Hallo Sillies- I am laughing at all the new absinthian avatars and toilette chairs!!!!!!!!!! NICE!!!!!!!!!

If Bev can fit me into her busy schedule . . . we will be in Boxford from the 5th through the 11th or 12th. We will have some mandatory Bostonian sight-seeing to perform, but we're flexible at this point.

Yes- yes. Come visit!!!!!! I live 2 towns away!

And next year, we are talking about heading out to Washington to see my brother (West Richland) and spend a little time in Seattle . . . Jess's neck of the woods but apparently (based on her profile) she lives in the middle of Puget Sound so we might have to rent a boat.

Can I come? I've always wanted to live in Puget Sound (well, on an island in..... :P )

OMG - he said Chowchilla. :

Absolutely NO confuzzlement here. Do not forget where you are, Sarah...this is, after all, the land of Penis Slings and Anal Glands.... :o:lol:

Welp, I'm back from the doctor. The problems with my eye are directly related to the sinus infection, which I kind of figured since- 1) It didn't get any better on the pink eye meds, and 2) It hadn't spread to my other eye or to anyone else in the house.

She did lots of hmmm'ing and uh-huh'ing while examining various facial orifices... noted that the amoxy had done nothing... and had her new colleague come in to look at me and ask a zillion questions... They consulted for a few minutes, flipping through my (5 pound) chart... and said...

You have quite a history of being susceptible to infection and unresponsive to antibiotics. You really... really... really... need to quit smoking. And go off dairy. You're already gluten-free, you can handle quitting dairy, too.

Holy flaming panic attack, Batman!!!!!!!!

I have been with this doctor for many years, I love and respect her very much. I like her new colleague, too. But I don't know how I'm gonna do this, especially the smoking!!!

They also put me on 2 weeks of doxycycline. Kind of seemed to be a last ditch effort before switching to the big guns (i.e. the really expensive abx.) Neither of them seemed to think the doxy would do much good, but want to try it just in case.

I may have trouble bringing the phunny for a while.

OK, OK, I fixed my caption . . .succumbing to the peer pressure . . . everyone else was doing it . . .

Hey Tom, you've got a typo in your caption, spinach in your teeth, your zipper's down, there's toilet paper stuck to the bottom of your shoe, and your mascara is smudge . . . WAIT!!! WHAT??!!??:lol:

2 things .. .no, 3 things .. ..no .. ..2 things

1) I recommend NOT replacing dairy w/ soy products!

I use Pacific brand Hazelnut milk for cereal. Mmmmmm

There are all sorts of goat cheeses that could be fine. I love the basic chevre, but some feta, gouda, & mozzarella have been fan-f******-tastic and more closely resemble, or, really I can safely say exCEED, the cow versions.

2) We DO know we should quit smoking. :(

I get a weird slight-panic feeling in my chest when I think of going w/out. I hate how so many situations won't feel right w/out lighting up.

It's just GOTTA be done .. . .. .and I'm closer to ready all the time.

Yeah, the more I read about soy, the less I want it.

I will definitely try the hazelnut milk! I gotta have my Erewhon Brown Rice and Berries. And now Rice Chex is gluten-free, yay!

For the mozzarella... will it say "goat mozzarella" or something? I assume you can get this at Whole Foods? Goat cheese still has casein, right? But it's got less, or something? Or a slightly different kind?

I guess I'll go strictly dairy-free for awhile, and see what happens. But if it's going to be long term, I'm definitely going to be looking at some alternatives. No more mac and cheese. :( And chocolate! God help me.

The cigarettes, yeah... *sigh* I had actually run out when I went to my appt. So I was like, should I buy any more? I had to go to the store to get some odds and ends, was just about to check out, was having a nic fit, and nearly hyperventilated at the thought of not having a cigarette when I got out of the store. (I know how pathetic that is, but it's the truth.) So I did buy ONE pack, decided to give myself that long to get used to the idea, and when it's gone... it's gone.

Yeah, I'm kinda depressed about it right now.

Sarah . . . enjoy life chocolate chips and kinni-toos . . . for your choc fix.

Bless you! I didn't know about the chips, and totally forgot that K-toos (as they are affectionately called in my house ;) ) are dairy free! Whew, there's something at least.

jerseyangel Proficient

The Enjoy Life Chips are fabulous! I also love their Mambo Trail Mix. And the Snickerdoodles. :P

I'm dairy free, also, and use Pacific Foods Almond and Rice milks. The Vanilla Almond makes delicious chocolate and butterscotch pudding (I use Jello cook and serve). I have a recipe that I came up with for scalloped potatoes using the Plain Rice milk-- let me know if you want it.

Darn210 Enthusiast

And don't forget, Hershey's Cocoa (although, as a forum, we're kind of anti-Hershey's right now . . . so wear a disguise . . . )

Oh and cigarettes . . . do they still make those candy ones? . . . Probably not . . . uber politically incorrect . . .

jerseyangel Proficient

I use Nestle's cocoa--one of my favorite chocolate fixes is Nestle's Cocoa, sugar in the raw and Vanilla Almond milk in a mug, microwaved 2 minutes. Yum :P

Thank’s for addressing the issue of mushrooms.  I was under the impression that only wild mushrooms were gluten-free.  Have been avoiding cultivated mushrooms for years. Also, the issue of smoked food was informative.  In France last year, where there is hardly any prepared take-out food that is gluten-free, I tried smoked chicken.  Major mistake!

my IGG is 815 IGA 203  but tTG-Iga is   <0.4!!!!!!!!!!!!!   oh my god- 13 days of agony and the test is negative?  I don't even know what to do next. There zero doubt in my mind that I have an issue with wheat and probably more so with gluten as symptoms are dramatically worse the more gluten a product has   I am going to write up the history of my issues for the past few years and start a food/symptom diary to bring with me to the GI doctor in March.   I googled like crazy to try to find out what other things might cause these symptoms and the only thing that truly fits besides celiac is NCGS   but I guess there are some other things I maybe should be tested for ...? like SIBO?   I will continue to eliminate any foods that cause me distress (as I have been doing for the past couple of years) and try to keep a record. Can anyone recommend an app or some form or something that would simplify this? I have a very full and busy life and taking the time to write out each symptom name in full would be tedious and time consuming- some sort of page with columns to check off would be ideal. I am not at all tech savvy so that's not something I can make myself ... I'm hoping there's some thing out there that I can just download and print out   do I give up on testing for celiac with such a low number? I am 70 yrs old I have been almost completely off gluten for the most part for about 2 yrs. I had a meal of vital wheat gluten vegan roast,  rolls and stuffing made from home baked bread and an apple pie- and had the worst pain and gas and bloating and odd rumblings in my gut etc - almost went to the ER it was so bad. I was thinking, since I'm spilling a lot of calcium in my urine, that perhaps this was a kidney stone (never had one before but there's always that first time, right?)    Saw my endo on Jan 20th and after hearing the story about the symptoms from eating that holiday meal, she suggested doing a gluten challenge. She said 2 weeks was fine- she said stopping it in the middle if symptoms got bad was fine- In the meantime I'd read that 2 weeks was not enough- called and argued with the nurse about this, but ultimately decided to stop the gluten on the 13th day and get the test done because I was in too much pain and almost suicidal and knew I could not continue.   so.............. that's where I am now I have had no bread since Sunday. I did have some rolled oats today and had some gas and bloating afterwards I did have some wheat germ in a smoothie on Tuesday and had a stomach ache later that night.   but overall I feel so much better! all the joint pain is gone! the nausea is gone. The stomach pain and gas and bloating are going away. Still a bit gassy but no more of that horrible odor. wow, that would clear a room if I was out in public!  I see a GI nurse March 4th  I hope she'll be able to help sort this out! can you think of what my next steps might be?

      Thanks for the reply.

What you’re describing is actually very common, and unfortunately the timing of the biopsy likely explains the confusion. Yes, it is absolutely possible for the small intestine to heal enough in three months on a strict gluten-free diet to produce a normal or near-normal biopsy, especially when damage was mild to begin with. In contrast, celiac antibodies can stay elevated for many months or even years after gluten removal, so persistently high antibody levels alongside the celiac genes and clear nutrient deficiencies strongly point to celiac disease, even if you don’t feel symptoms. Many people with celiac are asymptomatic but still develop iron and vitamin deficiencies and silent intestinal damage. The lack of immediate symptoms makes it harder emotionally, but it doesn’t mean gluten isn’t harming you. Most specialists would consider this a case of celiac disease with a false-negative biopsy due to early healing rather than “something else,” and staying consistently gluten-free is what protects you long-term—even when your body doesn’t protest right away.
    • Scott Adams
Yes, I meant if you had celiac disease but went gluten-free before screening, your results would end up false-negative. As @trents mentioned, this can also happen when a total IGA test isn't done.
