I have to say Ptaum, that before you pointed it out (during the previous CeliacS conversation . . . if you want, I'll go back and quote it), I don't think I ever paid too much attention to someone typing/saying CeliacS. Now when I see/hear it, it's like fingernails on a chalk board . . . thanks ever-so-much for the enlightenment.

:D

There's just SO MUCH of it .. . ..AGHHHHH!!

This time it wasn't just because it was in the acct name, but that the post said it 2 or 3 more times, and the celiac in question had just joined the week before.

I also have a gnack for remembering stuff that didn't even happen.

<chuckle chuckle>

Well! I hope you slept well, Ptaum,

I most certainly DID sleep quite well, thank you.

Sarah, no smoking mountain in addition to its absence in your hand, mouth & lungs??

Today's the Las Vegas wedding! Of course, hoping Kissey2 catches all of the marital projectiles...

Hehehehe the nuptials were high noon Sunday :P

Bah! Bien sur.......I knew this.....

So, my mom's eightieth birthday is next week, and we've long been talking about a big surprise party for her. Well, last week when I had the family over for dinner, she said about five times, "I do NOT want any party!! I mean it! Nothing! Just call me and say Happy Birthday". So we told her we were going to have a birthday party for her, and simply not invite her. She seemed quite happy with that, failing to sense the ridiculousness of such a plan.

...This is my life...... <_<

Where is everyone? Patti? Nikki? Sarah? And we haven't heard from Alex lately...I think about Colin all the time, and I'm dying to hear how he's doing...

Hi Emily :)

I'm here--in and out. We had a busy weekend and today I'm cleaning and dealing with about a ton of laundry

I did come on and read, though, so I'm up on everything sillie :D So funny about your mom's birthday. She'll have fun once she's there with everyone--you are doing a party, right?

My dad turns 80 next week and my sister and I are giving a surprise party for him at her house on Saturday. We'll drive up Saturday morning and hopefully get there by noon (it's about a 4 hour drive). We will spend the night there and spend Sunday afternoon with Mark's mom, sister and aunt before driving home Sunday night.

It should be fun--we expect about 25 people, several of which I haven't seen in a while. I hope my other sister (the one with the depression) will come. With her, we really won't know until that night--she'll either be there, or she won't. :(

It seems as though many of us have parents born in April.....could this be the common thread that binds us? Emily- Your mom...too funny. My dad turns 78 April 19th and he'd say the SAME thing!!!!!!!!

Patti- Didn't know your sister was still the thick of it :( That makes me sad.:( It's a tough time of year.........

Hehe my Dad's Bday is Apr 4th!! :D

Hi Sillies...I am writing from my bed where I am sitting home sick in my Pj's. I was ready to go to work but I didnt get there...I was just not feeling well enough to go. So I napped until 11 and now I am just hanging out in bed surfing the net...

Sounds like a good plan. Feel better soon! <that's an order .. .oh damn .. . ..my authority was usurped pages ago>

Patti, such a shame about your sister .. . .. :(

Am I recalling correctly that she doesn't believe diet can do that and gluten-free isn't worth a shot?

Yes!! I shall phone my mother this evening, tell her it's all solved...My brother, sister and I will continue to organise a big eightieth birthday party, only it will be for PATTI'S DAD, and she really should come. It's perfect!! Patti, what is your dad's name? I'll need it for the cake. And what size shirt/pants/socks is he? My mom may wish to pick him up something...

Can I have a party for Patti's dad too?? It'll be like the synchronized "lights out" event. We'll have an international Patti/Emily parental unit party.

I love it. My mom wanted NO Happy Birthday stuff from anyone in the family, and now there's a whole bandwagon..."Uh, Mom....many, many peoply are celebrating your eightieth today, kind of like the simultaneous lights-out-around-the-world thing"...:lol:

Oh, man...how many people do we know whose lives could completely turn around with this diet change? I lost count in my circle some time ago...sometimes it threatens to make me crazy with frustration!

Gee, it's been pretty quiet in Sillyville today.

Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well, Manda, hope you are better soon.

I hope Sarah is doing well, I haven't heard anything. She was last on the boards about 11 hours ago.

Parental birthdays, is it. None in April here. February and August, and for both of them, 80 has come and gone. But we can still all have a celebration of sorts on the seventh.

Another April Birthday! Another common thread amonst us Sillies

Thanks Tom, about my sister....yeah, she had a breakdown and was hospitalized last year for several weeks on two separate occasions. I have explained the Celiac link, sent up reams of articles and other information--and to no avail :(

The kicker (and something I can't believe I'm the only one in my family remembering) is that several years ago she saw a Kinesiologist who put her on a diet that omitted gluten among other things. She reported then that she felt the best she had ever felt. Slowly as she reintroduced other foods, she began this horrible spiral downward. She hates conventional doctors and won't seek testing--her husband is no help at all. I have appealed to him every way I know how. I've hit a brick wall....

It will feel a little akward if we see him this weekend--I was a bit pushy at one point. But at least I was trying to help. <_<

Hi, Susie!! :)

We're all living vicariously through you, and await with bated breath your Vegas stories. Three barfs? Well, you must start wif this.....

Well, I've been to Las Vegas twice, and it was pretty far out. My last visit was in 1993, and I understand it has just gotten further and further away from reality. The hotels just keep getting bigger and bigger. In 1993 we stayed at Harrah's and thought it was big, but at least three new properties more than twice the size were under construction. I've been to Reno a couple of times, and would much rather go there.

It sounds like you had an interesting and exciting time, Susie. You must tell us all about it.

Party next Monday! Oh, yeah! B)

Patti, our anniversaries are only 4 days apart! :D Brian's and my 8th anniversary is tomorrow. Yup, we got married on April Fool's Day. (I was destined to end up here with the sillies eventually. :P )

Weelllll, I did smoke a few cigarettes today. But only like a quarter of what what I normally would, if not less. Still working on it.

Welcome back Susie! Eek, on the barfing! What happened!?

Morning, Sillies!!

Happy Anniversary, Sarah! I was going to come on with some insane story about my dad being a Roman gladiator last night when we visited him, and seeing the yeti sitting in a McDonalds on our way home, and then proclaiming, "Ha!! April fools!!"

Then I realized that I do this kind of thing every day... <_<

We've been planning a trip there ever since we got back from Europe...our next "far destination"....We thought about this December, but the money just ain't there right now. Maybe in a couple of years. I just hate all this having to PAY for stuff....:rolleyes:

Thank’s for addressing the issue of mushrooms.  I was under the impression that only wild mushrooms were gluten-free.  Have been avoiding cultivated mushrooms for years. Also, the issue of smoked food was informative.  In France last year, where there is hardly any prepared take-out food that is gluten-free, I tried smoked chicken.  Major mistake!

my IGG is 815 IGA 203  but tTG-Iga is   <0.4!!!!!!!!!!!!!   oh my god- 13 days of agony and the test is negative?  I don't even know what to do next. There zero doubt in my mind that I have an issue with wheat and probably more so with gluten as symptoms are dramatically worse the more gluten a product has   I am going to write up the history of my issues for the past few years and start a food/symptom diary to bring with me to the GI doctor in March.   I googled like crazy to try to find out what other things might cause these symptoms and the only thing that truly fits besides celiac is NCGS   but I guess there are some other things I maybe should be tested for ...? like SIBO?   I will continue to eliminate any foods that cause me distress (as I have been doing for the past couple of years) and try to keep a record. Can anyone recommend an app or some form or something that would simplify this? I have a very full and busy life and taking the time to write out each symptom name in full would be tedious and time consuming- some sort of page with columns to check off would be ideal. I am not at all tech savvy so that's not something I can make myself ... I'm hoping there's some thing out there that I can just download and print out   do I give up on testing for celiac with such a low number? I am 70 yrs old I have been almost completely off gluten for the most part for about 2 yrs. I had a meal of vital wheat gluten vegan roast,  rolls and stuffing made from home baked bread and an apple pie- and had the worst pain and gas and bloating and odd rumblings in my gut etc - almost went to the ER it was so bad. I was thinking, since I'm spilling a lot of calcium in my urine, that perhaps this was a kidney stone (never had one before but there's always that first time, right?)    Saw my endo on Jan 20th and after hearing the story about the symptoms from eating that holiday meal, she suggested doing a gluten challenge. She said 2 weeks was fine- she said stopping it in the middle if symptoms got bad was fine- In the meantime I'd read that 2 weeks was not enough- called and argued with the nurse about this, but ultimately decided to stop the gluten on the 13th day and get the test done because I was in too much pain and almost suicidal and knew I could not continue.   so.............. that's where I am now I have had no bread since Sunday. I did have some rolled oats today and had some gas and bloating afterwards I did have some wheat germ in a smoothie on Tuesday and had a stomach ache later that night.   but overall I feel so much better! all the joint pain is gone! the nausea is gone. The stomach pain and gas and bloating are going away. Still a bit gassy but no more of that horrible odor. wow, that would clear a room if I was out in public!  I see a GI nurse March 4th  I hope she'll be able to help sort this out! can you think of what my next steps might be?

      Thanks for the reply.

What you’re describing is actually very common, and unfortunately the timing of the biopsy likely explains the confusion. Yes, it is absolutely possible for the small intestine to heal enough in three months on a strict gluten-free diet to produce a normal or near-normal biopsy, especially when damage was mild to begin with. In contrast, celiac antibodies can stay elevated for many months or even years after gluten removal, so persistently high antibody levels alongside the celiac genes and clear nutrient deficiencies strongly point to celiac disease, even if you don’t feel symptoms. Many people with celiac are asymptomatic but still develop iron and vitamin deficiencies and silent intestinal damage. The lack of immediate symptoms makes it harder emotionally, but it doesn’t mean gluten isn’t harming you. Most specialists would consider this a case of celiac disease with a false-negative biopsy due to early healing rather than “something else,” and staying consistently gluten-free is what protects you long-term—even when your body doesn’t protest right away.
    • Scott Adams
Yes, I meant if you had celiac disease but went gluten-free before screening, your results would end up false-negative. As @trents mentioned, this can also happen when a total IGA test isn't done.
