Hernia From Sneezing?

Okay...TWO MONTHS ago I caught a cold thing that was mostly this horrible DRY itchy hamburger feeling sore throat and spastic horrible coughing that didn't produce anything. My lungs were fine. Well, this went on for a month and a half. Then I got laryngitis for four days. That was fun. Then I sprained/cracked/broke/bruised a rib - I think sprained - from coughing. Finally, about a week ago, the coughing got better so the rib started to get better too. Wake up today and I'm sicker than a dog with this cold -- now mostly in my schnozz.

So, I decide, this is a long illness. I'm going to the doc. So I went and she prescribed some antibiotics -- thinking the almost cured then suddenly worse thing sounded like a possible case of bacteria taking advantage of my lowered system and the nice warm mucousy nose of mine. So, rather than do what I normally do (read the inserts of drugs then refuse to take them), I came home, took the pills, then read the insert. HOpefully she's right, because I'm desperate for some relief.

But now to the crux. I'm sitting in a big overstuffed chair with the dog - so I'm sitting a bit cattywampus so he can be comfy - and I lay down a huge sneeze. OUCH! This made my right lower abdomen - above my hip really - hurt like the devil. Every step I take makes it hurt worse. By now, my back hurts too, and my neck, and I'm just a wreck.

Could I have gotten a hernia from sneezing? If so, should I be able to see a lump, or is the lump internal where the intestines poke through the weak abdominal wall.

Any advice?

-Sherri

I just called my mom and asked her (she is a nurse). She said she would think it is entirely possible to do so, she even explained about tearing holes in your esphophugus (sp)? (throat). Yadda, yadda, long story short, sometimes you can see external bulging sometimes you can't. If the pain persists you need to be seen.

By the way there is a nasty bug going around here in WA that won't clear up unless you get antibiotics. I know a couple of people that have been fighting it for just under a month now. Both Dr.s said it is either whooping cough or bronchitis. I am hoping I will miss out on this one, but I'm not usually that lucky.

Hope you feel better soon!

No answers for you. Just a big bowl of virtual gluten-free chicken soup and a hug.

Hope you feel better soon. Very, very soon. It sounds like you've been through the ringer.

My husband developed 3 hernias from nowhere. My suspicion is that his misdiagnosed celiac left him "fat-less" and his body started "eating" his muscles; first to get thinner was abdominal wall and hence the propensity to acquire a hernia.

Sorry you've been so sick :(

I would say that it's entirely possible to get a hernia from coughing, because it happened to my husband!

Several years ago, he had a terrible cold that turned into days of a hacking cough. He coughed so hard that he got a hernia that had to be repaired surgically. These things also run in his family (his brother and father) so I'm sure his abdominal wall was somewhat weak to begin with.

Lots of warm liquids and hugs to you :) I hope you feel all the way better soon!

I think I'm getting the dreaded crud that is going around, too. Yuck!

Well, said potentail hernia was probably just a muscle spasm or pulled muscle. It's lots better now.

Beware this virus. It can hang on you for quite some time; I have felt partly sick/cold for two months, then it flared with the coughing last month, and flared with the nose thing this month. Arg!

Everyone take their vitamin C/

I'm glad that you're finally feeling better, and the "hernia" was a false alarm :)

You're in WA too? I've heard a lot of folks have this bug. I am on antibiotics now, so hopefully it will get better. They don't do squat for the common cold, though, so I hope it's gone bacterial. I hate taking meds for no reason.

I think it's all the bloody rain this winter that has got folks sick. Anyway, take care. Thanks for the info.

I'm already on antibiotics due to an infection inmy tooth that has come back 4 times now, ergh. I am supposed to get oral surgery on the 4th for it, but I think I'm gonna have to cancel. I am definately getting sick. I hope this doesn't drag on for months.

And yes I am in the metropolis of Everett. Glad to hear it wasn't a hernia. Feel better soon!

I haven't gotten a hernia from coughing, but I did throw my neck out of place with a very bad coughing spell. Had to go to the chiropractor a couple times to get it back in place.

I was outside a fabric store in my car when the coughing started. Must have coughed for ten minutes solid - was getting desperate. Finally, it let up enough so I could go into the store and get a drink of water, which helped, but by that time I was wiped out and just got back into the car and drove home.

Oh I'm glad....I have a herniated belly button. It doesn't bother me much, but it's creepy!

My sister and her girls are sick with mytoplasma upper respiratory 9I think that's what it's called). It's up to epidemic proportions in her town- everyone's on Z Tec. Of course, now I have a sore throat and swollen glands. Waa!

Glad you don't have a hernia.

It is a picture of me driving the red bull truck in the ProRock women's rock crawling competition. All the proceeds go to breast cancer research. I should update it since I drive for Team S&N fab now.

Hi Cristiana! It's so nice to meet you! Thank you for the kind reply I am glad I live in a time where you can connect with others through the Internet. That is a mercy I am grateful for.

In the study linked above, the little girl switched to a gluten free diet and gained enough weight that that fat pad was replenished and surgery was not needed.   Here's the full article link... Hello, @Jordan Carlson, So glad you're feeling better.   Tecta is a proton pump inhibitor.  PPI's also interfere with the production of the intrinsic factor needed to absorb Vitamin B12.  Increasing the amount of B12 you supplement has helped overcome the lack of intrinsic factor needed to absorb B12. Proton pump inhibitors also reduce the production of digestive juices (stomach acids).  This results in foods not being digested thoroughly.  If foods are not digested sufficiently, the vitamins and other nutrients aren't released from the food, and the body cannot absorb them.  This sets up a vicious cycle. Acid reflux and Gerd are actually symptoms of producing too little stomach acid.  Insufficient stomach acid production is seen with Thiamine and Niacin deficiencies.  PPI's like Tecta also block the transporters that pull Thiamine into cells, preventing absorption of thiamine.  Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are difficulty swallowing, gagging, problems with food texture, dysphagia. Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are symptoms of ADHD and anxiety.  Vyvanse also blocks thiamine transporters contributing further to Thiamine deficiency.  Pristiq has been shown to work better if thiamine is supplemented at the same time because thiamine is needed to make serotonin.  Doctors don't recognize anxiety and depression and adult onset ADHD as early symptoms of Thiamine deficiency. Stomach acid is needed to digest Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in fruits and vegetables.  Ascorbic acid left undigested can cause intestinal upsets, anxiety, and heart palpitations.   Yes, a child can be born with nutritional deficiencies if the parents were deficient.  Parents who are thiamine deficient have offspring with fewer thiamine transporters on cell surfaces, making thiamine deficiency easier to develop in the children.  A person can struggle along for years with subclinical vitamin deficiencies.  Been here, done this.  Please consider supplementing with Thiamine in the form TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) which helps immensely with dysphagia and neurological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and ADHD symptoms.  Benfotiamine helps with improving intestinal health.  A B Complex and NeuroMag (a magnesium supplement), and Vitamin D are needed also.

@pothosqueen, Welcome to the tribe! You'll want to get checked for nutritional deficiencies and start on supplementation of B vitamins, especially Thiamine Vitamin B 1.   There's some scientific evidence that the fat pad that buffers the aorta which disappears in SMA is caused by deficiency in Thiamine.   In Thiamine deficiency, the body burns its stored fat as a source of fuel.  That fat pad between the aorta and digestive system gets used as fuel, too. Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test to look for thiamine deficiency.  Correction of thiamine deficiency can help restore that fat pad.   Best wishes for your recovery!   Interesting Reading: Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome in a 6-Year-Old Girl with Final Diagnosis of Celiac Disease https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31089433/#:~:text=Affiliations,tissue and results in SMAS.

Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.
