Are Gluten-Free Cosmetics A Scam?

I can find no credible evidence that confirms or even suggests that the use of wheat-containing cosmetics and related products (shampoo, face creams) can cause a reaction in people with Celiac disease.

The closest I could find was a theoretical risk with lipstick/lip balm - but even that seemed sketchy at best.

I've replaced my lip products as a precaution, but am wondering if anyone can reference any scientific literature about the rest?

The reason most of us use shampoos and lip products and lotions without obvious gluten ingredients is that we get them in our mouths.  I don't use a shampoo that says gluten-free.  I don't use one that says wheat germ oil.  I don't worry about my mascara because I don't see getting that in my mouth.

So... I don't buy specifically labeled gluten-free cosmetics, lotions, shampoos unless its just happens to be something I want.  I do make sure that all the products that might get in my mouth - lotions, lipsticks, shampoos - do not contain any gluten ingredients.

What ingredients should I avoid in cosmetic products?

Gluten is only toxic to celiac patients and patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) if ingested. Because gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin, the use of cosmetic and shampoos containing gluten has not been shown to be detrimental to patients with celiac disease or DH. However, we do recommend gluten-free lip products, hand lotions and other products that may end up near the mouth. And, in the case of children, a gluten-free shampoo would be wise.

Thank you very much!! That is helpful. This newbie appreciates it!

I think we don't realize how often we put our hands in our mouths.  Hand lotion is an easy one to get in your mouth.  Put some lotion on your hands and then pick up a piece of food and eat it.

The same thing can happen if you scratch your itchy face, then pick up some food and pop it in your mouth. I don't use gluten-free foundation, but I DO wash my hands EVERY TIME before I eat anything.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
