Would love to come Lisa! Don't really love oysters, but that isn't the point! Robotics team is hosting a First Lego League scrimmage - 150 grade school kids and thier families! And like Janet - if M has to work it, so do I. How much concessions do you buy for this?

I tried an oyster once, felt like an eyeball in my mouth.

   . . . Well, if I had my doubts about oysters before, I don't anymore. What an EYE-opening comparison.

Was that a rhetorical question? . . . or are you really looking for feedback? In which case, what hours are the event? And is everyone there for the entire time?

It was rhetorical but if you have some ideas, I would love to hear them! The kids in charge of the concessions want to have a bunch of things, but I'm trying to limit them to coffee, hot chocolate, juice, 1 diet soda, 1 caffienated soda, 1 non-caf soda, mini-muffin packages, granola bars, candy, chips (let me go look at the list & be back)

Hours are 7:30 am. to about 1 pm. Everyone is there the whole time except some parents or grandparents, might come and go. About 125-150 should be there most of the time. We have no way to cook anything other than plug it in like a coffee pot.

kareng Grand Master

This is the stuff they were asking for. I noticed the granola bars and those may have peanuts. He said only about 3 parents said they would bring stuff so I get to take a couple of kids to Costco and buy what we need. I am going to ask Costco what can be returned (unopened). I am thinking a few, simple items.

I'm also wondering why none of thier parents will do this?

"We would ask that you do not bring home baked goods. We have several participants with peanut allergies. If you would wish to bring home baked goods, please email C to check. Additionally, we would ask that you refrain from bringing peanut or nut products all together. Thank you!

What can you bring to the FLL Scrimmage in terms of food and supplies? (NO PEANUT/NUT PRODUCTS PLEASE!)*Check one or more options.

  • Baked Goods (Cookies, Brownies, etc.)

  • Soft Drinks (In Cans in large boxes)

  • Individually Packaged Candy

  • Juice Boxes/Pouches

  • Bottled Water

  • Coffee (pre-ground, in cans preferably)

  • Decaf Coffee (pre-ground, in cans preferably)

  • Hot Chocolate (in cans or individual packets)

  • Popcorn (Individual Packets unless someone can bring a popcorn maker)

  • Individually Packaged Chips and Snacks (In large boxes)

  • Individually Packaged Granola Bars (In Large Boxes)

  • Doughnuts (Please bring morning of event due to perishability)

  • Half and Half (Please bring morning of event due to perishability)

  • Milk (Please bring morning of event due to perishability)

  • Non-dairy creamer

  • Splenda/Sweet n Low (Sugar (Individual Packets or in Can)

  • Sugar (Individual Packets or in Can)

See? This is why I should run these things by the Psillies and get input! Perhaps, as it is a.m., we should have Mimosas and Bloody Marys?

We do completely packaged items with the exception of hotdogs (they are cooked/heated in a huge commercial-like crockpot thing - then transferred to a warmer). We're there from about 9 am until 4 pm. I would probably limit what you are offering . . . that's an awful lot of stuff to keep track of although you start earlier than us . . .

This is all we sell:

Hot Dogs w/Buns (bottles of ketchup, mustard, relish available)

Variety of prepackaged individual chips

Variety of Full Size Candy Bars

Bottled water, soda(diet coke, coke, sprite, root beer), gatorade (which was the first to go) . . . I don't think we were even asked for juice boxes.

(We sell nothing with any redeeming nutritional value ;) )

You defintely need the coffee. I would just have them use creamer and not worry about milk or half & half . . . or were you wanting milk for the kids? You know those parents will be feeding the kids breakfast before they come so I wouldn't stock up on a ton of breakfasty things.

Here's my number one suggestion: Get waaaaaayyyyy more ones/change than you think you will need. I can't tell you how many people bought their $1 bottle of water with a $20 bill. I had to go to a bank to get more change. Between what we started with, what we scrounged/begged from people who had change on them and what I went back to the bank for, We probably needed around $150 in ones. Now, at the end, we had loads . . . but in the heat of the battle, we were sweatin' it. (Murphy's Law says I will start with $150 in ones (and some 5's and 10's) and everyone will have correct change this year.)

Everything was priced in round dollars so it was a lot easier to make change. It was two adults and about four tweens running the stand.

Homemade stuff will never be OK for somebody with severe food allergies. You just can't trust it . . . and I know you know that. Just as long as there are some prepackaged options, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I know when we do anything like this with Skeeter, we just look over the selection and tell her what she can choose from and sometimes (to her delight) she gets to have cheetos and a rootbeer.

Costco will let you return anythng that is unopened . . . also lets you return open stuff if you are dissatisfied.

Alright guys, more wasp issues. This time i found one dead (left the container out overnight of what i had made soup in with a little juice in the bottom, the blasted thing drowned in it).

I just don't understand how they are getting in. I had thought that itw as an issue with the gap under the door. Fine, i taped up some cardboard and placed a towel in front of that at night... and it still got in. THe only other way is through the vent in the bathroom... Which i could leave on at all times if i did so wish it.

I'm going to submit another report with housing. This is NOT acceptable. I did not have this issue when i first moved in when it was dead hot out, now i do? grrrr...

All sugery items, until further notice, have been locked down in the fridge (honey, brown sugar, and sugar).

Gah!

Thank you. That was very helpful. It was left to the kids. I honestly thought the one girls mom would want to help. Maybe she didn't want Mom to help.

I was thinking that most of these kids will have had breakfast. Because they are done at 1, they will be needing a snack. I have emailed to ask what the milk is for. Maybe just for coffee? I'm hoping.

I'm going to try to remind everyone that we are not a full-service StarBucks. No one expects soy milk and flavored syrups. If we run out, then we run out. A truly starving family can run across the street to Arby's, a large grocery, sub shop, etc.

I'm thinkin' the key word now is roast. :P

And Rolls-Roysters!

I think this is normal when it gets cold. They are looking for warmth. There could be a very tiny crack around a window, light fixture or the fan might be where they come in. They could have ridden in on your clothes or bag even. I'm not sure if you have a real "wasp" or the things many call a wasp or bee. Those are actually attracted to any food, including the smell of meat cooking. I don't think the smell will bring them in from outside. Doesn't sound like an infestation, just a few random bees/wasps/pollinators. Can you see if any of the neighbors are having this issue?

defenently wasps lol

You are probably right though. But why me?

I have set up some wasp traps just in case (take a waterbottle cut it in half, invert it into itself add something sugery and vala a trap). I've got two of them set up just in case. rather have to toss them with nothing in them than not have them and be infested.

I took a walk around the building earlier when i ran some laundry down, saw two spiders (ugh) and no wasps.

Yeah . . . the tournament is held at a school . . . the concessions are run by 10 to 14 year olds . . . they kind of frown on liquor being served by minors at a school . . . they're funny that way. Although, I'm sure it would be a money-maker.

Geography makes a difference.  I'm in the West and Trader Joe's gluten-free bread tastes great and is a better price than most gluten-free breads sold elsewhere in my area.

We have four children (7-14 yo), and our 7 year old was diagnosed with NCGS (though all Celiac labs were positive, her scope at 4 years old was negative so docs in the US won't call it celiac). We have started her on a Gluten Free diet after 3 years of major digestive issues and ruling out just about everything under the sun. Our home and kitchen and myself are all gluten-free. But I have not asked my husband/her dad or her other siblings to go completely gluten-free with us. They are at home, but not out of the home. This has led to situations when we are eating out where she has to consistently see others eating things she can't have and she has begun to say "Well, I can't have <fill in the blank>...stupid gluten."  How have you supported your gluten-free kiddos in the mental health space of this journey, especially young ones like her. I know it's hard for me as an adult sometimes to miss out, so I can't imagine being 7 and dealing with it! Any tips or ideas to help with this?

By the time I was 5 I had my first auto0immune disorder, Migraine headaches, with auras to blind me, and vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound. I was 5 years old, and my stepfather would have pizza night, milling his own flour, making thick cheesy gluten pizza, that I would eat and the next day, I would have serious migraines, and my mother & stepfather did nothing about my medical problems. When I was 17 in my first year at college, I was diagnosed with my 2nd known auto-immune disorder, Meniere's disease. I was a elite athlete, a swimmer, and soccer player. And once again my parents didn't think anything of understanding why I had a disorder only older people get. Now after my mother passed from Alzheimer's disease she also suffered with living with gluten. She had a rash for 30 years that nobody could diagnose. She was itchy for 45 years total. My brother had a encapsulated virus explodes in his spleen and when this happened his entire intestines were covered with adhesions, scar tissue and he almost lost his life. He has 5 daughters, and when I finally was diagnosed after being pregnant and my body went into a cytokine storm, I lost my chance to have children, I ended up having Hashimoto's disease, Degenerative Disc disease, and my body started to shut down during my first trimester. I am 6ft tall and got down to 119lbs. My husband and I went to a special immunologist in Terrace, California. They took 17 vials of blood as we flew there for a day and returned home that evening. In 3 weeks, we had the answer, I have Celiac disease. Once this was known, only my father and husband made efforts to change their way of feeding me. At the family cabin, my stepfather & mother were more worried that I would ruin Thanksgiving Dinner. It wasn't until one of my cousins was diagnosed with Celiac disease. They finally looked into getting Gluten Free flour and taking measures to limit "gluten" in meals. He did nothing but ask for me to pay for my own food and wi-fi when I came to the cabin to stay after our house burned down. When he informed my mother, they proceeding to get into a physical fight and she ended up with a black eye. The is just more trauma for me. Sam had no interest in telling the truth about what he wanted. He lied to my mother that he had asked my husband if I could pay for "food" when he asked Geoffrey if I had money to pay for my wi-fi. My mother hates when he spends so much time on the computer so he lied and said I could pay for my own food. I will remind you I weighed 119lbs at this time. (At 6ft) that is a very sick looking person. Neither parent was worried about my weight, they just fought about how cheap my stepfather was. As my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2014. He had her sign over the will to a trust and added his children. He had no testimonial capacity at the time, so she signed without proper papers. Making this Trust null and void. When I gave my brother my childhood home, my mother stated I would be getting an equal part of inheritance to the house on Race. It currently worth 2.0 million $. I got nothing, and my stepfather has since disowned me b/c of my claim and he knows that my mother would never have left it uneven between my biological brother and myself. She sat me and my husband down, as we lived at the Race Street house and treated and took care of it as our own. My brother took over b/c he was going through a horrific divorce and needed a home so he could get a better custody deal with his soon to be ex-wife who was a Assist DA for Denver. She used the girls against him, and he & I were the primary caregivers. We, Judd and I spent the most time with them pre the divorce. Once Judd moved into the house, he threw all of my mother, grandmother and my family heirlooms out to the Goodwill. Nobody told my mother about this as she was going through cancer treatment and had Alzheimer's disease in her mother and her sister. My stepfather and biological brother took advantage of this matter, as I called a "family council" that my brother just never could make it to at the last moment. All of the furnishing, kitchen ware, everything was in the house my brother just moved into. He had had 2 weddings, I chose to elope b/c my stepfather ruined my brother's first wedding by talking about his relationship with my brother in front of my dad and his entire family, insulting him and having my grandfather leave the ceremony. It was a disaster. My stepfather just plays dumb and blames my father for the slight. I was the only child not to have a wedding. So, my mother and stepfather never had to pay for a thing. My mother had had an agreement with my father he'd pay for college and all medical issues with their kids, myself and Judd. So truly my mother never had to pay for anything big for me in her entire life. I am looking for anyone that has had a similar story, where they grew up in a household that had a baker that regularly milled flour and ate gluten. What happened to you? DId you suffer from different auto-immune diseases b/c of living with a baker using "gluten" Please let me know. I have been looking into legal ways to get my stepfather to give me what my mother had promised, and he erased. Thank you for listening to my story. Jane Donnelly

Possibly gluten withdrawal. Lot's of info on the internet about it. Somewhat controversial but apparently gluten plugs into the same neuro sensors as opiates do and some people get a similar type withdrawal as they do when quitting opiates. Another issue is that gluten-free facsimile flours are not fortified with vitamins and minerals as is wheat flour (in the U.S. at least) so when the switch is made to gluten-free facsimile foods, especially if a lot of processed gluten-free foods are being used as substitutes, vitamin and mineral deficiencies can result. There is also the possibility that she has picked up a virus or some but that is totally unrelated to going gluten-free.
