I called GM this am and he said that he did not know of any new formulations. I asked him to please check their latest info on Cocca Puffs and he said that they DO NOT contain wheat, oats, barely and rye. and that it would be clearly labeled if they do. He did caution though to check the label every time you buy it in case they change back! He said it depends on how much back stock the store has of the old product as to when they would get hte new ones. I guess my 2 stores here in MN still had old stock. I will check at the big chains here.

Okay how can old stock have gluten, and new stock not have gluten AND there be no changes???

Becky6 Enthusiast

Sorry that was confusing! He first said no changes, then he looked at my persistance and said oh they don't list and gluten.

With regards to Trix, check the last 5 or 6 ingredients on the label. I suspect you'll find wheat starch. I only mention that, because my husband was in Colorado (we're from Canada) a month ago and he emailed me the label for Trix, he was going to buy some and bring it back. The last or second last line said wheat starch.

Open Original Shared Link

Wheat starch is the 3rd last ingredient...followed by Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) and BHT added to preserve freshness. WAAAAAAYYYY down at the bottom. When my husband first emailed this link to me, I had to read it three times before I found the wheat starch and emailed him back to NOT buy it.

Holycow!! You are right. I read the ingredients like 3 times and did not see that. Thank you for the info!!

I'm in WV and found the cocoa puffs...........i'm from PA and also found them there..from my understanding at this point the only box of trix that don't have wheat startch at the bottom are the small ones in the three packs with cocoa puffs and something else........unless that new 75% more box doesn't have it, i wouldn't know about that......i haven't found the trix thing yet, just cocoa puffs.

but even with that, i've tried them twice and both times gotten pretty sick.....could be coincidence, could've been something else.....either way, something went down with my stomach that was not a good time.

i'm just the mesenger here, i got the emails, passed along the information, tried it out for myself....and found myself feeling pretty icky, but also, cocoa puffs and the chocolatey sugary, blech......that could've been the reason my stomach killed.

But on this message board, no one is trying to make anyone feel stupid or step on anyone's toes...vydorscope and i have been debating this cereal thing for a few days now and never once have i felt that he was being rude.....it's a message board......about cereal. let's keep the emotions to a minimum....unless you are super pumped about cereal, then feel free to share your happy dance moves in the grocery isle so maybe we can try them ourselves :)

Welp just got back from my grocery store, and I dug throught al thei boxes. The newest boxes on the shefl have an expry date of AUG 2006 and still list gluten in the ingredients for both Trix and Cocoa Puff.

Those of you that have gluten-free cocoa puffs, what is the date on the box top? thanks! :)

Coolness! So your store has newer stock then mine. Okay that might mean when the stock in my store is used up I might get some. "new more chocolately taste" is a good sign too, that means there was a deliberate formula change. :) The trix that you have that is NOT gluten-free , whats the date on it?

Jaysonguy Newbie

I'm not even going to touch the whole oatmeal debate lol

Well since Cocoa Puffs are Trix's sunburnt cousins hopefully they get the no gluten treatment sometime soon.

I'll have to go buy the Neopets cereal, Wish they had one not glowing with dye.

Mahee34 Enthusiast

June 06.....i hid that box up in the top cabinet for when i have guests. ha.

but like i said, my reaction to the "gluten free" cocoa puffs was rough.....i'm 0 for 2.....i think i'll try ONE more time when i have some extra days to lay around and then decide if i'll believe the whole safe for us again.....

i imagine the cross contamination factor would be really high considering the product itself used to contain ingrediants that we can't have..

I looked at the store yesterday and the Trix still has wheat starch, but the Cocoa Puffs were OK. Don't know the date but they said something like a more chocolatey taste.

That more chocolatly taste appears to be the key. I'll try them when they arrive. I need some kind of vartiy in cheap cearels.

Wow, I can have Cocoa Puffs and not feel guilty. I can just say they do not contain gluten and smile while my son and I have them for breakfast.

Here in Central Texas, single grocery store boxes of both cocoa puffs and trix have wheat in them still

I was at Sam's last night and the 3-pack trix/lucky charms/cocoa puffs had gluten-free puffs and trix

Ha--I was just thinking the same thing! Right after I thought--m-m, when I get back to the store, I have got to check the Cocoa Puffs :D

 Cereal desperation when the pickins are slim!!!

I am SO TIRED of eating the same three cereals (cocoa pebbles, honey rice puffins, & rice crunch ems).

It's comforting to know that other people are as obsessed about finding new gluten-free food as I am :)

chasesparents Rookie

I'm so excited about the Coco Puffs and Trix deal. I can't wait to go to the Grocery Store to check it out !!!

And your right, it is desperation, when you currently only have a handful of mainstream cereals out there. I'm excited. Thanks to the person who mentioned that those cereals may be becoming gluten free. If it weren't for you, we may have not known for awhile !!!!!

There is some concern that the "new" Cocoa Puffs" may not be gluten-free, in that the caramel color supposedly contains barley malt. I am getting mixed signals from General Mills on this issue, but I received this information from a local support group in NJ.

Mahee34 Enthusiast

that wouldn't suprise me.......i mean i got sick something fierce both times i ate them. and i'm not a super sensetive celiac.

savvvyseller Enthusiast

Here's what I received today from GM in response to my question about the caramel color in the reformulated Cocoa Puffs possibly containing barley malt:

___________

Thank you for contacting General Mills concerning ingredients in our products. As manufacturers and consumers, we understand your concern about potential allergens in the foods you eat. Our primary goal is to provide accurate information; and we believe this is best accomplished by referring to the specific ingredients listed on each product package. This is the most current information for your needs.

If one of our products contains any of the top 8 allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, dairy products, eggs, soy, wheat, crustaceans, and fish) or if it contains sesame, sunflower or mollusks, that ingredient is always listed in the ingredient panel, and also in bold letters just below the list of ingredients. If a product is exposed to any of these allergens in the manufacturing facility the allergen will be listed in bold in the ‘Contains Statement’ just below the list of ingredients. This list is your ingredient assurance for that package. It is not intended for other packaging of the same product. Ingredients may vary from one package to another due to product reformulation. If you have allergy concerns, please read each package ingredient panel.

We hope this information helps you. You may also want to contact the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) at 1-800-929-4040, or visit their web site at www.foodallergy.org. Although they cannot provide specific ingredient information regarding a particular product, they are a good resource to help in the management of your allergies and sensitivities.

However, we do understand that ingredients can be confusing, so we want to assure you if the ingredient label does not list wheat, barley, rye, oats or gluten containing ingredients sourced from these grains, then the product would be gluten-free. Sources of gluten are listed on the label even if the source of gluten is part of another ingredient (such as flavoring or spice). Because ingredients may vary from one package to another due to product reformulation, you should use the product’s ingredient label to provide you with current and accurate information.

We appreciate your interest. Please contact us again with any further questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Kristi Goodman

I followed the Autoimmune Protocol Diet which is really strict for a while, but later other foods can be added back into your diet.  Following the AIP diet strictly allows you digestive system to heal and the inflammation to calm down.  Sort of like feeding a sick baby easy to digest food instead of spicy pizza.   It's important to get the inflammation down because chronic inflammation leads to other health problems.  Histamine is released as part of the autoimmune response to gluten.  High histamine levels make you feel bad and can cause breathing problems (worsening asthma), cardiovascular problems (tachycardia), and other autoimmune diseases (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, diabetes) and even mental health problems. Following the low histamine version of the AIP diet allows the body to clear the histamine from our bodies.  Some foods are high in histamine.  Avoiding these makes it easier for our bodies to clear the histamine released after a gluten exposure.   Vitamin D helps regulate the immune system and calm it down.  Vitamin D is frequently low in Celiacs.  The B Complex vitamins and Vitamin C are needed to clear histamine.   Supplementing with essential vitamins and minerals boosts your intestines' ability to absorb them while healing.   Keep in mind that gluten-free facsimile foods, like gluten-free bread, are not enriched with added vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts are.   They are empty calories, no nutritional value, which use up your B vitamins in order to turn the calories into fuel for the body to function.   Talk to your doctor or nutritionist about supplementing while healing.  Take a good B Complex and extra Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine (shown to promote gut health).  Most B Complex vitamins contain thiamine mononitrate which the body cannot utilize.  Meats and liver are good sources of B vitamins.   Dr. Sarah Ballantyne wrote the book, the Paleo Approach.  She's a Celiac herself.  Her book explains a lot.   I'm so glad you're feeling better and finding your balance!

So I should not eat my gluten free bread?  I will try the vitamins.  Thank you all so very much for your ideas and understanding.  I'm feeling better today and have gathered back my composure!

Some people prefer eating gluten before bed, then sleeping through the worst symptoms at night.  You might want to try that and see if that makes any difference.   Several slices of toast for breakfast sounds okay.  Just try to work up to the Ten grams of gluten.  Cookies might only have a half of a gram of gluten.  The weight of the whole cookie is not the same as the amount of gluten in it.  So do try to eat bread things with big bubbles, like cinnamon rolls.   Yeah, I'm familiar with the "death warmed over" feeling.  I hope you get the genetic test results quickly.  I despise how we have to make ourselves sick to get a diagnosis.  Hang in there, sweetie, the tribe is supporting you.

Thank you, a little expensive but glad to have this source.

@knitty kitty  Thank you very much for the advice. I did the exam this morning, my doctor actually suggested me to take something called "Celiac duo test" in which I first do the genetic test and if it's positive, then I'll have to do the antigen blood test. I have to attend 1 month until my results are ready, so I have some weeks to increase the amount of gluten I eat daily. It will be hard because my health is not the best right now, but I also did a blood test to cheek my nutritional deficiencies. The results will arrive on Tuesday, so I can ask my doctor what should I do to control my symptoms and blood levels during this month. For now I'm resting and paying attention to what I eat— at least I don’t look like a vampire who just woke up, like I did yesterday. I'm still scared because is the first time I've felt this sick, but this is the right moment to turn things around for the better.  I realized that if I eat gluten at lunch I cannot finish the day properly, I become severely tired and sometimes my stomach hurts a lot - let's not talk about the bloating that starts later. Do you think is it ok to eat gluten just in the morning, like some cookies and slices of bread for breakfast?
