  1. Yes. I did some research on this when I was dx in May and found that celiacs are usually deficient in B12 and folic acid (along with iron, Vit D, and calcium, to mention just a few). I knew that I was anemic and my calcium and Vit. D levels had been low for some time, so I was already supplementing those and was also taking a multivitiamin, but with my...
  2. Just curious, why did she say they don't put people on Armour anymore? I just wonder why, other than the fact that the pharmacy companies are controlling drs now
  3. Thanks so much - I will check these sites out. Funny my very first endocrynologist 5 years ago (when I started trying to figure out all my problems) is on this top dr. list, although he is "no longer listed". I went to him b/c I heard he was the best in Atlanta, but he could never figure out what was wrong with me and never dx my hypothyroid - after about...
  4. jlynn - I started out just eating fresh fruits and veggies and meat and rice/potatoes (don't forget sweet potatoes - I eat a lot of those now, and spaghetti squash - yum!), but after about a month of that and severe depression b/c of it I added some gluten free packaged food like Envirokidz cereal bars and Pamela's pancake mix and gluten-free pasta. I...
  5. well, I sure wouldn't be opposed to finding a new dr! I like my endo, but the staff drives me crazy. Do you know if Armour is safe while pregnant/breastfeeding? I will definitely ask my dr. about it when I go back in a few weeks, and I'll read up on these sites, and if she's not open to the "natural" meds then I'll start searching for a dr. that is. ...
  6. don't get discouraged - it took me 6 months before the D went away, and I'm still having some problems (been 8 months gluten-free now). Of course, I'm pregnant again so it's hard to tell what it just pregnancy symptoms and what is celiac related. I"ve heard it may take up to 2 years before you really start to feel better, so give it time. And I agree...
  7. avocado and salt, or hummus and carrots. I also like to spread hummus and/or avocado on tortillas (you could sprinkle some salt on too) and I add tomatoes, but you could add whatever you like.
  8. I was on Levoxyl but am now on Synthroid (not sure why my endo switched me). I started with 50 mcg but now am alternating between 150 synthroid and 175 each day. I go back in a few weeks - what should I ask my endo about? I'm kind of confused about all of this stuff. My hypo started when I got pregnant 2 plus years ago and I've been on meds (synthroid...
  9. I was hypothyroid for a few years before my celiac dx, and then shortly after going gluten-free I become hyper and developed a goiter and was then dx with hashimotos (not sure what the difference is) and now am hypo again (well, right now it's under control, but I seem to switch back and forth). I'm pregnant now so everything's all over the place
  10. I buy my rice flour (have only found white and sweet rice flour), tapioca starch, and potato starch at the asian market, and also buy huge bags of rice, but that is about all (sometimes coconut milk). I don't know what brands - just pick up whatever they have. If there is an ingredient list, it is usually in english also (most things don't have ingredients...
  11. I too love Van's - I put them in the toaster oven at 350 for about 3-4 min. (flip after 1-2 min.) and they aren't like cardboard. I tried Trader Joe's but didn't like them - not much flavor.
  12. My favorite is the Really Great Food Co. also, but b/c I can't find it here and shipping is so expensive, I usually use Pamela's (not as fluffy though). I order Pamela's in bulk from amazon - very cheap! Lonewolf, funny you mention the french toast - I orderd the energ light tapioca bread from amazon and since it comes in a box with 6 loaves, I made french...
  13. I made the 7 layer dip for lunch yesterday for myself and ate half of it myself! (I'm pregnant, so that's my excuse!). Very good and so simple.
  14. I'm curious about this too (not necessarily the stress trigger but any trigger) - I've had some symptoms since age 12 (dizzyness and passing out), which got progressively worse (and new symptoms added) as I went to college and graduated. Then, after I had a baby 2 years ago, my intestinal problems started (those were never a part of my symptoms), so I'm...
  15. I had been told that maltodextrin (or just dextrin) are not safe in lotions, cosmetics, hair products, etc. b/c they don't have the same laws - is this true? I know it is safe for food, so figured it would be safe for everything else. So confusing!
  16. I love the search index (go to www.icecream.com/flavorfinder and go to the flavor finder at bottom left and search by ingredient (gluten free is an option!).
  17. Yes, I just started getting the large painful acne on my chin, and lots of little bumps on my chest/back/neck recently, but now that you mention the pill, it was around the time that I stopped taking it and then immediately became pregnant, so it's probably a hormone thing and not a gluten thing (I've been gluten-free for 8 months and am only 4 months pregnant...
  18. I've had elevated liver enzymes for the past 5-6 years prior to my dx - they thought all kinds of things were wrong with me and did all kinds of tests (never thought of celiac though) until I finally went to a GI (my 10th or 11th dr.) and he dx me with celiac. After 6 months on the diet, my enzymes are finally normal, so yes, I think there is definitely...
  19. I eat a lot of other grains like quinoa and rice and risotto (homemade) and also eat a lot of beans and lentils. The corn tortillas and rice cakes are cheap and good for "sandwhiches". I really don't care much for the gluten-free breads, so I've learned to make "sandwhiches" without bread (just wrap a slice of turkey around a stick of cheese, or a pickle...
  20. Question - per your research and what your dr. said, does that mean that candida will do the same damage to your intestines as gluten for a celiac (i.e., all "yeasty" foods)? If so, then how long do you have to be on the candida diet? Or is that something you have to do for life like the gluten-free diet? I"m just curious b/c I"ve been gluten-free for...
  21. Well, this is not what you want to hear, but it is my story - stop trying! Seriously, as Carla said, stressing about it will make it never work. We tried for about 2 years, did the clomid and some other drug can't remember the name, then finally gave up and decided we could live together just the 2 of us and maybe get a dog then bam! very next month...
  22. Anyone use the new Pantene Ice? I thought Pantene was gluten-free, so bought a bottle of shampoo and conditioner and have had wierd little pimple type things all over my neck and scalp since using it. Anyone else have anything like this?
  23. Has anyone experienced intestinal problems from Kefir? I just started drinking Kefir (raspberry) for the first time last week and was having a lot of gas (the loud kind, not the smelly kind). I noticed that it was on the days that I drank the Kefir (probably only about 4 oz each time). Just wondering if anyone else has had wierd side effects from this...
  24. I started getting headaches (never had them before) almost every day since going gluten-free 8 months ago (still getting them!), but I also developed a goiter and Hashimotos thyroiditis when I went gluten-free, so not sure if the headaches could be from that. Any way, the headaches are the only new symptom I've developed (although some of my old ones still...
  25. I've been gluten-free for almost 8 months (with many mistakes I'm sure), and I've recently gone from my usual 7-10 bms per day (mostly D) to now just 2 or 3, and like yours, they are HUGE and usually hard (not sure if that's considered constipation if I still am going every day?). Sometimes they are very painful (like having a baby - even clogged up the...
