Actually, the Ripper is absolutely fascinated with languages, is taking both French and Spanish at school, and in response to all of the frustrating rules and exceptions to said rules, he has been working on the development of a new language.

Can't figure out how this relates to All Things Green.

Feel free to sprinkle your posts w/ Ripperian :D

...but original Greek feta cheese is lush :P

Mmmm yes!!!! ALL Feta was goat for centuries.

Sarah - I forgot to add my 2cents on caseins. Oops!

I've seen talk of vast differences in the ratios of types of caseins, and that goat casein is a smaller molecule in the first place - apparently different enough that it's no problem for many of us cow CFers.

But of course, when first starting dairy-free, no use in possibly messing it up w/ experiments.

Breaking the psychological habit is the much harder part (the patches take care of the physical withdrawal)

Ever thought about hypnosis to break the habit???

Oh Lord  .....listen to me!! .....sound like one of them awful bloomin' patronising docs on the tv

<sorry>

Nahhhhhhhh .. . .. You just sound encouraging! :)

I'm planning on hypnosis. Also maybe this ear-thing my acupuncturist does. And maybe herbs from her. And maybe Lame Advertisement - old girlfriend Teresa recently quit w/ that.

Ptaum!! You've been looking at Jack's new vocabulary page!

Is that Swahili? Zulu? Dinka?

Heehee

Tagalog (Filipino)

Thai

Bahasa Indonesia

I learned a decent amount of Tagalog & Indonesian in my old life of business trips.

Thai is HARD!!!!

My lil bro had been to Indonesia & told me it was easy & I thought "wth?? How is that possible?" but it kinda is.

On 2nd or 3rd trip I wrote him a postcard from there in Indo w/out needing to look anything up. Not just "weather's fine" either!

It's the candiru fish....sit down for this one:

BTW, Tom, I meant to reply to you earlier and got distracted...

I think I am going to quit Monday morning. I know I shouldn't put it off like that, but the kids will be back in school, and I'll have the weekend to rest up a little.

Frame of mind is THE most important thing. Your plan sounds good. :)

OMG- avatar madness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That link was the first listing. The second listing led me to a little known thread called "Tickle Me Elbow" with a post from Ptaum!!!:lol::lol:

Now THAT is scary!!!!!!!!

This reminds me of something. Jack's teacher is putting together a big lesson plan for next month--it will involve the history, geography and science of absinthe. It is a section on the Guinea worm, a fascinating, but stomach-turning, parasite that resides in fetid water in parts of Africa and South America. We'll be creating a couple of big posters and slide shows, detailing how it enters the human body, and regrettably, how it leaves.... So, a warning....soon I may be imparting my new-found wisdom on this gross-me-out-the-door-but-its-kinda-cool subject. Okay, you've been warned.

:P

HOLY HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My mountain is on fire! There's a freaking brush fire and one of the stations said 75 acres have burned since last night. This smoke, OMG, is not doing good things for me right now.

Oh sarah- keep us posted. That is scary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good to know that Armenian is right up there with Klingon in terms of popular obscure languages to know.

Yes, I second this. Actually, the Ripper is absolutely fascinated with languages, is taking both French and Spanish at school, and in response to all of the frustrating rules and exceptions to said rules, he has been working on the development of a new language. I will check out what he's got so far....perhaps we can begin to work it into our posts. He's got about five pages of vocabulary done (all the way to the letter "H", I believe), but when I glanced at the words he was creating last month, I was struck by how very much they reflect just the linguistic needs of a 10 year-old. A smattering:

Bum--bummo

Computer--comptutro

Cookie-Cuquo

Dog--canino

Kick--Kica

Punch--Punca

No superfluous words like "house", "food" or "live".......

OMG- too cute. When I took Spanish in high school we used to sit around outside of class and conjugate dirty words like F*^ck (wherein I will substitute hump):

yo humpo nosotros humpamos

tu humpes vosotros humpais

ud uds humpen

el

ella humpa

Nosotros always came out the best    I'm so sure that our Spanish teacher would have been VERY proud!!!!!!!

There was an episode of Grey's Anatomy that featured this. Gross!

OMG- the penis fish is beyond disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EFT is a form of acupressure that I have recommended to so many people for SO many things--very effective for addictions. You can administer it to yourself. I downloaded the free 80 page manual about a year ago.....so the price is right, too:

Sarah, I see you reading. How are things going with the fire?

In consideration of all this, setting a firm date of Monday makes sense. Monday is the day. Plan for it, and be ready for Monday's change. Plan to do things to keep yourself busy. Plan to avoid things that are associative with a smoke. For me, it was beverages. A coffee and a cigarette. Something stronger (alcoholic) and a smoke. By doing something else in the first few days, I avoided the situation where I would just automatically light up. Monday is the day. :)

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking! If I can rest up a little over the weekend, I'll feel up to doing more next week. If I can stay as busy as possible, it'll be better.

The fire is pretty bad. The wind really kicked up this afternoon. It's pretty well out of control and it jumped all the fire lines they spent all morning digging. They had to pull a few crews out of one spot this afternoon, they almost got trapped by the fires.

There is a wide dirt road on the very top of the mountain, where there are some tv and radio towers, the 911 tower, etc. All the towers are in direct danger, but so far that dirt road is keeping the fire from coming down our side of the mountain. If it jumps that road, I'm gonna have some wicked night pictures to show you guys. Speaking of which, if you want to see pics, google "Sauratown Mountain fire" (It'll probably look puny to you Californians :P )

I kept all the windows closed and the a/c on today (It was almost 80 here today,) and the smoke still isn't too bad at my house. We'll take it one day at a time as far as the smoke goes... I went by my mom's and it's not much better over there. She's several miles on the other side of the mountain, but the wind has been blowing it her way. :(

Ridgewalker Contributor

Bah... a sleepless night for me. Dunno if it's the new meds or what. How a person can be so tired, and unable to sleep is beyond me.

I just checked out my back window again... It looks like the fire did jump that dirt road, because I can see flames now instead of just the glow. It looks so eerie at night! And there are several emergency vehicles now on our side of the mountain, but all I can see are the flashing lights. It looks like they're just floating in mid air. Spooky.

I should go back to bed, but it's hard not to want to just sit in front of the window and watch. I am SUCH a terrible looky-loo. ;) I admit it. Half the reason I went by my mom's today was because I wanted to see what the mountain looked like on the other side.

Night-night. -_-

Morning Sillies! Friday Friday Friday

Hopefully I can join in today, I feel isolated from my sillies due to all the moving and chaos in the office. So my friday resolution today is to be on the forum as much as possible, without being caught. :) lol!

elye Community Regular

Morning, all!

Was thinking about you last night, Sarah. Hoping that there's just a lot of smoldering brush on that mountain, now.

Sarah, I see you reading.

[Apologies to all sillies for hijacking the thread (again) for something serious and important. ]

Hey, do not apologise for this!! It is SO important for one of us Sillies. Sarah, this is the best thing you could be doing...and hey, according to some, commercial cigarettes may have, along with all the other toxins widely known, GLUTEN in them. Yet another excellent reason!!..... :)

My feet are very tired and a little bit puffy-looking this morning. They feel like crap. So, I have come to the conclusion that my new shoes have, along with the fibreglass, polyfoam and other NASA materials, gluten in them, as well. <_<

Thank you for the information ill will definitely bring it into practice .
    • Scott Adams
While plain, pure tea leaves (black, green, or white) are naturally gluten-free, the issue often lies not with the tea itself but with other ingredients or processing. Many flavored teas use barley malt or other gluten-containing grains as a flavoring agent, which would be clearly listed on the ingredient label. Cross-contamination is another possibility, either in the facility where the tea is processed or, surprisingly, from the tea bag material itself—some tea bags are sealed with a wheat-based glue. Furthermore, it's important to consider that your reaction could be to other substances in tea, such as high levels of tannins, which can be hard on the stomach, or to natural histamines or other compounds that can cause a non-celiac immune response. The best way to investigate is to carefully read labels for hidden ingredients, try switching to a certified gluten-free tea brand that uses whole leaf or pyramid-style bags, and see if the reaction persists.
    • Scott Adams
This is a challenging and confusing situation. The combination of a positive EMA—which is a highly specific marker rarely yielding false positives—alongside strongly elevated TTG on two separate occasions, years apart, is profoundly suggestive of celiac disease, even in the absence of biopsy damage. This pattern strongly aligns with what is known as "potential celiac disease," where the immune system is clearly activated, but intestinal damage has not yet become visible under the microscope. Your concern about the long-term risk of continued gluten consumption is valid, especially given your family's experience with the consequences of delayed diagnosis. Since your daughter is now at an age where her buy-in is essential for a gluten-free lifestyle, obtaining a definitive answer is crucial for her long-term adherence and health. Given that she is asymptomatic yet serologically positive, a third biopsy now, after a proper 12-week challenge, offers the best chance to capture any microscopic damage that may have developed, providing the concrete evidence needed to justify the dietary change. This isn't about wanting her to have celiac; it's about wanting to prevent the insidious damage that can occur while waiting for symptoms to appear, and ultimately giving her the unambiguous "why" she needs to accept and commit to the necessary treatment. This article might be helpful. It breaks down each type of test, and what a positive results means in terms of the probability that you might have celiac disease. One test that always needs to be done is the IgA Levels/Deficiency Test (often called "Total IGA") because some people are naturally IGA deficient, and if this is the case, then certain blood tests for celiac disease might be false-negative, and other types of tests need to be done to make an accurate diagnosis. The article includes the "Mayo Clinic Protocol," which is the best overall protocol for results to be ~98% accurate.
    • Scott Adams
Welcome to the community! Generally, for a gluten challenge before celiac disease blood tests, Tylenol (acetaminophen) is considered safe and should not interfere with your antibody results. The medications you typically need to avoid are those like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) that can cause intestinal irritation, which could potentially complicate the interpretation of an endoscopy if you were to have one. However, it is absolutely crucial that you confirm this with either your gastroenterologist or your surgeon before your procedure. They know the specifics of your case and can give you the definitive green light, ensuring your surgery is comfortable and your celiac testing remains accurate. Best of luck with your surgery tomorrow
    • Xravith
Thank you for the advice. I’ve actually never checked for nutritional deficiencies, but for as long as I can remember, I’ve always taken vitamin and mineral supplements — otherwise my symptoms get worse. This week I stopped eating gluten to confirm whether my symptoms are really caused by it. Starting next week, I’ll reintroduce gluten — it’s sad to go back to how I was before — but at least I’ll be able to take the necessary tests properly. I think the diagnostic process will be long, but at least I’m happy that I finally decided to address this doubt I’ve had for years.
