  1. It used to bother me, but now I just don't participate. Don't watch much tv, and what I do is tivo'ed so I don't have to watch commercials. (Not all products are bad. ) Only go out shopping for stuff I've already said "hey, I need this", like any other time of year. So, other than the snow this morning (!?! ?!?) it doesn't have to be a lot different...
  2. lol... I only made one version of each dish for thanksgiving. No multiples here. People could all eat the same thing. short grain rices are ... rices that have short grains. the grain of rice varies in length, depending on the variety you get. basmati and jasmine, for instance, tend to be long grain, and the standard 'white rice' is often long...
  3. Actually, the rice dream *ice cream* does not have barley in it, or used in the processing. Yep, it's been confirmed with the manufacturer, and nope, it doesn't make any sense, in my mind. But there you go. The "milk", of course, does. That's not to say that something else in there isn't bothering you, of course.
  4. Just thought I'd offer a couple of alternatives for these items that are friendly for you so that you don't have to go through this again: 1) stuffing made from short grain rices (gives a similar texture, though slightly different) and the same seasonings and other ingredients (with more water) as regular stuffing 2) sweet potatoes can be served just...
  5. Actually, all seven of us making the Open Original Shared Link quite liked it. Open Original Shared Link
  6. how do we people live? by eating foods that we like that don't make us sick. the real question is how long it took us to figure out what those were. you say you were dx'ed a month ago, so you've been eating gluten-free for a month. a couple of questions pop to mind: 1) have you been certain to eliminate ALL sources of gluten from your diet...
  7. I love my rice cooker, and it produces perfect rice every time, but it's pricey. (It's a Zojirushi fuzzy-logic rice cooker.) Cheap ones will work fine too, and they may take half an hour (depending on what kind of rice you're using and how much you're cooking at once), but they are much more reliable and easy than stove top cooking, which, while still quite...
  8. If you want to get a blood test, you need to be eating plenty of gluten for approximately three months prior to the test. You don't have to get a blood test to eat gluten free - the diet is entirely up to you - but for your potential future family, the test could prove useful. There are pros on cons on both sides.
  9. hmm... it's hard to remember that from three years ago when my symptoms weren't that definite: less intestinal cramping and sharp pains less intestinal noises (bourbourygmi) less gas less dizziness/disorientation less fatigue less crankiness
  10. I prefer crumb crusts myself, and this year, made muffins (just plain ones - with cinnamon and nutmeg) and dried them out, then crushed them up in the CuisinArt, and used a little apple sauce to hold them together for the apple pie crust. Tasty, and healthy.
  11. What do we do with turkey leftovers? Eat them! (Yes, as just turkey, and we have, oh, probably six pounds of turkey leftovers. ) Some things I've done in the past: turkey soup turkey enchiladas salad with turkey And something to try this year, later today: Leftover Thanksgiving Sushi! (no, I'm not kidding )
  12. It's pretty common to find adjusting to the diet difficult - it is, after all, a MAJOR change. You may find it easier, if finding specialty items is a problem, to change your diet on a more fundamental level. Rather than eating things that might often have bread, or pasta, or other things that are now off limits, switch to other types of foods entirely...
  13. There are some things you can have at some chinese places, and thai is even easier, but it takes some time to learn and navigate. Thai has plenty of curries and noodle dishes made with rice noodles; you need to check on sauces, of course, but have good odds of finding things. At Chinese, some of the white sauces are fine, though I have had bad luck with...
  14. Congrats! I'm glad it went so well!
  15. Turkey just came out of the oven, so we should eat in about an hour. Our menu: Starters (served as a late, light llunch) Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Soup with Ginger Mixed Baby Greens and Spinach with Pomegranate Seeds, Star Fruit, and Raspberry Dressing Ornish-diet Friendly Raw Brownies Dinner Roast Turkey with Fresh Garlic, Oregano, Rosemary...
  16. If there was a complete and total cure - "hey look, you have new genes, and it's totally chemically impossible for them to damage your intestines or other internal organs just because you eat gluten" sort of thing - of course I'd go for it. Gluten exists in our world, and there's absolutely no way that we can 100% guarantee that we will never ever ever make...
  17. I remember seeing these a couple years ago, before they improved the accuracy. It's the sort of thing I'd ordinarily be into, but there were a couple of problems with the current state of technology: 1) time - it takes at least five minute to do even the short, qualitative test, or half an hour for the longer, quantitative test. 2) food mixing - you...
  18. doing this partial, kinda reintroducing of a little bit of gluten maybe thing is just going to make it harder for you to tell if you're reacting or not. the best way to test is to just take a big dose of gluten (bagels are generally made with high-gluten flour, and a good place to start) and go for it. otherwise, you get back to feeling a little worse and...
  19. Just a few words for the teflon subject: 1) most of the non-stick materials used in pans these days are not teflon. they've moved on, years ago, to much more effective things for cooking. 2) non-stick coatings can, and do, release harmful fumes, which can, and do, kill birds. they have, I've heard, been suspected of contributing to the death of people...
  20. I haven't ever actually had a doctor, research study, or even random website *specifically* say what a positive anti-gliadin antibody test (either IgA or IgG) could possibly be for, other than gluten intolerance, and there isn't really any recognized gluten intolerance outside of celiac disease by the mainstream medical community. While it's true that the...
  21. Because you absorbed at least a good portion of the sugar that the carbs were converted to - which translates directly to energy, particularly if you hadn't eaten enough earlier in the day. People with celiac react differently to gluten. These days, I have a delayed reaction, and don't know until at least four hours later, as my intestines start hurting...
  22. turkey may well be a problem (especially if it's been stuffed)... ham could be a problem depending on glazing... gravy's a problem in most cases (flour thickener)... mashed potatoes are often ok, but it depends on if they used juices from the turkey in it at all... pie's are out... that nasty green bean casserole stuff () has bread in it... ...
  23. Well, what tests are in the celiac screening? It should have included, at least, antigliadin IgA, antigliadin IgG, tissue transglutamase (tTg) IgA, tTg IgG, and total IgA. If you've been essentially gluten-free for five months, then there's a good chance that your tests would be negative, even if you had celiac disease. You can't show antibodies to something...
  24. Silk Soy milk IS gluten free.
  25. There is no reason to sacrifice your health to keep someone else's peace - they decide to go wonky on you, after all. In that situation, simply say "No thank you, it may make me sick, and I'm not willing to risk it." Focus on the fact that IT IS YOUR CHOICE. It's not their choice what you eat; it's all your choice.
