  1. I am pregnant too and my triple screen came back positive (1:180) for DS - I went ahead and did the amnio and it came back ok though. I too thought it might be from the celiac - I was just dx in May and got pregnant in Sept. before my intestines could heal. I had all kinds of wierd blood tests prior to my dx that were a result of the celiac, so why not...
  2. I am going to SEattle in April (have never been) and will be staying near the Pike Place market. I will not have a car. Can anyone recommend any restaurants (breakfast/lunch/dinner) within walking distance (or is there some good public transportation)? Thanks!
  3. How do you know if you have reflux? My GI said that I had it from my endoscopies (2), but I don't feel any burning or pain in my throat - the only pain like that that I have is a sharp stabbing pain on my left side under my ribcage. Comes and goes periodically - not after eating or anything related to food that I can tell. Would the apple cider vinegar...

    ARCHIVED Taxes

You can deduct the difference (like jayhawkmom said) between the regular price of an item and the gluten-free alternative, but only if the total difference along with all your other eligible oiut of pocket medical expenses exceeds 7.5% of AGI. Plus, you must keep all receipts to prove what you have spent. It is very hard to get your medical expenses to exceed...
  5. something that most dr's won't tell you and probably don't know is that you need to check your medications (call the manufacturer if need be), lipstick/chapstick, and maybe even shampoos/hair products and soaps/lotions (some people don't do this, but basically anything that can ever find it's way into your mouth - I eat/prepare foods with my hands a lot so...
  6. I went to 10 different dr's in ATL before I finally went to a GI last year and he immediately dx me with celiac (blood tests and endoscopy). His name is Eric Steinberg and he is near Northside Hospital. He has several patients with celiac, although he admits to not being an expert on it (I know more than he does now about the "healing" and diet), but he...
  7. I like to eat Bob's Red Mill mighty hot tasty cereal (or something like that - it is gluten-free and is made with brown rice and buckwheat I think) and I cook it with craisins or dried appricots and then add cinnamon and applesauce (applesauce instead of milk). It is very good. Chocolatelover - I think people recommend soy yogurt if yoiu can't tolerate...
  8. The prairie bread and sundried tomato bread are very good (not "light" though!) and like all other gluten-free breads, must be toasted and kept frozen. I don't like their pizza crust - tasted like cardboard - had to throw it out, but I buy the chebe mix there and use that to make pizza crust - works very well. In my store that is in the cake mix, other...
  9. I am curious about this - I have sharp pains in my lower left side and also stabbing pains (not burning or the rock feeling that you all are talking about) in my chest just under my rib cage. The GI said my esophogus was inflamed (have had 2 endoscopies recently) and told me to try nexium, but I had heard that once you start taking it, it is hard to stop...
  10. I think it's a great idea and would definitely use it (and add all my places I eat at - I eat out quite often still and am usually not glutened) I don't know anything about the "rules", etc. though, but if you do it I would tell my support groups here in ATL and I"m sure others would use it/contribute.
  11. cassidy - the genetic test that we had on our 2 year old daughter (through Enterolab) was a cheek swab (saliva). I'm not really sure if there is a blood test per se that detects the genetic part - I'm just wondering about all that. I would love to not have to fork out the money for Enterolab again for this baby, so was hoping they could test for it in the...

I use dove right now - bought Pantene b/c I had heard it was gluten-free and there wasn't anything suspicious on the ingredient list but I got horrible bumps all over my head and neck near my hair line - they went away when I switched to Dove so I'll never use Pantene again!
  13. very wierd - I wondered what kind of legitimate company would call themselves Lame Advertisement!
  14. I had very mild depression (nothing serious, just lousy moods due to low thyroid) before dx, but after my celiac dx in May I was severely depressed and was considering medication, but finding this board and the support groups here helped tremendously. Also, everyone I talked to that has celiac said you have to allow yourself time to grieve, which is so true...
  15. I totally understand - maybe it was your job and always touching gluten (it's bound to find a way into your mouth), but have you tried giving up coffee, or switching to decaf? I found that coffee is one of the things that have been giving me D - I switched to decaf (only drink it about once every 2-3 weeks anyway) and no problem. I've heard a lot of people...
  16. Oh yes, I've been gluten-free for 8 months and just went to a new Super Walmart by us b/c I heard that they label things gluten-free (their brand anyway) and I could not find anything with a gluten-free on it so I started crying. But then I got to the cereal aisle and saw they had all the new Disney cereals that are gluten-free (Dora, Little Einsteins and...
  17. I was dx with celiac last year, and have had our 2 yr old genetically tested since then (she has one gene) and am pregnant again. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to have the genetic test done on my newborn in the hospital when they do all those other tests? It's a long shot I know, but I would love to know right away if I even have to...
  18. Dee, I have to agree with gfp that if you are still baking with regular flours/mixes then that is much more risky than any of your utensils. I love to bake too, and that was my biggest thing to overcome was how to bake still for other people, but I've learned how to bake gluten-free and everyone loves everything I make (the only way they know it's gluten...
  19. I love Lundberg Farm's gluten free risottos (they have several flavors and are in the grocery store with the other rice packages). I also love Pirates Booty white cheddar popcorn!
  20. It could be the dairy - that is what dairy does to me, but honestly, 4 days is not long enough to expect a change. My symptoms didn't go away (including the D) until 6 months. At my 6 month biopsy checkup my intestines were stilled damaged, so it took more than 6 months for them to heal. Giving up most dairy did help, but I had never had headaches until...
  21. I am the only one gluten-free in my house (have a 2 year old daughter and husband who still eat gluten), but I am still fairly new (just 9 months now). I got rid of ALL gluten flours and mixes - too much "stuff" flying in the air with that. We do have "normal" bread for my husband and child, and they eat some other (mostly frozen) gluten stuff as well as...
  22. I second the Bell and Evans gluten-free chicken nuggets - they are the best (much better than the other brand in my opinion) Make sure you get the gluten-free ones though - I think they make both kinds. If you want to make your own, I just dip the chicken chunks/strips in dijon mustard (or something else if you prefer) and roll in crushed gluten-free...
  23. you will find all kinds of stories here - many have had kids just fine and many, unfortunately, have problems. My story: I suspect I've had celiac since age 12 but never dx - about 4 years ago started trying to get pregnant (before I ever heard of celiac) and went through different fertility drugs, was told I had insulin resistance and PCOS and a host of...
  24. Burts Bees are gluten-free (the shimmering stick kind - not sure if they all are) and I know some of the Clinique are gluten-free but some contain gluten. It is not obvious in the ingredient list since they do not have to follow the FDA rules. Somewhere on this board someone posted which Clinique lipsticks were gluten-free at one point - try doing a search...
  25. I too would love this banana peanutbutter muffin recipe - can you post it?
