  1. Dave, as gfp said, you NEED to get past the ten-day-mark. It is likely that the withdrawal symptoms will go away after two weeks. Imagine, you gave up four days before you would have been okay! Try doing it one day at a time. Every morning you tell yourself, "Today I will not eat any gluten!" Don't even look at the long run, it is just too daunting. ...
  2. Infertility (in men as well) is a VERY common symptom of celiac disease. There are doctors that test routinely for celiac disease if somebody can't conceive (too few doctors understand about that, though). Miscarriages are very common as well, I had eight of those (no problems conceiving, though). Unfortunately, with all the many symptoms of celiac disease...
  3. Suz, I had fibromyalgia most of my life (also now going away with avoiding foods I am intolerant to), and for almost all of my marriage I've had to hear that I am just lazy, and don't want to do things for my husband because I don't love him enough. He never believed me that I am sick and have no energy. And it isn't possible in my house to be safe, as...
  4. Your doctor sounds like one of those many doctors who is completely clueless about celiac disease. Whether your liver function is okay or not is irrelevant when it comes to celiac disease testing. I used to get very swollen feet and ankles (even though I hardly used any salt then, which likely caused me to be deficient in iodine). When I cut out gluten...
  5. I used to get terrible skin problems, being itchy all over, but especially on my scalp. My head is rarely itchy now that I use gluten-free shampoo and conditioner (Dove). It used to be so bad that I'd scratch myself bloody! Also, if you use soap that contains gluten, you will definitely ingest some (you wash your hands with it.......and then eat with them...
  6. Congratulations on your first not only edible, but delicious chocolate cake! You must be very pleased. I don't see why you couldn't post the recipe here.
  7. Good for you, Geoff, for doing so well despite not feeling so great. I loved looking through the pictures, it sure looks challenging and like everybody was having a good time!
  8. Normal values depend on the lab that was used. Not all of them use the same values for normal range. 12.6 <10 would mean that your result is 12.6, and the normal range is below 10. So, 12.6 would be positive.
  9. I take the Genestra Brand. It's guaranteed not to contain any common allergens, including dairy, gluten and maltodextrin. All the other brands either contained dairy or maltodextrin. It's the only one that didn't give me a negative reaction.
  10. Because of malabsorption, usually people with celiac disease who had been sick for quite a while are very deficient in some essential nutrients. It would be a good idea for your wife to be tested for levels of ferritin, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, vitamin K and vitamin B12. For instance a lack of vitamin D all in itself can cause depression! And I think...
  11. Ouch, your scores are through the roof. Weight gain has nothing to do with how much fat you absorb. In fact, a diet fairly high in the right, healthy fats (like coconut oil) will help you lose weight. It's the carbohydrates that are the culprit in weight gain. You definitely need to eliminate all egg right now. And I mean from every source. So, no, putting...
  12. I am very sorry you lost your dad, and that you had to be the one who found him. I understand about the unreal feeling. It will take a while to truly register that your dad is gone. My dad died of liver cancer in 1997, and for years I would actually walk over to the phone on his birthday, thinking, "I need to call Papa, it's his birthday", only to realize...
  13. It sounds suspiciously like a wheat allergy (on top of gluten intolerance) to me. You should completely stay away from wheat, seriously. Your son needs to look after his own laundry, move out or find a new job. HIS job is making YOU sick! That is a ridiculous situation and can't go on.
  14. Please let us know if removing dairy from your diet will be helpful in alleviating your symptoms. I am glad you aren't listening to the second GI. Her advice shows complete ignorance. What would be the point of making yourself really sick again? I hope you'll feel much better soon!
  15. You have to ship your samples back by overnight courier. It won't be cheap, but necessary. Personally, I wouldn't care if any doctor approves of it. I am thinking of having my youngest daughter tested by Enterolab some time this year (when I can afford it). And since MDs are so ignorant about celiac disease anyway, I'd either take her to my naturopathic...
  16. Your microscopic fat score shows that you DO have intestinal damage, because you have malabsorption. Also, your immune system is reacting to gluten, your scores are obviously positive for gluten intolerance (as well as dairy intolerance). So, you need to eliminate gluten and casein for life, as simple as that. Also, you could still have celiac disease...
  17. GI no. 2 wants to do another endoscopy to rule out celiac disease, and tells you to eat whatever you want? You already have a firm diagnosis of celiac disease, and should NEVER eat gluten again. If it was me, that second GI would never see me again, she doesn't know what the heck she is doing. Have you eliminated dairy from your diet? If your villi are...
  18. What is that, Steve?
  19. What you do is your choice, nobody can make it for you. But yes, some members here have been denied health and/or life insurance because of an official celiac disease diagnosis. If you feel that your positive blood work and your diet response to the gluten-free diet is good enough to be convinced to stay away from gluten for the rest of your life, the...
  20. Thanks Jenny, it was me who said that. So, the name 'triticale' for the hybrid of wheat and rye makes perfect sense. And of course, it needs to be avoided as well.
  21. Sarah, three weeks on gluten is not likely going to result in positive blood work, it would have to be more like four to six months. I doubt you'd want to do that! In children that young the tests are extremely unreliable anyway, the best test is the gluten trial. Obviously, you know the answer already. I have read about lots of kids who are the sweetest...
  22. Thanks for providing the link to this website, I also just ordered the DVD! I really need it to clue people in my family in, they think I am overreacting. Plus, my 15-year old daughter keeps saying when I tell her I believe she needs to be gluten-free, "Mom, I believe you that I might be gluten intolerant, so what, I don't care, I refuse to give up bread...
  23. Those are great pictures, Lisa! Watching them and taking those shots must have been a lot of fun.
  24. Apology accepted, it was just a misunderstanding, no hard feelings here.
  25. Nancy, I have five children, four daughters, 27, 25 (26 in June, 15 months younger than the oldest), 21 and 15, and one son, 24 next month. As you can see, between the two youngest girls there is a six-year gap. Not by choice, I had three miscarriages before I had her, and three after (and she should have been a twin, I miscarried one). Now I know that...
