ARCHIVED Who Knows What Their Genes Are?
Jestgar replied to Rachel--24's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'd also like to add that rarely do companies publish their developmental data. It makes it too easy for other companies to steal and work around the process in order to circumvent the patent. I am totally not surprised that this hasn't been published. -
ARCHIVED Flour Questions For A Newcomer...
Jestgar replied to my2sons's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Here's more information that you already have too much of. This has been collected from a variety of posters. Also, for cookies, try refrigerating them, not smashing them down, and someone suggested using shortening instead of butter. Tips Gluten is the protein in wheat flour that binds the starches together, helps them rise & keeps them from... -
ARCHIVED Carrying On With Your Daily Life When You Feel Like Poo!
Jestgar replied to allison's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I kinda do Cassidy's approach. I have coffee and breakfast in bed every single morning. I plan out my required events (shopping, cooking, etc) so they are spread throughout the week. I do dishes once or twice a week only and use paper plates whenever I can to minimize work (I live alone). I have decided that chocolate is an important food group... -

ARCHIVED The Severe Glutening Incidents Are Scaring The Daylights Out Of Me
Jestgar replied to elaine33's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Elaine, My reactions are in proprtion to how much gluten I eat. It still takes only a very small amount to set me off, but getting cc'd is annoying rather than incapacitating. -
ARCHIVED New Here- I Have Some Questions
Jestgar replied to Ex3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
All those numbers are either just above, or at the high end of normal, which I think suggests there may be a problem, or that may be normal for him.... You might want to consider taking him off gluten -all gluten- for 3 months and during that time monitor his behaviour, eating, weight, etc. Then, after three months introduce gluten again and again monitor... -
ARCHIVED Who Knows What Their Genes Are?
Jestgar replied to Rachel--24's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My guess is that there are a lot of "non-Celiacs" who would never consider taking anything out of their diet to feel better. I kind of think that as human beings we are loathe to give up anything we enjoy until we have been shown how bad it can get if we continue. I have wondered about people's compliance with the diet and how it relates to the severity... -
ARCHIVED Malabsorption
Jestgar replied to Mayster's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Different things are absorbed through different sections of your digestive tract. Aspirin, for example, is absorbed through your stomach. Iron, (calcium?), vitamins D, A, K, and E are absorbed through the upper part of your small intestine, the part that's normally destroyed first by gluten. Your meds may or may not be being absorbed correctly. -
ARCHIVED Who Knows What Their Genes Are?
Jestgar replied to Rachel--24's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Small science input. The HLA nomenclature is crazy. I've given up trying to understand it. Open Original Shared Link I have seen nothing that shows that ONLY your HLA designation is sufficient to make you susceptible to celiac disease. There are studies ongoing looking at the TLRs, more specifically TLR7,8 and 9 and their roles in initiating autoimmune... -

ARCHIVED Can Gluten Really "live" In Plastic Dishes Even When Washed?
Jestgar replied to CantEvenEatRice's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I glutened myself for about a week by using my old, non-stick pasta pot to cook instant mashed potatoes in. I totally advocate the "If it can't be scrubbed, throw it out" mantra. I think the testing for pans was to fry saffron in it, and then clean the pan and try cooking something white. If it turns yellow, you haven't cleaned the pan well enough. ... -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Nodules And Possible Cancer.
Jestgar replied to frenchiemama's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That doesn't sound good. When I had my thyroid removed I asked the surgeon to leave as much of it as possible. He said no problem, cut out everything that looked abnormal and ended up leaving just a little tiny piece. I take synthroid to suppress it, but I don't believe that that little gland only produces thyroxin (or whatever form it is). I have had... -
I think it's a great idea. There is no point in torturing yourself while you're healing. If you have a safe place to hide out for a while - Go For It!! If you are sure about the internet access, talk to the counselor about doing a couple classes on line to keep you in the college swing, and also protect your scholarship. For sure you should have...

Not the same, just related. From wiki: Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana, syn. Cochlearia armoracia) is a perennial plant of the Brassicaceae family, which includes mustard and cabbages. Wasabi (Wasabia japonica, Cochlearia wasabi, or Eutrema japonica) is a member of the cabbage family.

ARCHIVED As News Gets Out...i Have Celiac Disease
Jestgar replied to Lisa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sorry you're having a mopey day. It's ok to feel like you aren't being properly spoiled, you'll find other ways to spoil yourself. Flowers. Manicures. Way expensive haircuts that no-one should be getting. It's only food -
Or... you can send her an extremely detailed last of exactly how to wash every single dish, utensil and pan before she uses it to prepare anything you'd eat. Make sure to explain that she needs to scrub the sink before cleaning all the stuff in it. Explain that she'll need to prepare all your food either before or after everything else because of the...

ARCHIVED As News Gets Out...i Have Celiac Disease
Jestgar replied to Lisa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Kathy Ann, I rarely eat most of those things just because I didn't grow up eating them. I'm sure your corner feels small right now, but I don't feel like my food choices are limited. Just like I'm learning not to feel limited without bread (I don't like the gluten free stuff). I hope that it all gets easier for you over time, maybe once the... -
Please try not to let this be the lesson your son learns from this. Hopefully he will be vindicated in the end, but I think it's important, as humans, that we try to protect each other. Even if sometimes that means we get hassled for it.

ARCHIVED I'm New!
Jestgar replied to Angeleyes's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome Christina! Try searching the recipe forums. There is a huge variety of recipes, most of which your fiance would probably enjoy, and some of which I'm sure he could share with Maximus. Also, feel free to post any questions you have, undoubtedly someone on the board has had a similar experience and will be able to offer a suggestion. -
I can't drink oj on an empty stomach, and tend not to eat fruit when I'm hungry. Maybe you're just sensitive to the fructose and you noticed it more this time because it was all you ate.
