peppers 2 ribs celery 1 lb. good ground beef 1 cup raw Uncle Ben's Converted Rice 1 bottle Ragu Sauteed Onion & Garlic Sauce 1 small pkg. frozen green beans...
  22. Jen, I checked out the Sephora link--it looked great! Thanks. Also, I forgot to mention before that Ulta Stores carry a limited number of Bare Escentuals products. I've seen the foundations there as well as a few other things.
  23. I'm a bit older than you, mandigirl, but I also had a problem w/ hairloss. Not a problem until about 2 years ago when my celiac disease kicked in and I was very sick. At that time, I also was having my hair straightened w/ chemicals at a salon. I still do not know for sure what caused the hair loss--which was dramatic, hair between my fingers coming out...
  24. Kaseys Mom--I bought the Spectrum solid shortening last weekend at Whole Foods. I plan to use it to make a pie crust for Thanksgiving. This will be my first try at a crust gluten-free. Have you ever used it in a crust? If so, how did it work? Thanks Patti
  25. I get mine through QVC. They have a BE line #1-800-345-4492. They will send you a free catalogue. They offer reduced shipping through the catalogue--$3.97 for the whole order. I like the catalogue because it shows the whole line w/ all the colors. Also, tomorrow (11/19), QVC will be featuring BE throughout the day. Yes, I am a bit of a QVC junkie!
