ARCHIVED Anyone Have A Challenging Family Member?
brendygirl replied to a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Your mom doesn't have a disorder. I'm in your same situation, except my mom seems milder-thank goodness! Perhaps b/c she has a life partner and two other kids. But, she's in a domestic violence situation, so it's not wonderful. Have you read the longitudinal study they published on children of divorce? They followed these kids for 25 years and found EXACTLY... -

ARCHIVED Am I Being Unreasonable, Or Is He?
brendygirl replied to emcmaster's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Funny! This is the same situation that happens in a storybook I read to my class. It's an OLD, worn book that I got from a discard pile, but it's awesome! It's about the Baybeebibi Bird. It moves to a zoo at night and sings beebibobbee all night long because it's nocturnal and the other animals get mad that they can't sleep. So when the sun comes up and... -
ARCHIVED What Was Your Favorite Christmas Gift?
brendygirl replied to Lisa's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I got boots, too! I was looking for some last year and never got any, so my mom got me some this year! They are wild! They have fur at the top and chains with charms around the ankle. They are fun, tho! My favorite gifts would be the stamp my brother gave me of my name in Chinese and the amethyst, diamond, and citrine ring my grandma got me (she got matching... -
More Celiac Antics From The Trip
brendygirl posted a blog entry in Gluten Free Breeze (formerly Brendygirl) Blog
Made my first gallavant to the GIANT liquor Mart in the small town my mom lives in. I joyfully discovered the New Grist in the back and paid for it while the 'rents shopped for cheapo wine for the New Year. As I stood waiting, a woman with a MULLET approaches me and gabs on and on about the coupon she just got to get a rebate on the giant bottle of the... -

Best Material Presents I've Received: Antibacterial gel Handmade greeting card sets Jewelry cup with the names of my students cross-stitched inside the plastic sleeve A stamp with my name in Chinese Plane tickets Overpriced video of me swimming with dolphins that I'd never have bought myself Calendars Matching rings: my mom, my aunt and I got from... -
I'm sure I'm not the perfect gift giver, and I don't want to seem ungracious, because these gifts give me great stories to tell and I've often regifted them to people who hopefully appreciated them or could use them. I'm sure everyone meant well upon giving them...almost everyone. I really do crack myself up when I recount them. Here they are in the order...

Eating Out Once A Day
brendygirl posted a blog entry in Gluten Free Breeze (formerly Brendygirl) Blog
Since I was out of town with family for two weeks, I ate out once a day, on average. I was kinda excited to visit Steak N Shake and Famous Dave's, Carnivale, and Lou Malnati's Pizza, none of which are available in California where I am. Steak N Shake. Good bunless burger. Not allowed to eat the fries, fryers not designated. GREAT new Strawberry Banana... -
Celiac Challenges Chicago

I chomped pizza, guzzled beer, savored chocolate fondue, crunched Emeril's popcorn candy bundt cake, sipped Tom & Jerry's, and slurped yogurt shakes. Yeah, Ba-Bay! I think I gained a few pounds! My clothes aren't loose! There's actually a GOOD side to my stepdad having OCD...I got my own miniature butter for my stay and they only use squeezable jelly... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Cornbread Recipe
brendygirl replied to angel42's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
It could even have been cross contamination that got ya at Thanksgiving. Anyway, I think ENER-G makes a corn muffin mix. You could give it to her that way she could just dump everything in. However, some people on here even say bakeware needs to be gluten-free, too. I only have one person whom I let prepare me food when I'm not in the kitchen watching... -
My Grandma made this for Christmas. It was BEAUTIFUL. She is kind of martha stuart-esque and she said some of the chocolate candy or something was melting and making streaks of chocolate, but she just went with it and it looked cool, plus she put it on a cake pedistal and it was the centerpiece. Nobody had ever seen anything soo unique. It was quite a...

I've had success using it. I just add a pinch since I'm usually quickly throwing everything in!

ARCHIVED I Got A Zojiruchi!
brendygirl replied to KrisT's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I can only have a little of the prefabricated gluten-free products without getting bloated, nauseous, etc. I ate an entire gluten-free hot dog bun one time and UGH! But I read in the magazine Living Without, that since celiacs have a hard time absorbing the nutrients we eat that we should really try to eat fortified foods like gluten-free breads. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Make Gluten Free Cornflakes?
brendygirl replied to kbabe1968's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
MY FAVORITE CEREAL is Nature's Path Organic Cornflakes. I think Barbara's makes a good one, too. I love to put my own raisins or dried cranberries or fresh strawberries in it. -
I just ate there yesterday while my bro and I were sightseeing in chicago. I had a club salad and I substituted spinach instead of plain lettuce. The preparer used clean gloves, put everything in the salad bowl so it did not touch any surface, and she sliced the deli meat on the plastic top for my salad. I think it's AWESOME to actually get to WATCH...

It was really cool to eat at a pizza joint while visiting my bro in Chi-town. The "crust" is made of flattened out sausage. The sauce and toppings were really great, but there was too much cheese and too much sausage for me. I enjoyed it and will eat it again when I visit, but I probably won't order it to be shipped to California for me.

Funny, I don't think fear is necessarily a negative feeling. -
I really enjoyed the article. Found a few websites I haven't seen before in there. Great! Thanks!

ARCHIVED Do Visuals (think Wheat) At Restaurants Gross You Out?
brendygirl replied to brendygirl's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
It's really validating reading your replies. Thanks lots! I figured I wasn't the only one after I read that list "You might be a celiac if..." where you've rammed your grocery cart at the cereal aisle. The hair on the back of my neck stands up when I see the bread aisle. I don't go there. Yesterday an adorable little student of mine with pigtails gave... -

Just an "aha!" first---I CAN DRINK WOODCHUCK CIDER at the bar! YIPPEE!!! Plus, Chi-town has LOTS of gluten-free BEERS I plan on trying out for the first time...I'll let ya know how it all goes! These are important for meeting my goal of not talking or explaining about my diet much on the trip so I can try to take a bit of a mental vacation from my disease... -
ARCHIVED Do Visuals (think Wheat) At Restaurants Gross You Out?
brendygirl posted a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
There is a pub near my work that serves good salads but every time I go there I get anxiety when I see vases of real wheat attached to the walls all over for decoration. I am a teacher and had to teach a unit about how wheat is the seed of life. I had to play and listen to an audiotape telling all about how great wheat products are, while watching the students... -
As for popularity...I've been teaching for ten years and have never had a student named Tyler.

Ditto Jenvan. So much for thinking I was atypical in my favorites!

This is so great! On vacation recently a buddy of mine asked if I could have cider on tap and I just said "when in doubt do without", but now I'm happy and I'm gonna try it!
