Rachel,

I don't want you to have mercury toxicity either. I just want you to find some answers to why your health hasn't improved. It beginning to sound like this could be part of, or, the answer. Certainly sounds suspicious. At least you are seeing a doctor that specializes in treatment for this.

I also agree, since your doctor said it's better to have mercury poisoning, that it's a relief you don't have lyme's.

Rach,

Two things...

First, do not get hung up on ONE thing causing EVERYTHING. You could have more then one root cuase.

Second.. if it is mecury ... what is the treatment?

Yeah...you're right. The Doc already said lots of things will need to be addressed. Whether it was Lyme or Mercury...they both will cause other problems and affect hormones, digestive system, brain function, allergies, thyroid, adrenals, etc...

All of these things will have to be treated....along with whatever the "root" cause is.

The treatment for mercury is chelation. Its a drug that is either taken orally or by injection. The mercury would not be moving around the body...it stores itself in various tissues....especially in the brain. The chelation drug has the ability to bind with the mercury and "pull" it out of the tissue to be excreted in the urine. Its the only "known" chelator powerful enough to do this.

It has risks though. If it pulls too much mercury out and your liver and kidneys cant handle it....it can be redistributed through the body...causing even more poisoning and damaging more tissue. The dose cant be too high and the liver and kidneys need to be functioning well enough to allow the toxins to be eliminated. Its not a treatment that can be rushed and it requires a very knowledgeable and experienced Dr. Thats why my previous Dr.'s sent me to this guy.

To test for mercury toxicity they would give me a dose of the chelator and then test my urine over the follwing 24 hours to see if large amounts of mercury are being excreted. If it appears that I have toxic levels of mercury....they would then continue with chelation over several months until the mercury is no longer being excreted.

I think thats how it works.

Rach,

My wife Kristi, used to work with me. Enough siad :P

Trust me, as a guy, I can tell you for sure... he is not looking for "a friend"

Yup....good thing we have a guy's perspective on this.....The Dave has been beyond supportive of you Rach....just seems like a wonderful, caring adn supportive guy (and super goofy, too! :P )

It was obvious a couple days into his posting. One day someone said if I guy read 110 pages of posts, he was very interested. Later, he quoted that and put this emoticon with it  .

that's exactly what I was thinking....and wasn't that the cutest thing, BTW!

I'm working as a receptionist right now and I'm supposed to answer the phone "Welcome to Media Monitors Meredith speaking" but I was reading this thread when the last call rang and I accidentally said "Welcome to Rachelville...." oops that was really bad (yet somewhat funny). Good thing I'm not a professional receptionist back home. haha

quite the tongue-twister, Mango! very funny......

Poor Dave (not even here to defend himself)....I know for sure if he does read this...he's gonna turn bright red.

I think he would be at a loss for words...for once. :P

no, not Dave!! a loss for words?

Hi Rachel- And everyone- I'm glad you don't have Lyme but you must have been really bummed not to have a definitive answr yet...Grrr... I hope it's not mercury either but it's got to be something....hmmm... perhaps lack of romance :P

We had the battery replaced in the van a few weeks ago and something triggered our sound sytem. Now it doesn't work. I need to call and find out how to get past the error code now. Can you tell I keep on forgetting? :o

Good evening all!!!

Rachel,

I am also very sorry you didn't get the answer you were hoping for.

I completely can identify with your line of thinking, and understand how you feel. Before I came to this board, I didn't personally know anyone, nor did I even hear of anyone, with the food sensitivities and health problems like I had/have. I had all these strange things happening with my body and everything I ate/drank, breathed, absorbed made me react, I felt like a freak of nature. I thought if I could just know what was causing all of it, if it had a name so I could have a label to what I was dealing with, and a solution then things would be better, easier- and in a round about way I thought it would also make me normal. Then I come here and learn that there are so many of us dealing with what appears to be the complete breakdown of the body, everything so complicated, complex, no easy answer.

I think Vincent gave good advice, that there are multiple things going on. The onion analogy comes to mind here, you are just going to have to peel away at everything layer by layer. But I feel there still is a solution on the horizon, it just might not be a straight road.

One layer at a time.......could be a new motto

Also, just an observation, but didn't you mention you worked in produce before and started getting iritations from handling everything? I can't remember exactly what you posted, but I thought it was something like that. I have to wonder where this exposure to the pesticides/chemicals they put on produce falls on your illness timeline.

I feel like I should say something about The Dave, since everyone else is  The Dave, you know we all love you here in Rachelville. Thanks for all the support you give Rachel :)

Hi Julie!!!

I'm just heading in to get Seth to bed. You guys will all be gone by the time I get back :( . Maybe he'll go to sleep quickly. If Mitch gets home before that then I'll not be on til around 10, unless he's too tired to get on the computer. He's been really tired after his work this week since he's still recovering from surgery. I think he said it would take a month.

And for the record, I fully believe that WOMEN might find MEN they think are friends.

I've had lots of male friends over the years. Guy friends that I would hang out with, chat with, but not date. I guess they were interested at one time *but* I was always in a relationship and not giving them reason to think I would leave the relationship. They never got anything more than friendship from me and it didnt stop them from being my friend....soooo I think men and women CAN be friends....although that might not be the original intent.

Julie,

I think there are many things going on at this point but I cant help but believe that ONE thing caused it. The reason is that for me the breakdown of my health didnt occur slowly over time. It was sudden and rapid. I was in perfect health and then almost over night I was unable to function. It seems like one thing would have had to have been a major factor in all of this.

My gut instinct tells me that if that "one" factor is identified and treated..the rest of the complications will be able to heal themselves. I sort of think its useless to try to treat adrenals, food intolerances, dysbioisis, candida, etc.....when the reason for all of these things is still unidentified. Thtas just the way my brain works though. I think its most important to find out the trigger for all of this.

It was probably about 10 years ago that I had an irritation on my hands while working in produce. It was just some brown or discolored spots that would show up and then go away. There was no pain or itching or anything....just some random brown spots. At the time I used to work in the backroom all day.....with my hands in the sink... washing and trimming all the lettuce and greens. The water was always pretty dirty and I never liked to wear gloves. I'm sure there were pesticides and stuff like that on the lettuce as well. Eventually the spots went away and never came back.

I kind of dont think its linked to any of this since I really was in perfect health back then and all the way up to whatever happened that one month 4 years ago. You remember all those symptoms I had highlighted on the Lyme and Mercury symptoms list?? I never had a single symptom on those lists my entire life and then suddenly I had all of them....just like that. I think if my health was breaking down prior to that then I probably would have had some symptoms here and there but I never did. The whole thing is very strange.

Yea, you've made Vincent's point ... women think they are friends with men. :) I recently found out, from one of my many male friends in high school, that this is true. They're interested, they're just chicken. You think men are brave in that way, but theyr'e not, they're afraid, especially when they really like someone. He's not going to come out and say that he's interested, because he'd rather have what he has with you than have nothing. This was from a very funny, outgoing, not shy guy I knew in HS and still am "friends" with today ... only today, I am quite sure we're just friends since I'm married!!! Am I right, Vincent (about the first part)?

Sorry you can't trace your health problems to one thing. I think you are more like me in that it's a lot of inter-related, sub-clinical things making you very sick. My hair analysis showed both mercury and aluminum toxicity, but also that my body was responding as if it had hypoglycemia, low thyroid, anemia, adrenal fatigue, anxiety, autoimmune disease, fatigue, and inflammation. So, my doc has me doing many things, basically lots of rest, bed by 10-11, sleep at least 8-9 hours, nothing strenuous, relaxing exercises only, rest when tired, several small meals all featuring protein, lots of veggies, minimal fruit (sugar), no juice, no caffeine (or even decaf coffee), no alcohol, no sugar. She says that as my system rebuilds my food sensitivities will go away in the reverse order in which they came. She said I won't be as hyper-sensitive to gluten in about 2 years, though since I'm genetically programmed for it, I'll never be eating a plate of normal pasta again, but cc won't make me sick for a week. It will be more like Morgan and Chloe are, sensitive, but not sick from it all the time. Her idea is that as the body gets stronger it will start detoxing itself, so she's not having me do anything about the metal toxicity at this point. I guess when I get my next hair analysis done in a year, maybe she'll address it then. It's certainly not an easy answer, but I'm feeling better each day.

I'm referring to Rachel and Carla's posts about men being friends.

I think it would be very difficult for a man to remain friends with a woman over the long haul. Usually if the woman they are interested in isn't interested back they will drift away, or if they don't, once they find someone else the friendship will be over. I don't know too many women that would want to date a man who had another woman friend that they were "just" friends with. That said there may be a few out there who wouldn't mind, but it's highly unlikely.

I had a relationship like that. I dated someone for awhile, we split up, but were best friends for quite awhile. I could talk to him about everything. A few years later I met Mitch, I heard from this previous friend a couple times. It seems once we were married (or maybe it was engaged) that I never heard from him again. It's like he was waiting for me to be available for him again and once I was married, he knew that I wasn't.

Men and women as friends.....my humble opinion....it works quite well in youth (high school, college, beyond that a bit) and is much more difficult as we age. whoever said on here that men were scared....so true. They approach it as a "friends" thing, but in my life, they were always interested.

In college, for a couple of years two guys were my best friends and constant companions...they both took me out for my birthday dinner one year. One (Brad, aka Sheep) got up and left the table...Jimmy adn I started talking....I said, I think Sheep's in love with me. Jimmy says - - Schmooz (my HS and college nickname  ), one of us is in love with you, and it isn't Sheep. Well, guess what, they BOTH were.....it was crazy. Here I was, just thinking how much riotous fun we all were having....and they both were pining away.

Kinda changed things after that......and Jimmy married his (first) wife after getting a definitive answer that I was never going to be in love with him.....

Dang, the guy is now making about 4 to 5 million A YEAR. What was I thinking???

Welcome to the forum, @Judy M! Yes, he definitely needs to continue eating gluten until the day of the endoscopy. Not sure why the GI doc advised otherwise but it was a bum steer.  Celiac disease has a genetic component but also an "epigenetic" component. Let me explain. There are two main genes that have been identified as providing the "potential" to develop "active" celiac disease. We know them as HLA-DQ 2.5 (aka, HLA-DQ 2) and HLA-DQ8. Without one or both of these genes it is highly unlikely that a person will develop celiac disease at some point in their life. About 40% of the general population carry one or both of these two genes but only about 1% of the population develops active celiac disease. Thus, possessing the genetic potential for celiac disease is far less than deterministic. Most who have the potential never develop the disease. In order for the potential to develop celiac disease to turn into active celiac disease, some triggering stress event or events must "turn on" the latent genes. This triggering stress event can be a viral infection, some other medical event, or even prolonged psychological/emotional trauma. This part of the equation is difficult to quantify but this is the epigenetic dimension of the disease. Epigenetics has to do with the influence that environmental factors and things not coded into the DNA itself have to do in "turning on" susceptible genes. And this is why celiac disease can develop at any stage of life. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition (not a food allergy) that causes inflammation in the lining of the small bowel. The ingestion of gluten causes the body to attack the cells of this lining which, over time, damages and destroys them, impairing the body's ability to absorb nutrients since this is the part of the intestinal track responsible for nutrient absorption and also causing numerous other food sensitivities such as dairy/lactose intolerance. There is another gluten-related disorder known as NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just, "gluten sensitivity") that is not autoimmune in nature and which does not damage the small bowel lining. However, NCGS shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea. It is also much more common than celiac disease. There is no test for NCGS so, because they share common symptoms, celiac disease must first be ruled out through formal testing for celiac disease. This is where your husband is right now. It should also be said that some experts believe NCGS can transition into celiac disease. I hope this helps.

My husband has had lactose intolerance for his entire life (he's 68 yo).  So, he's used to gastro issues. But for the past year he's been experiencing bouts of diarrhea that last for hours.  He finally went to his gastroenterologist ... several blood tests ruled out other maladies, but his celiac results are suspect.  He is scheduled for an endoscopy and colonoscopy in 2 weeks.  He was told to eat "gluten free" until the tests!!!  I, and he know nothing about this "diet" much less how to navigate his in daily life!! The more I read, the more my head is spinning.  So I guess I have 2 questions.  First, I read on this website that prior to testing, eat gluten so as not to compromise the testing!  Is that true? His primary care doctor told him to eat gluten free prior to testing!  I'm so confused.  Second, I read that celiac disease is genetic or caused by other ways such as surgery.  No family history but Gall bladder removal 7 years ago, maybe?  But how in God's name does something like this crop up and now is so awful he can't go a day without worrying.  He still works in Manhattan and considers himself lucky if he gets there without incident!  Advice from those who know would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've done an excellent job of meticulously tracking the rash's unpredictable behavior, from its symmetrical spread and stubborn scabbing to the potential triggers you've identified, like the asthma medication and dietary changes. It's particularly telling that the rash seems to flare with wheat consumption, even though your initial blood test was negative—as you've noted, being off wheat before a test can sometimes lead to a false negative, and your description of the other symptoms—joint pain, brain fog, stomach issues—is very compelling. The symmetry of the rash is a crucial detail that often points toward an internal cause, such as an autoimmune response or a systemic reaction, rather than just an external irritant like a plant or mites. I hope your doctor tomorrow takes the time to listen carefully to all of this evidence you've gathered and works with you to find some real answers and effective relief. Don't be discouraged if the rash fluctuates; your detailed history is the most valuable tool you have for getting an accurate diagnosis.

In this case the beer is excellent, but for those who are super sensitive it is likely better to go the full gluten-free beer route. Lakefront Brewery (another sponsor!) has good gluten-free beer made without any gluten ingredients.
    • trents
Welcome to the forum, @catsrlife! Celiac disease can be diagnosed without committing to a full-blown "gluten challenge" if you get a skin biopsy done during an active outbreak of dermatitis herpetiformis, assuming that is what is causing the rash. There is no other known cause for dermatitis herpetiformis so it is definitive for celiac disease. You would need to find a dermatologist who is familiar with doing the biopsy correctly, however. The samples need to be taken next to the pustules, not on them . . . a mistake many dermatologists make when biopsying for dermatitis herpetiformis.
