  1. I agree with Tiffany. A pill wouldn't be a cure, it would be medication to prevent a reaction (in order to cure me, they'd have to change my genes.....that is not possible). All medications have side effects. Why take meds if you can just avoid gluten? But I would like to have those pills around for going out. Or even for the occasional splurge (maybe...
  2. Shannon, since your son wasn't exposed to gluten for long when tested, and with having 'toddler diarrhea' (which is a terrible term, as that is NEVER normal), I expect that he is intolerant to gluten, despite all the negative tests. The evidence is his diarrhea clearing up on the gluten-free diet. It is entirely possible that his fever, flu-like symptoms...
  3. Kandi, you really, really need to get your son's levels of calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, ferretin, B12, vitamin K tested. As well as a bone density scan. Because, even though it's hard to believe, celiac disease can cause osteoporosis in children already, due to malabsorption of calcium. And even before you do the testing (or are waiting for results)...
  4. Oh, how is it possible for doctors to be so ignorant! First, welcome to this board, I hope you get the answers you need here. People DON'T outgrow celiac disease. Your husband still has it and doesn't need to be tested again. He needs to be gluten-free for life. Your son obviously has it, too. If there is damage to the villi (in the SMALL intestine...
  5. It's too bad some of you seem to need the Dapsone. Please make sure your doctor monitors your liver closely, as Dapsone, especially if taken for an extended time, can cause liver damage.
  6. I'm glad you worked out a workable compromise. I hope it will all go smoothly.
  7. To my limited understanding of the genes behind celiac disease, it looks like that you have one celiac disease gene, and one gluten sensitivity gene. In other words, you come by having celiac disease honestly.
  8. My heart palpitations have decreased since being treated for adrenal burnout and hypothyroidism. Also, it is possible that your levels of potassium and/or magnesium could be low, which can also cause palpitations. I don't know what could cause you to hyperventilate. With me only fear or extreme pain would cause that.
  9. Either you or a doctor (and that includes naturopaths) can buy those meds (depending on their strength) from Dr. Wilson's website, and then the naturopathic doctor will supervise treatment. The medicine I am taking can only be bought by registered doctors, including naturopaths. My naturopath sold it to me, and is treating me with it. Since most MDs haven...
  10. Rebecca, Celiac Sprue and celiac disease is the same thing. And no, not everybody with celiac disease has DH as well.
  11. Amy, are you sure you want to call off being gluten-free for that meal? I think your family might be pleasantly surprised by how good the food is. Why can't your sister-in-law not bring something like a salad, or a potato dish thickened with corn starch, or do the mashed potatoes or something else that's naturally gluten-free? It would be an opportunity...
  12. Here is a link to a wonderful site, that will help you immensely. It is by a former member here (well, he is officially still a member), with the user name of gfp. He is British, living in Paris, and has put up this site specifically for English-speaking people with celiac disease who are visiting Paris. Open Original Shared Link
  13. Even though this was no joke for you, you made me laugh. You were saying that your husband had a bowl of goldfish he was sharing with your daughter. And I envisioned a goldfish bowl, with life goldfish swimming in it, and didn't get it, I was confused. And when finally it dawned on me that you were talking about a bowlful of CRACKER goldfish, I had to laugh...

    ARCHIVED Bloated

I am intolerant to all grains (including rice and corn), legumes (which includes beans and soy) nightshades (potato flour is in many of those mixes) and tapioca (those are just some of my intolerances). Since all mixes have at least one of those, usually more than one, I can't have any. In fact, the only gluten-free starch I can tolerate a little of now and...
  15. Casein is the milk protein, which would be in cheese, yogurt, milk, sour cream, ice cream........you know, everything that is made from milk. A lot of intolerances never get picked up by testing, because many times you'll have a delayed reaction. If you don't immediately react to something, it will be missed by almost all conventional testing, and the...
  16. Ana, you can eat potatoes, rice, vegetables, meat, fish, fruit, all the normal, ordinary plain foods other than things made with flour. Cook yourself a normal dinner, just don't thicken gravy (if you want to have gravy) with flour, but rather with cornstarch. You can use simple herbs and spices (be wary of mixes). It is easier to not try to replace...
  17. Wow, your numbers are normalizing quickly, and your levels of essential nutrients are going up, as well as your hemoglobin etc. improving. Your diet is definitely working, and your villi must be healing VERY fast. So, you're bloated after drinking milk? I am afraid you're at least lactose intolerant then, maybe even casein. Try taking lactaid with your...
  18. Armywife, I had the same problem as your daughter. A year ago in October I eliminated gluten, which stopped the chronic diarrhea within a day, and my terribly fibromyalgia pains went away within two weeks (when I eliminated all lectins, of which gluten is one). My stomach aches took about a month to completely go away. It looked like I had found my answers...
  19. Hi Brandy, and welcome to this board. I doubt that cheating once in a while will stop you from getting pregnant. And not all celiacs have trouble conceiving. I would conceive very, very easily. My problem was staying pregnant, I've had eight miscarriages. Of course, at that time I had no clue about celiac disease. That said, you really, really need to...
  20. That is excellent. And because it is an official document, rather than a note from a parent, I bet a lot of teachers would pay more attention when seeing this.
  21. Congratulations on the arrival of little Samantha!
  22. Happy Birthday, Elonwy!
  23. There are lots of people with celiac disease who have no apparent symptoms. You might find that suddenly he'll realize that he actually DID have symptoms after going gluten-free, when those symptoms go away. They could seem completely unrelated to celiac disease. He hasn't yet developed malabsorption, that is a good thing, the gluten-free diet will ensure...
  24. I am excited about this! I just read a report that it has become mandatory for personal care products and cosmetics here in Canada to list the ingredients. It's about time! They have until 2007 to comply, but have to provide lists of ingredients in the meantime. Here is the link to the story. Open Original Shared Link
  25. If those spices have paprika in them, they wouldn't be nightshade-free, as it's derived from chile peppers. All peppers are part of the nightshade family. Open Original Shared Link
