Debbie, you do have a point, and that's why I make an effort, for the kids. The only reason I bother with a Christmas tree is really, because the little grandchildren will look at it like it's the most wonderful thing they've ever seen. Seeing the wonder in their eyes is worth it. My daughter will do a lot of crafts with her kids (and I always used to...

ARCHIVED Modified Wheat Starch
Ursa Major replied to zachsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is the scoop. In Europe they claim that modified wheat starch is gluten-free and fine for celiacs. Their definition of gluten-free is that 20 parts per million (in some parts of Europe its 200 ppm) is fine for people with celiac disease. For a lot of us it is, but for the most sensitive ones, it isn't. A lot of people will still get sick from wheat starch... -
ARCHIVED Can't Stand It Anymore!
Ursa Major replied to whitball's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Donna, we went on a cruise in January. The problem with the shore excursions is, that you officially aren't allowed to take any food off the ship, or bring any back onto the ship, either. We overcame that by signing up for an excursion that didn't leave until 1:00 PM, and ate a very late breakfast at 11:00 AM (they made me stir fry three times a day). I... -
ARCHIVED Questions About My Tests......
Ursa Major replied to DaCat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Shelly, a biopsy would be quite useless at this point (because of eating nearly gluten-free for a while), as would more blood testing (same reason). If you could afford it, I would suggest you get tested through Open Original Shared Link, their tests will be accurate up to a year of being gluten-free. If you get the full panel, you'd also know if you have... -

ARCHIVED My First Shopping Fiasco (questions)
Ursa Major replied to alveraz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Al, why is vinegar out? Unless you're one of those extremely sensitive people who'd react to the minutest trace amounts of gluten, vinegar is fine. I believe even Nini (who is very sensitive) uses mayonnaise. I think it's Hellman's mayo, though. I am sure you'll figure it out eventually. Since I can't use any of the items you mentioned because of other... -
We have limited our gift giving to $50.00 a kid (that includes our three kids-in-law ), and around $25.00 for grandkids (they're all 6 and under and don't expect more anyway, since they haven't figured out the worth of money yet). That way we don't spend a fortune (even though it adds up, too, with eight kids and six grandkids). I do most of my shopping...

ARCHIVED Symptoms...
Ursa Major replied to Shebah's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Shebah, and welcome to this board. Your symptoms certainly could point to celiac disease. The blood tests are not that reliable and produce many false negatives. Why don't you just try the gluten-free diet and see if it helps? That's what I did, and many other here as well, with amazing results. Nobody can stop you from changing your diet, it's your body... -
ARCHIVED What Am, Or Am I Not Doing Right!?!
Ursa Major replied to Mal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Mallory, have you tried eliminating dairy? It could cause all of those problems you still have. As could soy or a number of other things. Your joint pains could be caused by other intolerances, too. Mine sure were, they're gone now unless I cheat and eat something like rice pasta (which I did the other day, and I suffered for it). Check my links on... -

ARCHIVED Why Am I Not Getting Better?
Ursa Major replied to SarahTorg's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
You're right to question Dapsone while you're breastfeeding. First you should try to stop using iodized salt, switch to sea salt. Second, make sure your laundry detergent, fabric softener, soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner etc. are all gluten-free. Plus, check your vitamins and check with the manufacturer that the vitamin E in your vitamins is not derived... -

Why don't you buy soy sauce that has no gluten? Then you won't have to worry about it! Nobody will notice the difference. moceansylvia, you might have to eliminate all grains (meaning no pasta, bread, cake, muffins etc. at all, other than for a treat) before you'll lose any weight. A lot of the overweight (rather than underweight) celiacs can't really... -
ARCHIVED Broken Bones
Ursa Major replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My youngest daughter broke her leg when she was three. They thought she only needed a cast for six weeks, but it took forever to heal, she was in a cast for three months. After the first six weeks I started giving her a liquid calcium supplement, and that seemed to speed up healing. Susie has not been diagnosed with celiac disease (and since her bloodwork... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Ever Diagnosed With Fibromyalgia?
Ursa Major replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I found that almost ALL people with fibro are 'diagnosed' with IBS as well. They're all complaining of stomach and bowel problems, on top of the pain and fatigue. I posted several times, trying to get them to understand that IBS is NOT a valid diagnosis, and is likely caused by food intolerances. I had told them a few years before that, that the nightshade... -
Elonwy, you need to talk to him about this. Because he might sense that you don't feel like touching and kissing him, and might think you don't really like him. He needs to understand that it's not really him, but rather your fear of being glutened that is the problem. Once he understands how easy it is for you to get glutened, and that in the end he might...

ARCHIVED Is My Mother Wrong Or Right?
Ursa Major replied to Mal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I was still using shampoo with wheat germ oil, my scalp was covered in a rash and excruciatingly itchy. I don't know if it was DH or not, but it doesn't really matter. When I switched to gluten-free shampoo and conditioner (Dove), that problem slowly went away. My head rarely gets that itchy now. So, whether the shampoo got into my mouth or not I... -
ARCHIVED Ever Been Glutend By A Kiss?
Ursa Major replied to breann6's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I KNOW it can happen, and it doesn't matter if you ate or not. Just the kisses were bad, and then backwashing into your drink............no wonder you're sick. You need to stop the habit of letting kids kiss you on the lips, unless they are gluten-free with you. Explain to them that it is safer for you if from now on you kiss each other on the cheek instead... -

ARCHIVED Not Eating
Ursa Major replied to armywife's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You're not a horrible mother. If doctors would be more knowledgeable and give you better information, we wouldn't have to figure it all out on our own. Others here will know of good brands for children's vitamins that are gluten-free. Have you checked shampoo, conditioner, bubble bath, toothpaste, soap, lotion etc. for gluten? It will hide in all kinds... -
ARCHIVED What's Going On> He's Not Hungry Any More? Is This Good Or Bad?
Ursa Major replied to ARK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sure, ADHD is a known symptom of celiac disease! I wonder how many kids are on Ritalin, that should be on a gluten-free diet instead. I think one reason your son doesn't feel like eating is, that he was addicted to gluten. It was the addiction that kept him wanting to eat all the time, not normal hunger pangs. Now that his 'drug' (gluten) is gone, he... -
ARCHIVED Dizzy All The Time...
Ursa Major replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have adrenal fatigue, and it can result in being dizzy all the time. That's the first thing my naturopath asks me every time I see him (now that he is treating the adrenals and the low thyroid), "How is your dizziness, has it improved?" Because, apparently, that is one of the most obvious signs of adrenal fatigue. And no, I am still dizzy all the time... -
Lister, even if you do have celiac disease, a three-month challenge will NOT be enough to get a positive biopsy after being gluten-free for as long as you have been. It would have to be six months to a year to even have a remote chance of being valid. And I can see that your weight loss would be because of your unbalanced diet. You need to eat vegetables...

ARCHIVED Confused!
Ursa Major replied to clhsc's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Unfortunately, you have one of those ignorant doctors who doesn't know that being gluten-free for four months would result in a false negative, even if you would have tested positive in July. And it is very likely that the endoscopy will be negative for celiac disease as well, same reason. However, if you want to really know and have an 'official' paper... -

Well, I USED to be one of those, too! I homeschooled my two youngest daughters, until I had to send Susie to school three years ago, because I simply had no energy and was not doing a good job anymore. My mother-in-law told my husband after the fourth child that she was going to disown him and cut him off completely if we should choose to have another... -
ARCHIVED Not High Results?
Ursa Major replied to Peta's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Peta, since your son obviously has the celiac disease genes, and he has the symptoms, plus relatives with celiac disease, in my mind there is not doubt he has it. The blood tests are very unreliable, and catch only about 50% of celiac disease cases. And you can have celiac disease, even if the biopsy is negative. A positive biopsy will definitely diagnose...
