head fog and heaviness

migraines

collapsing and pretty bad mood changes.this seems to also come from dairy, it really effects my personal life.

smell change when everything smells stronger and awful.

im still trying to get diagnosed but im terrified of accidentally eating gluten or dairy again .

Except for the smelling changes, everything you list is common with Celiac Disease/Gluten Sensitivity. Changes in sense of smell is also a well-documented symptom of COVID--19.

Sounds like what I experienced with Histamine Intolerance and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome.

The body normally releases histamine as part of its defense mechanism to destroy harmful things we've ingested, like gluten if we have Celiac Disease, and dairy in lactose intolerance, or if allergic to casein, shellfish, or other foods.  Ingestion of foods naturally containing high levels of histamine and our bodies' release of additional histamine can cause excessive reactions.

Histamine release is a part of the "fight or flight response."  Histamine causes an adrenaline rush in order to rev up our mind and body for quick action in order to fight or evade the perceived threat.  Heightened senses such as an increased sense of smell and hearing results.

Unfortunately, too much histamine is a bad thing, especially for our brains, resulting in  migraines and mood changes, or sometimes shutting down altogether and collapsing.

Our bodies utilize Vitamin C and Niacin (Vitamin B3) and Vitamin D to break down the histamine and calm down from that adrenaline rush.  Blueberries help, too.  (Weird science-y fact I thought I would throw in.😸)

Try the Low Histamine Diet to avoid foods with high histamine levels.  Keep a food/mood/poo'd journal to keep track of your triggers.  It will be useful to show the doctor.  Also consider supplementing with Vitamin C and Niacin, with your doctor's approval.

Hope this helps!

Hi Jo.

You say you're "still trying to get diagnosed" so it sounds like perhaps you are not yet diagnosed with celiac disease?  If not, a good first step is to request a blood test to assess whether you even have celiac disease so at least you will know whether a strict gluten-free diet is required.  If the blood test is "normal" (no gluten antibodies), then you can breathe a sigh of relief and start considering other non-celiac disease issues, including food allergies, IBS, SIBO, and/or anxiety/depression.

Changes in smell aren't usually attributed to celiac disease.  I have experienced many of the symptoms you note--esp. migraines, brain fog, fatigue, insomnia, heavy body sensations--but many are also classic signs of IBS, anxiety/depression/insomnia which, in my case, seem so much worse since the CV pandemic started.

For me, the simplest, easiest, most stress-free way to steer clear of even minute gluten exposure is by avoiding ALL packaged foods in favor of buying, eating only fresh meats, fruits and veggies.  I also avoid dairy, sugar, and oats (because I don't trust gluten-free labels, esp. on products possibly harvested and packed with wheat crops).

Some people on this board swear by "gluten-free labels" on packaged food, but I don't trust them and hate reading labels (or doing internet searches) for every single food item (too time-consuming, stressful).  And I've found most labeled gluten-free foods to be too expensive, full of additives, and not very tasty.

I hope you feel better soon.

I would hesitate to recommend tetracycline or any antibiotic as a long term therapy option because of the negative impact it has on the gut biome. I took it for years as a teenager for acne and I'm convinced it was a contributing factor in my having developed celiac disease.

Welcome to the forum, @Pamp8, I stopped foods high in iodine, like dairy and eggs, kelp and iodized salt.   I take Niacinamide also called Nicotinamide or Vitamin B3.  I haven't taken the tetracycline with it.   It seems to make the blisters disappear quicker. I also use tallow balm, a cream made from beef fat, which has been used for thousands of years.  It is absorbed into the skin better than creams made from plants.  It helps prevent or lesson scarring.  See the study below. Two Cases of Dermatitis Herpetiformis Successfully Treated with Tetracycline and Niacinamide "The combination of tetracycline and nicotinamide can be recommended as a useful therapy for patients where dapsone is not available or for patients who do not tolerate dapsone." https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30390734/

First off, I’m so sorry you’ve been dealing with this for so long—being sick for half your life is unimaginably tough, and it’s huge that you’ve finally gotten some answers. A celiac diagnosis can feel overwhelming (especially on top of being vegan!), but it’s also a turning point. Your body is about to start healing, and that’s hopeful! This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):

Yes, it is likely your villi healed, but if you are exposed to gluten regularly again the damage will likely come back and cause some potentially serious health issues.

Hey yall! I am dealing with a new diagnosis. I have been sick in some sort of way for 10 years. I am 22. I can’t remember a time in the last decade I have not had some strange symptom. This last year it got way worse. I lost 40 pounds and had to drop out of school. I ended up getting and endo and blood tests and got positive results for celiac. I am looking for advice of ANY type. I am vegan so this is a big adjustment to add this to my diet. Thansk fro the help.
