Ok - MUST interupt on the sauce debate as I be a native from whence it came

It's spelt worcestershire sauce (one 'H')

Pronounced (by the natives) wooster - sheer sauce

I wanted to visit Wooster-sheer when we were across the pond in the summer, as the town of Lye is there...Apparently my namesakes started up the village a million years ago. I'm sure it's quite an...interesting...place, with my ancestors all over the place..

It's hard to resist cuddling with my furball too. He keeps me warm and sometimes he kneeds his paws into my back so it is like having a massage too.

It's such adorable, but curious, behavior. Why on earth do they do this?

EMILY!!!!!! How can you function without it???????? Ours is called Lea and Perrins.....

Susie!! I am certain that the stuff I was buying was Lea and Perrins. It definitely had wheat in it...perhaps they chock it full of our biggest natural resource here in Canada, but not in the States?

 Must have been that North Umberland MIL.............

...Gad...That North Umberland MIL....Four more days....

....But who's counting?

John told me it feels good them...almost like a turn on...Ours really likes fleece blankets.

WooooHooo!! A guy across the hall just came over to ask me what/where gluten free foods he should get for a friend coming to a dinner party! (I suggested Trader Joes and a new pot for the rice he's cooking)

I guess being obnoxious about what you're eating at parties CAN make a difference.

When they are kittens they paw and knead their Mum's boobies ( ) to help her milk come in

Worcestershire sauce has been discussed here a few times. The Lea & Perrins sold in Canada is made here by E. D. Smith under license, and contains malt vinegar. The one sold in the US is gluten free, but not the one available in Canada.

It has been reported that 'Wizard' brand, made by Edward and Sons is available in some stores in Canada, but I have never seen it. It is an organic product, so you might find it in specialty stores.

Gravy and shortbread updates will follow.

Mygawd...I suppose it's okay for little animals such as cats to find stimulation in such a way, but you wouldn't want to see any big creatures partaking in such a way on blankets...or backsides.

...Like our yeti... :o

Is this part of large, bipedal creature habitual behavior?! Hell, I'm putting away my fleecy blankets!

Thanks, Peter! That takes care of the W. Sauce. Now, I've got some dog food ingredient questions that I willl sneakily frame into a silly post a bit later. Just a friendly warning...

 OMG - did I tell you about my mom's um, very RANDY kitten? good Lord.....Georgie is about 8 months old....she had him neutered at whatever age you're supposed to - - but, one of his testicles had not descended, and so remained inside. GOOD GAWD.......he was exhibiting his, er, very aroused state of behavior by means of: raping the other two cats that live there  and also by "finding stimulation" on all sorts of inanimate objects......the tv control, every kind of blanket, my mom's forearm, whatever.

so.......the vet did finally perform surgery to, fully neuter the poor devil.....and now he is quite a bit more manageable.

But sometimes......it did get quite funny.....but also could be quite gross - I"ll spare you the details :lol:

Helloooo Sillies!!! It's me! Janet! Remember me???

I have been lost in rural Virginia for several days now. I had about 11 pages of reading to do before I posted and I am still on a sllllooooowww server. . . but it's better than it was the other day. Don't even have any silliness to contribute. Just wanted to let you know that I am still "listening" so you best not be talkin' smack about me.

Shall I share my secret of NOT gaining wait this Christmas? . . . Have someone bring a stomach virus to the Christmas celebration!!! So far 5 out of 10 have had it (me included). Two may have escaped just in time. Two took it with them (unbeknownst - is that how you spell that?) to Mexico (I feel sorry for the passengers on that plane). So far my hubby and kids have remained unaffected, unattacked, uncontaminated. We drive back to Indiana tomorrow . . . maybe they are saving it for the car ride.

I am really looking forward to getting back to my own home/bed/kitchen and I'm sure Tom can relate.

Peter, I posted on your gravy thread . . . I'm sure you followed my advice as the gravy was fantastic here this year. And more importantly I'm sure you didn't follow Sarah's hot jello gravy recipe. I noticed that Sarah has not been posting. Has she been lost in the postChristmas sale frenzy?

Peter . . . fair warning . . . I'm working on some questions for you, too. But let's start with this one:

If a woodchuck could chuck wood, How much wood would a woodchuck chuck? And is it Ash, Cherry, Oak, or Pine?

I will have to reread and post some comments when I get home. Couldn't even check the links as this system is unbearably slow.

Susie- I am so sorry I just got home. I had to do some Christmas shopping, we are celebrating with my family tomorrow and I needed to finish their shopping.

I would suggest getting any of the cold iced teas, they have green, black and passion fruit. Ask for the iced tea shaken lemonade and for it to be sweetened. I always get the black tea and John loves the passion fruit.

Hey everyone! We be crowning a new queen soon!

Almoooooooost caught up .. ...

On to the W.Sauce!!!!!!!!!!!

Dad spent some early yrs in the States' very own Wooster, Worcester Mass.

But somehow, the unanimously agreed-upon pronounciation of w.sauce, where *I* grew up, was

**********wore-stir-shear********

Sure, only 2 out of 3 are wool-related . . .. . . .. .so far.

<pssst!>

<looks around>

I'm working on a cotton candy & milkshake combo. My woolstir trademark application is pending.

(I'm switching to woooster-shear!!)

What are you .. ..H perfectionists.... .. . taunting the Mad PMer??

Emily,

Have you ever considered the origin of Lye <not the town> to have been more of an ancestral nickname, boUrne <not the ultimatum> of an ability to brandish an oh-so-caustic wit at will <not the cat> ?

Peter has all the facts?

Here's a 2-part question I need answers to. (Ack! Isn't 'to which I need answers' a bit long-winded?)

All too regularly, in the states, I see/hear minor attempts at humoUr, which start or end w/ the phrase "Only in America".

1) Do the majority of members of the UN Security Council have their own national versions of this phrase w/ humourous intent?

2) Does most of N. America think this is inclusive or just wrong?

That and my nutritionist also said that drinking cider is one of the worst drink choices for me, given that I have candida overgrowth.  She said the combination of the alcohol and sugar would be very likely to worsen my candida problem.  She suggested that if I drink, I go for clear vodka, either neat or with a splash of cranberry.   So in summary, I am giving ciders a rest.  Whether it's a gluten risk or sugars and yeast overgrowth, its just not worth it.

Thank you for the information ill will definitely bring it into practice .

While plain, pure tea leaves (black, green, or white) are naturally gluten-free, the issue often lies not with the tea itself but with other ingredients or processing. Many flavored teas use barley malt or other gluten-containing grains as a flavoring agent, which would be clearly listed on the ingredient label. Cross-contamination is another possibility, either in the facility where the tea is processed or, surprisingly, from the tea bag material itself—some tea bags are sealed with a wheat-based glue. Furthermore, it's important to consider that your reaction could be to other substances in tea, such as high levels of tannins, which can be hard on the stomach, or to natural histamines or other compounds that can cause a non-celiac immune response. The best way to investigate is to carefully read labels for hidden ingredients, try switching to a certified gluten-free tea brand that uses whole leaf or pyramid-style bags, and see if the reaction persists.

This is a challenging and confusing situation. The combination of a positive EMA—which is a highly specific marker rarely yielding false positives—alongside strongly elevated TTG on two separate occasions, years apart, is profoundly suggestive of celiac disease, even in the absence of biopsy damage. This pattern strongly aligns with what is known as "potential celiac disease," where the immune system is clearly activated, but intestinal damage has not yet become visible under the microscope. Your concern about the long-term risk of continued gluten consumption is valid, especially given your family's experience with the consequences of delayed diagnosis. Since your daughter is now at an age where her buy-in is essential for a gluten-free lifestyle, obtaining a definitive answer is crucial for her long-term adherence and health. Given that she is asymptomatic yet serologically positive, a third biopsy now, after a proper 12-week challenge, offers the best chance to capture any microscopic damage that may have developed, providing the concrete evidence needed to justify the dietary change. This isn't about wanting her to have celiac; it's about wanting to prevent the insidious damage that can occur while waiting for symptoms to appear, and ultimately giving her the unambiguous "why" she needs to accept and commit to the necessary treatment. This article might be helpful. It breaks down each type of test, and what a positive results means in terms of the probability that you might have celiac disease. One test that always needs to be done is the IgA Levels/Deficiency Test (often called "Total IGA") because some people are naturally IGA deficient, and if this is the case, then certain blood tests for celiac disease might be false-negative, and other types of tests need to be done to make an accurate diagnosis. The article includes the "Mayo Clinic Protocol," which is the best overall protocol for results to be ~98% accurate.
    • Scott Adams
Welcome to the community! Generally, for a gluten challenge before celiac disease blood tests, Tylenol (acetaminophen) is considered safe and should not interfere with your antibody results. The medications you typically need to avoid are those like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) that can cause intestinal irritation, which could potentially complicate the interpretation of an endoscopy if you were to have one. However, it is absolutely crucial that you confirm this with either your gastroenterologist or your surgeon before your procedure. They know the specifics of your case and can give you the definitive green light, ensuring your surgery is comfortable and your celiac testing remains accurate. Best of luck with your surgery tomorrow
