Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity

Yes, this is a real diagnosis, and it effects between 6 to 8% of our population, or approximately 18 million people. Many doctors and patients are unaware that it exists. Most of the papers on this topic have only been published in the last 2-3 years. The British Medical Journal published a case study and review of gluten sensitivity in their November 30, 2012 edition. It is the first case study I have come across in a major medical journal in which a patient self-diagnoses based on information

Celiac Disease And The Innate Immune System

I know that this title sounds very boring (so much so that I doubt that many will read any further than this). But, if you can bear with me, there is some fascinating research involving the role of the innate immune system in reactions to wheat. Trust me!   The role of the immune system is to fight infection. There are two main types of immunity: innate and adaptive. The adaptive immune system is highly evolved and involves antibody formation. The ability of our bodies to “remember” previous

Yes, It Is "safe" To Raise Non Celiac Kids Gluten Free

I’ve realized that I have not written for almost a week and I think I am okay with this. When I started this blog two months ago, I anticipated being able to post about once a week, so I think I am on track. Between working full-time, running, and trying to squeeze in some sleep, the main reason that I have not had time is that I have four small children. I am trying my best to cherish this phase of our family life, as I know that someday I will have four teenagers at once!   None of my kids

Cross Contamination Ocd!

Next week will be my 4th month gluten free and I have only recently discovered how badly my body reacts to any cross contamination.   The first time it happened (and last time! so far..) I had made my dinner completely gluten free. Then I made my daughters lunches for the next morning, some rice pilaf and cut up meat, and while cutting up the meat some of the rice fell onto the counter. I picked it up and threw it away. Later sat down to watch tv and snack on some gluten-free pretzels and the

The Effects Of Gluten On The Brain And Nervous System

Most of the articles about gluten and celiac disease I’ve came across in the media have focused on symptoms related to digestion, such as abdominal pain and bloating after eating gluten, and damage to the small intestine. The bulk of the gluten-related discussions on the celiac forums I’ve perused concern questions and answers regarding the diagnosis of celiac disease and tips for following the gluten free diet. There have been several papers published over the last few years about the neurologi

So Many Different Symptoms I Don't Know What Is Going On

Hi there,   So I need some help if anyone wouldn't mind just taking a sec to give this a read. I have been suffering with problems with my stomach for over two years now. I had been on the waiting list in Ireland with the hospital to put the camera down for a year and a half but have now moved to Scotland so waiting to get tests done here.   The problems started in a part of my life which was very stressful. The symptoms started with just random foods causing my tummy to swell and a feeling

Eosinophilic Esophagitis And Celiac Disease

Eosinophilic Esophagitis, also known as “EE,” is a gastrointestinal disorder that, like Celiac Disease, seems to be increasing in frequency of diagnosis. I first heard of EE when I was in my pediatric residency. I worked with a Pediatric GI specialist who seemed to diagnose all of his infant patients with gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) with EE. While I was learning about EE I had no idea that my dear husband had the very same disease!   My husband was diagnosed with EE in 2009 after having sev

Introducing Gluten To The Baby At Risk For Celiac Disease

Baby Claire is my fourth baby, my “last” baby, and one of the greatest gifts of my life. She is the first baby I’ve had since being diagnosed with Celiac Disease and going gluten free. Because of this, I spent a lot of time during the postpartum period obsessing/fretting/freaking out about if/when I should expose my dear baby to gluten. I felt that I needed to do everything that I could to protect her from developing celiac disease. As usual, my husband was much more laid back and calm about the

Celiac Disease And Pregnancy

Although I am pretty sure that I had Celiac Disease for more than two decades before my diagnosis, I was not diagnosed until after my 3rd child was born. Looking back, my diet during my first 3 pregnancies was a gluten-filled nightmare. I am actually glad that I have no idea how sky-high my celiac antibodies probably were while I was pregnant with my oldest kids.   There has not been a ton of research on celiac disease and pregnancy, but based on the work that has been done, I have learned tha

Here Goes The Cold Water.

I'm Justin, I'm 21 years old, and here I am, it's 1:40 in the morning, I have to be up at 4:45 to get ready for work. Tonight, as happens some nights, I cannot sleep, something unsteady rushes through me. Recently i have lost much weight due to finding out a couple weeks ago through diagnosis that i have celiacs disease and i have cut out gluten all together. All my life i have had problems with my stomach, constant diarrhea, stomach cramping, inability to regain appetite, depression a

Super New With This

PLEASE HELP!.I found this site via word of mouth, and am hoping to find some help. I had my gull (sp?) bladder taken put over a year ago, and about 6 mo after, started having severe digestion and stomach issues. Thousands of dollars later- and numerous test- they've told me my gastric emptying is slower than normal. WHOOOHOOOO!! I am miserable most of the time, bloated and cannot eat. I've very recently decided to try and cut out dairy and gluten, and so far so good. I also get a severe throbbin

Trial 1 With Zglutn: Has Anyone Else Tried This?

Ok for those of you who do not know me I travel a lot. So from time to time I accidentally ingest gluten in one form or another. For instance I found out today that Sodium Starch Glycolate is technically gluten and can cause a full reaction in someone who is as sensitive to it as I am. Thanks to #glutenfreeinsc post I now know what I was getting in my diet that was causing a reaction. So I've decided to start trying different things that can help me either get better faster once I ingest glu

Celiact: A Brief Experiment

I tried Celiact this week. For two and a half days only -- and then I had to stop.   It seemed like a great idea. It has a ton of stuff in it, all of which I was taking separately and some of which I had on order and didn't have access to. I don't have anywhere to buy gluten-free vitamins, since I live in Japan and they aren't very gluten-free-friendly here, and the US bases stock what the servicemen want, and that doesn't seem to be the same stuff I want. So everything comes to me from Ama

Cheese Requiem

I've lost cheese!   I put two and two together and am now on a two-week casein elimination diet. HOLY COW. It's day 4. (On day 2, my rennet arrived in the mail. It was a sad day.)   I just made a dinner for my husband and me that took an army of hands. There was my gluten-free pasta, his gluten-ful pasta, my homemade meatballs with fennel seeds, his homemade meatballs with parmesan.   Why not make gluten-free pasta for both of us? Because it's freakin' expensive and a waste on him.

Mommy, Your Dress Is Too Big.

I have always emphasized eating to be healthy and did not focus on my weight or figure. I am somewhere around a month (?) into my rotational diet and also began pancreatic enzymes and vitamin B recently. My weight began at around 200 6 years back. I lost 30 lbs when I began a supplement program with my chiropractor. My weight had become relatively stable at 170. That seemed an okay weight at 5'7" since I am nearing 50 years old.   The last week I've noticed my face is looking thin. I h

gluten-free Starter Kit Arrived, Rocky Start

Everything I ordered when I went gluten-free arrived in a heap in the mail today. We have a slow boat from the States, and none of this is available locally that I can tell. I got my freeze-dried probiotics, my medical powder for leaky gut, and my gluten-free jerky. I already have digestive enzymes.   The probiotics seemed great. I mean, no problems anyway. But I had a mild reaction to the jerky and a slightly heavier reaction to the medical drink. All are gluten-free, but all also have

Breaking My Fast

I haven't been able to eat normal food without problems for as long as I can remember. The problems used to be worse, but I unconsciously identified some as causing me a problem. I have always been a picky eater.   Today I tried to eat normal food for lunch with digestive enzymes, for the first time. Normally now the problems I have when I eat is that I get a headache, I'm dizzy, I can't think, and I go into a sort of daze. It starts about a half an hour after I eat and lasts for two hours

I Am Trying So Hard Not To Get Giddy This Time

Here I go again. I think I am going through the same old series of happenings that I go through every time I begin a new phase of attempting to heal.   I begin: New supplements : New diet change or : New excercise plan   I begin with enthusiasm. I feel better. I get overwhelmed with the work, but I go on hoping that I can maintain the really better feeling. Finally, I realize the good feeling has been gone for a long time. I don't know what can be done. I lose hope. I disc

Possible Celiac Disease

I had my daughter about 4 months ago. Since than I have had almost IBS symptoms which is diarrhea, constipation, bloody stool, mucus, cramping, bloating, dizzy. I went to a GI dr and they did blood work and I positive for TTGABA and also had a abnormal endo iga screen. It wasn't positive enough to say I have celiac and I know the only way to clearly diagnose is a upper endoscopy. I really don't want to do that so I was wondering if anyone has been in the same situation and just decided to go glu

I read a research article today about how hookworms are being considered as a standard of care of colitis. Dunno about them used for obesity treatment though. The first thing I did once I figured out I wasn't reacting to gluten anymore was to head for the bakery isle. It had been 13 years..
