what a pain in the rear! seriously people...why not let water be WATER!!!

penguin Community Regular

I'm sorry, why is adding minerals a problem?

eKatherine Apprentice

It may not be spring water, but it's undoubtedly water. and at least as pure as tap water is. At least they are honest about it on the label. Many types of bottles water are just tap water, but do not label themselves as such.

Ursa Major Collaborator

Uhmmmmmm...........Dasani IS tap water. To be specific, it is purified tap water from Toronto, Canada. So, they take tap water (and Toronto water is fluoridated, meaning, I am sure it has fluoride in it), filter it and add some minerals (and who knows how high quality those are?), bottle it and sell it. I don't buy Dasani water if I can help it.

Has anybody read about how incredibly hard (and in reality impossible) it is to make those bombs they claim those terrorists were going to make out of liquids, on a plane? It simply can't be done, as for starters you need a lot more than just a couple of bottles of liquid. Here is a link that explains it all. Which makes you REALLY wonder about those idiot governments and airlines who have arrested a bunch of people, and are imposing all these stupid restrictions on travellers. Open Original Shared Link This one shows how impossible it would be for terrorists to make a liquid bomb in the air.

And this one shows that those arrests had no basis in evidence that those people were actually terrorists. Open Original Shared Link

Purified water with minerals is still water. It just doesn't have bacteria and parasites in it.

You're right, it is definitely still water. But why BUY tap water, when you can buy spring water? It doesn't seem to make any sense at all. But if that's all that's available on a plane, I'd rather drink Dasani water than get dehydrated. Sometimes we just can't be that fussy. I doubt that Dasani water will harm anybody short term.

I LOVE Dasani water.

jerseyangel Proficient

I buy and drink spring water, but if I were on a plane, I would drink the Dasani water--it's better than getting dehydrated. Also better, in my opinion, than soda.

In a situation like that, for a relatively short time, I can't see where it would hurt anything.

Guest Viola

Dasani water is just fine, we use it on a daily basis as we are on open creek water out here in the country. So, it's boil everything, or buy something we can afford. Or maybe you would like to try our tap water ... after all it is a pure, mountain, beautifully clear, quite large creek. The fact that it is open to deer, bear, goat, wood rats, and field mice is no problem ... it's pure creek water <_< Giardia anyone???

Why does every thing that doesn't say pure have to be blown out of porportion and be so scary? I think we should be aware of what is in things only to the point of obviously being harmful, like gluten, and if you are allergic, then dairy or what ever you happen to be allergic to.

Please people ... don't sweat the small stuff! :o:rolleyes:

I am going to have to agree with Shriley. About 40 years ago, my husband and I lived in Seattle and we would go up into the mountains for a day or two. The one thing that everyone said was "do not drink the river water". The river water looked so pure and wonderful. But, they were filled with parasites and other things. Those with knowledge said that the rivers were no longer pure. And this was 40 years ago. I will drink water that has been purified anyday over fresh river water or even spring water. Does anyone of us know what is leaching into the ground near the spring water? I don't.

The people arrested in Britain will be tried in a court of law and the evidence will be in the public domain. They won't be shuffled off to Guantanemo Bay.

In the meantime, a lot of them are in prison, having been arrested on very flimsy evidence at best, hardly a good example of western justice.

Mouse and Viola, did I say drink CREEK water? Of course not. I said 'Spring Water', as in water as it comes out of the ground, BEFORE it can get contaminated by animals. I have no intentions of drinking creek water that hasn't been purified and made safe.

Since Dasani is really just nice tap water, which is water taken from Lake Ontario and purified, I DO prefer spring water over that (and of course, I very much hope it has been tested and cleaned of any impurities before being bottled and sold as well).

There *is* something wrong with Dasani water. I'm not sure what it is though. All I know is that I'm extremely sensitive to chemicals and impurities..I have to eat all organic foods, I only drink bottled water and the only one thats made me sick is Dasani. I noticed this a long time ago and I didnt even realize the problem at first but I think instinctively I avoided Dasani water....this was before I even really restricted my diet. I just began to have a fear of that particular bottled water.

I started to think maybe I was a little paranoid so recently I drank some and I paid for it....I got really sick. I would get just as sick drinking really bad tap water. There is obviously nothing "pure" about that water so why even buy it when you can get the same stuff from the sink??

Well, if you'd read the original post, you'll realize that the only reason we're talking about water is, that people can't take their own water on air planes anymore, due to the restrictions governments put on airlines, because of a perceived terrorist threat. Namely, somebody coming onto an airplane with bottles that have in them what LOOKS like water, but is in reality stuff to make bombs while traveling through the air.

I am providing links to show that that is pure nonsense and can't be done, and that they're putting a lot of people in a situation where they're at the mercy of the airlines to provide them with whatever water they see fit to serve. In this case it was Dasani water, which was in this particular case NOT a good idea.

Rachel, I've found that Dasani does something to me as well. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I try to avoid it, too, it makes me feel sort of weird.

Nantzie Collaborator

I haven't had any perceptible reaction to Dasani, at least in my experience. But even just drinking it a few times I've found it to be horrid stuff. Very distasteful. I'd MUCH rather have tap water.

Even with that, I don't know why it surprises me so much that it has ingredients in it other than water. That's disgusting. Water should be water.

Blech.

Shirley,

I wish I didn't have to sweat the small stuff. I've been sick for a very long time, and simply being gluten-free dosen't cut it for me.

After spending most of the past year trying to figure out the causes of my symptoms, with the help of my allergist, I have figured out that I'm intolerant to many foods in addition to gluten.

One of those foods is coconut. I have found out that coconut hulls are used widely in water filters. I even had one in my house--a feature in my then-brand new refrigerator.

I had constant low-level abdominal distress--no matter what I ate or didn't eat. Looking back, it was shortly after we bought the 'fridge that it became apparent that the gluten-free diet wasn't going to be enough for me. When I finally figured it out--and I probably wouldn't have but for a trip out of town (where I was away from the water), and Andrea asking her water filter "guy" what was actually in there.

Poland Spring Spring Water was the one suggested to me by my Kinesiologist. As soon as I switched to it, I noticed a difference.

I know better than to drink from a creek or stream--and the term "natural", to me, does not automaticly mean that it's something I should be consuming--especially with the way advertisers plaster it all over everything. ;)

Well they are actually rather easy to make but rather harder not to kill yourself with.

Nitroglycerine or TNT dissolved in ethyl alcohol are both a doddle to make at home .. the real question is how not to set them off before you want.

However the whole restriction is pretty much stupid, turning nitroglycerine into dynamite can be done at home too. The simplest way is swimming pool filters (true dynamite) but you can use combusables like newspaper or bandages. I can't see why you couldn't also use something like a loaf of bread off the top of my head.

Meanwhile pilots are flying long haul without eyedrops and contanct lens cleaner (doesn't that sound dangerous - you might miss a runway or take the wrong one though they would never admit if it was the cause)

Has it not occured to anyone that the pilot is behind a locked bomb proof door and if he wanted to crash the plane taking his contact lens cleaner away isn't much of a hindrance to this? Not to mention the thousands of tons of kerosene they are responsible for???

Steve, but will one bottle full of it (whatever it is you choose) be enough to bring down a plane? I have my doubts.

So is this same restriction given to pilots? I figured it was just for passengers.

As for the pilot getting on the wrong runway comment--he had just started flying for the day! I think that's a little...silly to suggest that the reason for the crash may have been a lack of contact lens solution, don't you?

How interesting...

I absolutely refuse to drink Dasani water because it always makes me sick. About five or six years ago when it first came out, it was the only bottled water we had at the place I worked. And every morning I drank a bottle and every morning I got sick. Sadly, it took me WAY too long to put two and two together. Either way, I still get sick everytime I drink it.

And I am FURIOUS with the University of South Carolina because over the summer they signed a contract with Coca-Cola and now all you can get anywhere on campus is Dasani. I miss my Aquafina...so I try and stop by the gas station on my long class days and buy a Liter of water before I go.

And for the record, I was recently on a Northwest flight and the water was regular spring bottled water. Granted, it just tasted like the plastic cup...

I should have put a quote, but yes, you did miss something if you thought everyone was talking about water. I was responding to something I disagreed with in the context of the London and Madrid bombings, and of course 911. The recent restrictions on what people can carry on trans-atlantic flights included food and drinks. I don't agree that this is a Bush/Blair inspired conspiracy to inconvenience us.

Matilda

I don't think its specifically to inconvience us but i don't believe it has any practical value either. It is simply a "we are doing something" measure and the extension of this to PILOT's is simply dangerous.

Now on a very rare ocaision I am actually qualified to comment on something as an expert I might as well take the chance.

Spring water is just any water that emerges from underground, in a commercial sense it has certain restrictions but in a scientific sense not.

In the simplest sense water goes into the ground, this can be directly through rainfall or through seeps in a river or lake. It then filters through the various rocks takes on minerals from these rocks. This filtering process can take 5 years or it can take 25,000 years.

Exactly what minerals depends on the actual rocks. Some of these minerals can be extremely toxic and in high doses and can include many natural pollutants like oil. Some spring water is very radioactive, others have high amounts of toxic chemicals like selenium or arsenic. Some spring water has so much salt it is 1000x saltier than seawater others have low amounts.

He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis after years of suffering without answers. I lost my mind. I lost my job. I lost so much time. I lost Me. Conventional doctors are opulent come near me and the one who did sat across the room, misdiagnosed me, pumped me full of steroids which collapsed my entire hip for 6 months. So without answers I began my holistic journey. Fast forward a couple of years and still struggling with a mysterious whole body itchy, crawling “skin hell”, perfect teeth now deteriorating, thick hair now thinning rapidly and no more than a day or 2 at most relief….An acquaintance opened up a functional medicine practice. Cash only, I found a way. Within a month tests clearly showing my off the charts gluten allergy/sensitivity as well as the depletion of vital nutrients due to leaky gut and intestinal damage. dermatitis herpetiformis was more than likely what I was experiencing with my skin. I was happy. I thought this is easy, eat healthy Whole Foods, follow the diet restrictions and I finally get to heal and feel confident and like myself again very soon! 😔 Supplements are very pricey but I got them and began my healing. Which leads to the other major issue: not working, stay at home Mom of young kids, entirely financially dependent on my man of 7 plus years. He’s never been supportive of anything I’ve ever done or been thru. He controls everything. I’m not given much money ever at a time and when he does leave money it’s only enough to possibly get gas. His excuse is that I’ll spend it on other things. So my “allowance” is inconsistent and has conditions. He withholds money from me as punishment for anything he wants. Since being diagnosed, he’s gained a new control tactic to use as punishment. He now is in control of when I get to eat. He asked for proof of my diagnosis and diet bc he said I made it up just to be able to eat expensive organic foods. Then after I sent him my file from my doctor he then said she wasn’t a real doctor. 😡. I go days upon days starving, sometimes breaking down and eating things I shouldn’t bc I’m so sick then I pay horribly while he gets annoyed and angry bc I’m not keeping up with all the duties I’m supposed to be doing. His abuse turns full on when I’m down and it’s in these desperate times when I need his support and care the most that I’m punished with silence, being starved, ignored, belittled. He will create more of a mess just bc I’m unable to get up and clean so that when I am better, I’m so overwhelmed with chores to catch up that the stress causes me to go right back into a flare from hell and the cycle repeats. I’m punished for being sick. I’m belittled for starving and asking for healthy clean water. I’m purposely left out of his life. He won’t even tell me he’s going to the grocery or to get dinner bc he doesn’t want me to ask him for anything. I have no one. I have nothing. Im not better. My supplements ran out and I desperately need Vitamin D3 and a methylated B complex at the very minimal just to function….he stares at me blankly…no, a slight smirk, no words. He’s happiest when im miserable and I am miserable.  this is so long and im condensing as much as I can but this situation is so complicated and disgusting. And it’s currently my life. The “IT” girl, the healthy, beautiful, perfect skin, perfect teeth, thick and curly locks for days, creative and talented IT girl….now I won’t even leave this house bc Im ashamed of what this has dont to my body, my skin. Im disgusted. The stress is keeping me from healing and I think he knows that and that’s why he continues to keep me in that state. He doesn’t want me confident or successful. He doesn’t want me healed and healthy bc then how would he put the blame of all his problems on me? This journey has been hell and I’ve been in Hell before. I’ve been killed by an ex, I’ve been raped, robbed, held hostage, abused beyond nightmares but the cruelty I’ve experienced from him bc of this disease is the coldest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve wanted to give up. Starving and in tears, desperate…I found a local food pantry in our small town so I reached out just saying I had Celiac and was on hard times. This woman is blessing me daily with prepared gluten free meals, donations, educational info, people who know this disease and how they manage life and the blessings just keep coming. But it’s overwhelming and I feel like I don’t deserve it at all. He just glared and I know he’s going to sabotage it somehow. I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m so broken and just want peace and healing.

@Colleen H   I am just curious,  when you were tested for coeliac disease, did the doctors find out if you had any deficiencies? Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by certain deficiencies, for example, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium.   Might be worth looking into having some more tests.  Pins and needles can be neuropathy, again caused by deficiencies, such as iron and B12,  which can be reversed if these deficiencies are addressed. In the UK where I live we are usually only tested for iron, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies at diagnosis.   I was very iron anemic and supplementation made a big difference.  B12 was low normal, but in other countries the UK's low normal would be considered a deficiency.  My vitamin D was low normal, and I've been supplementing ever since (when I remember to take it!) My pins and needles definitely started to improve when my known deficiencies were addressed.  My nutritionist also gave me a broad spectrum supplement which really helped, because I suspect I wasn't just deficient in what I mention above but in many other vitamins and minerals.  But a word of warning, don't take iron unless blood tests reveal you actually need it, and if you are taking it your levels must be regularly monitored because too much can make you ill.  (And if you are currently taking iron, that might actually be making your stomach sore - it did mine, so my GP changed my iron supplementation to a gentler form, ferrous gluconate). Lastly, have you been trying to take anything to lessen the pain in your gut?  I get a sore stomach periodically, usually when I've had too much rich food, or when I have had to take an aspirin or certain antibiotics, or after glutening.  When this happens, I take for just a few days a small daily dose of OTC omeprazole.  I also follow a reflux or gastritis diet. There are lots online but the common denominators to these diets is you need to cut out caffeine, alcohol, rich, spicy, acidic food etc and eat small regularly spaced meals.   When I get a sore stomach, I also find it helpful to drink lots of water.  I also find hot water with a few slices of ginger very soothing to sip, or camomile tea.  A wedge pillow at night is good for reflux. Also,  best not to eat a meal 2-3 hours before going to bed. If the stomach pain is getting worse, though, it would be wise to see the doctor again. I hope some of this helps. Cristiana

I was diagnosed with coeliac disease a couple of years ago [ish]. I love my food and a variety of food, so it's been hard, as it is with everyone. I try and ensure everything I eat doesn't contain gluten, but occasionally I think something must have got through that has gluten in. Mainly I know because I have to dash to the loo, but recently I have noticed that I feel nauseous after possibly being glutened. I think the thing that I have got better at is knowing what to do when I feel wiped out after a gluten 'episode'. I drink loads of water, and have just started drinking peppermint tea. I also have rehydration powders to drink. I don't feel like eating much, but eventually feel like I need to eat. Gluten free flapjacks, or gluten free cereal, or a small gluten free kids meal are my go to. I am retired, so luckily I can rest, sometimes even going to bed when nothing else works. So I feel that I am getting better at knowing how to try and get back on track. I am also trying to stick to a simpler menu and eat mostly at home so that I can be more confident about what I am eating. THANKS TO THOSE WHO REPLIED ABOUT THE NAUSEA .
