I think I take pretty good care of my teeth...I'm not perfect, but I brush twice a day and floss (not everyday, but frequently). However I've always had trouble with them. Currently I'm in the process of getting not one or two, but five cavities filled. Granted I don't go to the dentist often, because novicane doesn't work well on me and frankly I'm scared. I don't think my husband takes as good of care of his teeth as I do....he never flosses and brushes every morning but not always before bed. He does rinse with Listerine everyday though. He has NEVER had a cavity. I don't think he has been to a dentist for a few years either! Do the rest of you have similarly weak teeth? I've wondered if my problem is related to celiac disease?

I lost more than 10 teeth in less than 5 years because of this disease and not finding out about it until 10 months ago. What teeth are left are still having problem. Probably because of the late discovery. Well I figured I had but the doctors were too dense to listen to me. I had a friend who lost every tooth in her head due to this disease.

I'm a dental hygienst and have seen similar situations is many, many families........ one person is diligent w/homecare and has cavities and/or gum disease, and someone else barely even brushes and is prob free. I'm not sure that your probs are specifically related to your celiac, but being cavity prone can be sort of genetic. Meaning that, how your body reacts to bacteria may be more agressive than someone else..... or the make up of your teeth could be different, and then more prone. I have two children, with similar diets and the exact same homecare routines...... my son has had 5 fillings (he is 7yrs old), and my daughter (who is 5) has no probs at all. Just watch that you are rinsing well after eating anything citrus (don't brush directly after, because the enamel is weakened by the acid and more succeptable to wear), brush w/a fluoridated toothpaste (as far as I know Colgate products are safe for Celiacs), floss daily, and ask your dentist about at home flouride rinse to use before going to bed. (nothing to eat/drink after rinsing w/flouride for 30min). Listerine is very good at helping to kill that pesky bacteria. Good luck with everything!

I think it is genetic. My Dad was very careless about his teeth. He died at 86 years old with all his teeth, maybe a filling or two. My Mom has lost quite a few teeth and she's always been the cautious one.

Before going gluten-free/CF I had some teeth hurting. But since being gluten-free for a year and CF for 6 months they're behaving much better. My xrays were fine, so not sure what the pain was about.

I had my first root canal last spring and my second one a couple of weeks ago. I had two fillings in the last year and I have another one I'm taking care of next week, before I even get my mold for new crown. I have Osteopenia due to undx'd Celiac so that's where my issues lie. It's related to Celiac and I just hope now that I'm absorbing nutrients again, I can keep my teeth.

I had horrible teeth the whole time I was growing up - cavities galore. I had 12 at one time once and I wasn't allowed to eat candy, drink pop or eat much sugar. I brushed my teeth twice a day. I continued to get cavities into adulthood. When I found out, 10 years ago, that I have food allergies/intolerances and quit eating wheat, eggs, soy and dairy I stopped getting cavities. I've only had to get old fillings replaced and routine cleanings. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I firmly believe that the change of diet changed my teeth.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
