  1. If you eat a healthy, well rounded diet (variety is KEY!), and never relied on fortified cereal and bread for iron and folic acid, then you don't need to add anything to your diet after taking gluten out. If you did rely on artificially fortified products for these ingredients (and many americans do just that for folic acid especially), then you'll probably...
  2. When you get really tired of explaining, don't. (I can see having to explain to your parents, but that's about it.) Other than that, it's a "I know how to handle the diet, but it gets tiring having to be reminded of it by everyone all the time, so just let me do what I need to do" thing.
  3. I don't much miss bread either. There's nothing that's quite the same to me, and there's nothing that I can't adapt around. (And I'm not cheap when it comes to food... so my bill from Whole Foods last night proves. :-P )
  4. A week isn't very long. (Many of us have reactions to gluten that last that long! :-) ) You may find things changing a lot (good/bad, back/forth) in the weeks to come, but stick with it! You may find that, after being gluten-free for a number of weeks, you may find you are more sensitive to small amounts of gluten, but not *everyone* finds that to...
  5. Burt's Bees (particularly the peppermint) tastes better anyway! (I love that stuff! And it's got a healthier composition of ingredients!)
  6. hehehe... haven't had dairy in nearly two years, I drink wine maybe twice a year, avoid *all* artificial sweeteners (and don't use much of real ones anyway), don't often over indulge in salt, and have checked on caffeine and chocolate as triggers, as well as hormones, but the migraines were far too often for that. (It was far more often to feel one than...
  7. Pretty much, pancake recipes are a guide, not set in stone. Never add the full amount of liquid to start with. Add everything but the water/milk/juice, then add that liquid until you get the right consistency.
  8. Or, in my case, I believe I'm casein intolerant, but not particularly lactose intolerant, so the lactose binder in my medications doesn't bother me (and there isn't enough of a chance of significant casein contamination from pharmaceutical grade lactose for me to worry about that).
  9. At the end of the day, don't look to her for acceptance or understanding. That is irrelevant. Look to her for only one thing: respect of your choices. Period. That goes for you and your children. She can agree or disagree all she likes, but it is your choice, and by arguing with you about it, she is disrespecting you.
  10. Lipsticks, facial moisturizers, and shampoos *can* enter the mouth to some degree, and should be checked for ingredients. Do call the dentist and have them check the ingredients in the products they'd need to use on you.
  11. Regular corn flakes use barley malt. You can, however, order specialy gluten-free cereals online in quantity and have it shipped to you, or talk to the grocery store about ordering it for you.
  12. The only one I've ever heard of was Contadina's Tomato Paste w/ Italian Seasonings. It's probably a flavoring issue. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link
  13. If I get anything at a chinese place, it is steamed shrimp and vegetables. I seemed to have problems with chicken at one place, so I tend to stick with shrimp, but if you are *very* clear that you want *nothing* else on it, it *should* be fine. Someone here once noted that they knew a chinese place that cooked their rice with broth, which you'd want to...
  14. the autoimmune reaction does not take place in the stomach, it takes place in the intestines. and there is no shot that will change the genetics that leads to the chemical cascade that causes intestinal damage.
  15. Use a creamer potato like a red or yukon gold - NOT a starchy potato like a russet - then steam until cooked through, mash, add a bit of olive oil (if you want), and chicken broth (I use Imagine, in the box), until you get the consistency you want. You can also add a bit of garlic and rosemary. :-) And some salt.
  16. I don't think people would find the diet so hard if there was some general level of knowledge about food and cooking. Bring back home ec! Bring back nutrition classes and cooking classes! Make sure that people don't feel lost in a kitchen! You can always *choose* to eat out ever meal, but you shouldn't have to feel like you have to, because cooking is...
  17. Short grain brown rice won't give the same results, but it's not bad either. It's *different* than regular white rice sushi, but it's good in its own right. :-)
  18. Different types of beans (black, garbanzo, kidney, etc.), lentils, sweet potatoes (not the same family as regular potatoes), other root vegetables (carrots, rutabegas, turnips, etc.), other grains (millet, quinoa, amaranth, teff, buckwheat, etc.). There are lots of other choices. :-)
  19. Laura, a question: It's my understanding that the recognition of the 33-mer that triggers the reaction occurs in the gut. So I don't understand how suppressing zonulin to 'keep the gates closed' makes any difference. Is the implication here that the immune reaction does *not* take place in the gut, but outside of the intestines?
  20. I always go to a residence type place that has a small kitchenette (including fridge and small stove). It's worked great.
  21. Yep, gliandin's the protein in wheat. But you also need to avoid barley, rye, and oats. It may take a while for you to feel better, so you need to be patient on that front. And vigilent to avoid hidden gluten like barley malt in most cereals and the wheat in most soy sauces and so on. It is vital that you are 100% gluten free - the autoimmune response...
  22. Trader Joe's says that their tomato paste is safe. The only one I've heard of that isn't is a variety of Contadina's.
  23. Are you sure it's a glutened feeling? I could use those words to describe my migraines, and they are not necessarily connected to gluten for me.
  24. There's no way for you to know other than trying. I think goat's milk bothered me as well, but I also never found one that I could tolerate the taste. ;-)
  25. Given that zonulin is there for a reason, I think it would still be the sort of thing that I would take only when going out in case of contamination. There are lots of meds designed to 'correct' things in the body that do their job quite well, but because almost everything in the human body is a multitasker, the drugs have unexpected consequences as well...
