  1. Be aware that the rice cooker for the microwave is plastic. Yes, I know they say that it is microwave-safe--but that just means that it is safe for the plastic, . The plastic does break down from the microwaves and leaches chemicals into your food. You CAN make rice in the microwave--but the electric rice cookers are just as quick, and very convenient...
  2. Are you kidding? If you have dogs, you aren't alone! Dogs are people, too, ya know! So are cats--whe I got my first apartment, I got a cat BEFORE I bought any furniture! Most of the dogs and cats I know are much better company than some of the humans I know.... But I know what you mean--don't worry, okay? If you want to be, than...
  3. We gave all our babies flaked broiled salmon as their first "real food." It's soft, very digestible, and extremely nutritious. Tilapia is good, too, but you might want to avoid tuna as it is high in mercury. Rice pasta is something you can make for the whole family that your baby can eat. Be careful of lunch meat turkey, some brands to contain gluten...
  4. That sounds lovely (sigh),,,my house is a sea of play-doh, broken crayons, capless markers, and dozens of pictures of princesses and rainbows (form the 5-year-old), dragons and monsters (the 8-year-old), crayoned football posters (the 11-year-old), fingerprints on walls and noseprints on windows (all of them), various stains on the family room carpet (juice...
  5. One more good laugh for you, Susan: Rachelville (AP) - A seven-year-old boy was at the center of a Rachelville courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations...
  6. Penguin's RANCH CHICKEN STRIPS 2-4 bonless skinless chicken breasts, cut into strips 1 c. mashed potato flakes (Penguin uses idahoan premium, I use Potato Buds) 1/2 c. parmesan cheese* 1-2 eggs, beaten (you can get away with only one egg with 2 breasts) 4 tbsp melted butter (or margerine) HV Ranch mock up: 3 tbsp Buttermilk powder* (found with...
  7. DingoWorld is adjacent to Rachelville, and there are Rinne-land Hotels (or hostels?) sprinkled throughout both places, all with ironed pillowcases.
  8. Hmmm. We were all sure that my MIL was dying a couple of weeks ago. She was sent to the hospital with dehydration, and I swear they (the hospital) tried to do her in. They wouldn't let her drink tea, coffee, or soup (she only likes hot liquids), and said that she had trouble swallowing , so they tried to make her eat hospital food (bad enough to start...
  9. Then he is a total slimebooger and should be flushed down the toilet, too. You can tell him I said so, if you ever run into him again.
  10. I have a friend who is a physiatrist working at a pain management clinic. I'm sure they see a ton of fibromyalgia patients--and I don't think she knows about the link between gluten and fibromyalgia. She is a very bright and caring person, and I thought if I could provide her with 1) relevant links and 2) YOUR stories of your fibromyalgia symptoms alleviated...
  11. Oh, Andrea, I'm so sorry. If it's any comfort, I lost a dear friend to Multiple Myeloma (a nasty cancer),a nd at the end, her kidneys shut down, which, the way the nurse explained it to me, was a GOOD thing, as she basically slept most of the time and eventually went into a sort of coma before passing--NO PAIN. Whatever might have been painful (with...
  12. Just a heads-up here--I read on some of the other threads that some of the members of this board have been denied life insurance and HEALTH CARE COVERAGE after being diagnosed as celiac. We all know how deeply flawed our health care system is. Unless you really think you will learn about a diagnosis other than celiac from an endoscopy, or if you don't...
  13. Wow--HUGS. CALMNESS, and STRENGTH (the strength to be calm?) about the MIL situation. The unwanted sales pitch--oh, that is SO annoying. I got the same thing from a colleague after my shoulder injury. He called under the pretext of asking how I am, expressing concern, blah blah blah, and then wanted me to buy several hundred dollars of his wife's Nikken...
  14. If one of them had celiac and NOT you, would you say it is their problem and they should deal with it and not be a burden on the rest of the family? I hope not. YOU ARE A FAMILY. YOU ARE NOT THEIR SERVANT. Continued ingestion of gluten for a celiac is like continually ingesting small amounts of arsenic--it will lead to all kinds of horrible complications...
  15. If you really feel you must get a flu shot, please make sure you ask for one that is not preserved with thimerosal, which is 50% mercury--it crosses the placenta AND the blood-brain barrier. Most MD's are NOT aware of the dangers this poses to to the fetus. The thimerosal-free flu shot comes in individual ampules, so it WILL be more expensive. If you...
  16. About the dry eyes and the film--I have this, too! And my eyes used to be supersuper sensitive, and teared up like mad at the slightest excuse. Except, I've noticed when I forget to put moisturizer around my eyes--then I DON'T have the film. Apparently, for me, the film is caused by the moisturizer getting in my eyes. But then when I don't use the moisturizer...
  17. Me, too!!! I had Reese's Peanut Buttter Cups, Butterfinger's, and Baby RUths (each on different days), and each time I got cramps and minor D.
  18. I cut fresh raw tilapia into strips and then follow the ranch chicken recipe. You can use any fish you like.
  19. I'm not sure this can help your situation, but the one time I was depressed, my doctor switched me form Synthroid to Levothroid (exact same dosage!), saying that many of her patients did not do well on Synthroid. I then felt well enough to go first for walks and then for jogs, and that helped ENORMOUSLY. The odd thing, though, is that after that doctor...
  20. I bet it would work if you shred the potatoes, either with a food processor, or a hand-held grater!
  21. No fresh gluten-free breads or gluten-free cereals here , but they did have the rice pasta and Sharon's sorbet. Where in the Chicago area is Trader Joe's? (My folks still live in the Northern suburbs.)
  22. I make it at least once a week,a nd make fish sticks out of it, too.
  23. That gingersnap crust looks great! My hubby is allergic to tree nuts, but can eat almonds--do you think almonds would work?
  24. YUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUM What size bag of tater tots? My grocery carries a couple of different sizes.
