That is very interesting--you should start a thread on it. :)

If an argument breaks out, I had nothing to do with it

Actually, I think that LI doesn't involve an immune response--it's an enzyme that's lacking to digest the dairy properly.

Yeah that is what I was thinking too. The lack of enzyme causes the lactose to not be broken down and its presence causes water to be drawn into the intestine and the oh so fun consequences of that. But really all I know is that I can have small amounts of dairy now and that makes me VERY happy!!!

Anyone having pancakes today? On fat Tuesday my mom used to bake a little plastic baby into a cake and we'd have our relatives over for a little party and whoever (or is it whomever Emily??) had the baby in their piece of cake got a prize! That was one of my favoUrite traditions. I think next year I'm going to do that -- with a gluten-free cake of couse.

Happy Mardi Gras everyone!

Here's another serious question . . . are your symptoms for consuming dairy the same as gluten? how 'bout trace amounts?

Mine were totally different.

:o what? who? where? What distillery? OMG, this is HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will this so-called absinthe have phaeries? Or allow us to SEE the phaeries?

The article DID give brief mention of their phutile ephphorts to distill a phuture phaerie-phree product for the phaerie-intolerant. ;)

www.stgeorgespirits.com

Wait! What the .. . . ..can't find anything on absinthe there but googling absinthe & "st george" has 12k+ results.

Saw a second blurb in the paper announcing that their second batch is out now. Small batches so who knows who sells it, but 1st article named a restaurant/bar that has it for $18/glass.

And it's right by my bank!!!!

Hmmmmmm how to combine the drudgery of banking w/ experimental intoxication. (Ok yes, not the most difficult task . .. ..can safely proceed sans flowchart, I admit)

Heehee I DO know which I'd do FIRST!!!!!:lol:

Amanda, waiting for winter, did you say? Well then what was all this talk of heinous roads, driving on ice, snow......all of that. Was that imaginary? Were you lying to us?

Yeah! No S***!!!!! :o:blink:

Weird polarized weather here on Super Sunday, btw. Noon-ish I'm getting HAILED on at WhF & an hour later we're out shooting hoops w/ nary a drop, tho it'd been mostly, albeit sporadically, raining & sprinkling all morning.

Pancakes do sound good, Pamela's pancake mix makes the most airy, light, fluffy spheres of pancake goodness :D but due to buttermilk powder I cannot indulge :(.

What, we are suppose to hide a plastic baby in them??

Indeed, how DOES the wee plastic baby get baked into a cake (not pancakes, Silly Julie! :P although 'tis an interesting idea - may be harder to hide, however) and not melt into a plasticene, amorphic blob of toxic goo?

Hee Hee :D

Q. What does HMO stand for?

A. This is actually a variation of the phrase , "HEY MOE " Its roots go back

to a concept pioneered by Moe of the Three Stooges, who discovered that a

patient could be made to forget the pain in his foot if he was poked hard

enough in the eye .

Q . I just joined an HMO. How difficult will it be to choose the doctor I

want?

A. Just slightly more difficult than choosing your parents. Your insurer

will provide you with a book listing all the doctors in the plan. The

doctors basically fall into two categories: those who are no longer

accepting new patients, and those who will see you but are no longer

participating in the plan. But don't worry, the remaining doctor who is

still in the plan and accepting new patients has an office just a half-day's

drive away and a diploma from a th ird world country.

Q. Do all diagnostic procedures require pre-certification?

A. No. Only those you need.

Q. Can I get coverage for my pre-existing conditions?

A. Certainly, as long as they don't require any treatment.

Q. What happens if I want to try alternative forms of medicine?

A. You'll need to find alternative forms of payment.

Q . My pharmacy plan only covers generic drugs, but I need the name brand.

I tried the generic medication, but it gave me a stomach ache.

What should I do?

A. Poke yourself in the eye.

Q. What if I'm away from home and I get sick?

A . You really shouldn't do that.

Q. I think I need to see a specialist, but my doctor insists he can handle

my problem. Can a general practitioner really perform a heart transplant

right in his/her office?

A. Hard to say, but considering that all you're risking is th e $20

co-payment, there's no harm in giving it a shot

Q . Will health care be different in the next decade?

A. No, but if you call right now, you might get an appointment by then.

To Your Good Health (because as you'll need it!)

I'm not sure how my mom did it -- never asked. I guess I'll have to figure that out before next year. I'm thinking maybe it was stuck in the cake after baking and before icing.

Actually, I think I remember her putting the baby in the cake before cooking and it never melted. I'm not sure how . . . the magic of mardi gras I guess. ;)

Oh ok! Thanks for clearing that up.

I think every culture has some kind of tradition, er custom, of hiding things in food, don't they?

I have heard of things like hiding coins, and a whole almond, if you get that piece that has the hidden item in it you have good luck or something.

Actually I'd like to point out that chronic inflammation anywhere is associated with an incresed risk of cancer. So if you eat dairy and it gives you intestinal troubles, you might want to assume that there is some associated inflammation with it.

Yep, I was wondering the same thing. Lactose intolerance = no worries if you indulge? Sounds too good to be true....

Enough! Back to SILLY!....

Ah oui  ...silly me......but what's it all about??......just a carnival???

Well not JUST a carnival, silly one. 'Tis the hugest religious celebration in the Catholic and Episcopal churches. I don't know all the history behind it - - but this is the day before the Lenten season, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, so everyone parties, and certainly moreso in certain communities. New Orleans is the most famous Mardi Gras celebration in the states, and of course Brazil has a huge carnival. Lots of pagan revelry/debauchery - the day has shifted quite a bit from its original intent and now, girls show their breasts in N. Orleans in the giant bacchanal parade in exchange for those cheap sparkly beads.<Jesus weeps over that, I am pretty sure  >

In the true tradition - and 'tis quite lovely, the whole season, if followed appropriately - one begins the period of lent and mourning over Christ's death in this period of time from Ash Wednesday until Easter, when rejoicing begins.

And now everybody just picks something they're "giving up for Lent...." My nieces picked SODA last year (pop, cokes, soft drinks, what are we calling them now?)......

That's all I got.

CAT DIARY

Day 983 of my captivity.

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape.

In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Bastards!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches.

The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously an idiot.

I'd go with a vodka tonic, but that's just me😉
    • Rejoicephd
That and my nutritionist also said that drinking cider is one of the worst drink choices for me, given that I have candida overgrowth.  She said the combination of the alcohol and sugar would be very likely to worsen my candida problem.  She suggested that if I drink, I go for clear vodka, either neat or with a splash of cranberry.   So in summary, I am giving ciders a rest.  Whether it's a gluten risk or sugars and yeast overgrowth, its just not worth it.

While plain, pure tea leaves (black, green, or white) are naturally gluten-free, the issue often lies not with the tea itself but with other ingredients or processing. Many flavored teas use barley malt or other gluten-containing grains as a flavoring agent, which would be clearly listed on the ingredient label. Cross-contamination is another possibility, either in the facility where the tea is processed or, surprisingly, from the tea bag material itself—some tea bags are sealed with a wheat-based glue. Furthermore, it's important to consider that your reaction could be to other substances in tea, such as high levels of tannins, which can be hard on the stomach, or to natural histamines or other compounds that can cause a non-celiac immune response. The best way to investigate is to carefully read labels for hidden ingredients, try switching to a certified gluten-free tea brand that uses whole leaf or pyramid-style bags, and see if the reaction persists.
    • Scott Adams
This is a challenging and confusing situation. The combination of a positive EMA—which is a highly specific marker rarely yielding false positives—alongside strongly elevated TTG on two separate occasions, years apart, is profoundly suggestive of celiac disease, even in the absence of biopsy damage. This pattern strongly aligns with what is known as "potential celiac disease," where the immune system is clearly activated, but intestinal damage has not yet become visible under the microscope. Your concern about the long-term risk of continued gluten consumption is valid, especially given your family's experience with the consequences of delayed diagnosis. Since your daughter is now at an age where her buy-in is essential for a gluten-free lifestyle, obtaining a definitive answer is crucial for her long-term adherence and health. Given that she is asymptomatic yet serologically positive, a third biopsy now, after a proper 12-week challenge, offers the best chance to capture any microscopic damage that may have developed, providing the concrete evidence needed to justify the dietary change. This isn't about wanting her to have celiac; it's about wanting to prevent the insidious damage that can occur while waiting for symptoms to appear, and ultimately giving her the unambiguous "why" she needs to accept and commit to the necessary treatment. This article might be helpful. It breaks down each type of test, and what a positive results means in terms of the probability that you might have celiac disease. One test that always needs to be done is the IgA Levels/Deficiency Test (often called "Total IGA") because some people are naturally IGA deficient, and if this is the case, then certain blood tests for celiac disease might be false-negative, and other types of tests need to be done to make an accurate diagnosis. The article includes the "Mayo Clinic Protocol," which is the best overall protocol for results to be ~98% accurate.
