  1. I"m sure that's a hard thing to go through. I know how expensive the gluten-free foods and even the fresh naturally gluten-free foods are, so I bet that makes it difficult to think about putting the whole family on the diet. Also, the diet is HARD. In the newspaper article I read it was described as the most difficult diet one can have. Asking an adult...
  2. Yeah, I'm a teacher and I was at work until 10PM working on editing the video announcements I do every week. But the brain fog (I'd been glutened the day b4) made EVERYTHING go slower. But I didn't feel that guilty about it because the other teacher who works on it with me kept forgetting wires and things too! ALSO, I have left hand dumbness. Often without...
  3. Amy's Soup. I'd read about people reacting to it, but I had already bought it and some people are allergic to ingredients I am ok with. So I tried some one day and I was fine. Ate the rest the next day (potato leek?)yum. Then I had the tomato kind. I guess I'm just glad I get off work at 3, because I can go home and be glutenly grouchily greenily grumbly...
  4. Yesterday my mom called me to tell me that Katie Couric was having a story on celiac! My stepdad told her he'd seen it. (I was impressed he recognized it as my deal.) So I watched it on TV and then I watched it again on cbs.com. It was great to see my "deal" get some recognition. I liked the little animation they showed of your body inside. I emailed a...
  5. I feel ya! I've gotten glutened twice this week from things on gluten free lists: Amy's soup and gummy lifesavers. Last night I was supposed to go bowling and I was about to leave and I felt that familiar bloating and other feelings. So I called and told my friend I was going to be late, but I still went, because I knew I'd feel bad at home AND I'd feel...
  6. COOL VIDEO!!!!!! Donuts and gluten-containing food are not tempting to me. I just get a "who cares" attitude at times and decide to cheat for the TEXTURE of it. It's not the food, it's the TEXTURE. I don't plan to do this ongoing. It's just something that I have done in my first year of adjustment and I thought I was the perfect one to reply, because...
  7. If you feel like you've regressed on the evolutionary scale...back to hunter and gatherer. If your boyfriend ordered the famous pancake-bigger-than your head and when the waitress finds out you can't have any says to you, Boy is he a jerk! If you've tipped a waitress/waiter who accommodated you successfully almost as much as the check total If you...
  8. Hmmm. Did I see Butterfinger on a gluten-free list? I gotta investigate. Bought 2 at the store just in case. Lady at work is annoyed I'm thin and said, yeah, she (me)can't eat bread. I'm like, yeah, but that's ok because now I can eat bacon, donuts, bagels (gluten-free), ice cream, potato chips/dip and steak--all things I avoided when I was "normal" because...
  9. Hmmm. Going to El Torito tonight. Haven't been there since going "against the grain" or "wheatless". I like refried beans, rice, and chips and guacamole. Will probably get tamales or tacos with corn tortillas. I'm thinking cross contamination will be the big scare factor here. Only one way to find out. The scariest part is going dancing afterward...
  10. One word: Enchiladas! I had steak enchiladas and they were muy bien! I had no problemas getting my dance on afterward, either! I ordered normally but cautioned the waiter about being allergic to wheat and later he made a joke about how did I enjoy the flour tortillas. haha Whatever. It was cool. I defrosted berry pancakes for breakfast today (yum) and...
  11. Signed up to bring an appetizer for a work luncheon. Wanted to bring cheese and sausage, but the sausage was not looking like it was going to be allowable for me. SO, I glanced over and saw some HUMMUS and realized I haven't had that in YEARS. So, I bought some bell peppers and there we go! Sliced red, green, and yellow bell peppers with black olives and...
  12. The luncheon at work was easy. I ate fruit, a tamale, spanish rice,-- and the peppers with hummus that I brought. Not bad. The only thing that looked yummy that I couldn't have was the soup someone made and the brownies someone made. Not for me! Because I'm SSSSSPECIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At least I happened upon the gluten-free brand name candy...
  13. Girls nite out dancing last night and the band was really cool. Now that my hair is long (had short hair a la Charlize and Dixie Chicks in my 20s and decided to grow it last Xmas when I turned 30) it's hot on the dance floor! I'm glad celiac hasn't inhibited my hair's ability to grow fast! I had one drink, a Jack Daniel's with Coke. But, I got tired...
  14. Got my order from celiac specialties. Xantham gum, graham cracker crumbs (I want to make a pie), powdered donuts, pumpernickel bread (first time I ordered this), and Dr.Schar's crackers (first time). The pumpernickel is really good. Not as strong of a flavor as I remember the real kind from my gluten full days, but pretty good straight out of the bag...
  15. This is the best list I've found by that Melonie Katz lady. She's a really well informed celiac. Try the link: www.glutenfreeforum.com/lofiversion/index.php/t9925.html or just google "melonie katz candy list"
  16. Instant Grits. Just add hot water. Pretty good and pretty convenient. For milk, you can do fruit smoothy mixes. I get them at the 99 cent store.
  17. Hi Yep, I agree it's EXPENSIVE. I used to spend $30 a week and now it's about $85 a week. haha Not just because of the gluten-free products (pricey), but because I am trying to build a foundation of products used in gluten-free recipes (I cook often) that I never needed in regular recipes. IE. guar gum, saffron, special flours, etc. HOWEVER, I...
  18. I KNOW they are affecting me- notice I wrote "a few less villi" in reference to intestinal damage?? I get glutened about twice a month UNintentionally, so I figure why not throw in a few enjoyable ones? Forgive me if I wanted to reply to share the fact that I have had the same experience. HOW AWFUL OF ME- on a SUPPORT BOARD???? When I said I don't "get...
  19. Got my plane ticket 4 the holidays. I got lucky last year and it was in the 40 degree range in Chicago area last Xmas! Probably won't get so lucky this year. Last year I was BRAND new to celiac and this is how I coped on my 10 day trip: There are LOTS of celiacs over there (as are there lots of Norske's and other Scandinavian peeps- I read somewhere that...
  20. [Turned on some music and got cookin! Pryed open fresh clams to make clam chowder and put the rest in with mussels and big fat shrimp to make Spanish Paella with the saffron rice. mmmmmmm I took a pic of it, even. Maybe it will motivate me to make it again soon. I bought a can of chili and a can of pork and beans at the store since I'd seen them on...
  21. When I was buying donuts for my students, the woman gave me a free one (since I was a new customer) and I ate it and I had NO REACTION. I think they used different flour to make donuts because I remember my mom making them when I was little and the flour seemed SO fine (reminds me of gluten-free flours). I cheat with donuts once in a while, since they...
  22. Danielle's mix is REALLY good, but I threw the rest out last time because it made my stomach HUGELY bloated. It was PAINFUL. I don't know why. Are you from teh midwest? That sounds like the frosting my grandma makes. Not my favorite, tho. She loves it.
  23. I LOVE THOSE TOO!!!!!!!! My friend and I were on a road trip and she tried some, then wanted more, but I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
  24. I might try these recipes you guys put up. But I do really enjoy my ENER-G frozen pizza shells. Easy preparation and less of a mess. They are REALLY good. I wonder if I'm just used to them and yours are even better?????
  25. I USE "BETTER THAN CREAM CHEESE" a soy product that is great for baking. I get it at Trader Joe's or Ralph's grocery store here (Kroger in other parts of the US).
