Stuck In Calgary

Hi everyone,

I'm a friend of Lisa's and she asked me to post this. First of all, about the appointment: Lisa went this afternoon in Calgary and the Dr. asked her a bunch of questions and wants to do a colonoscopy and endoscopy on her. He wants her to consume gluten-containing foods a few days prior to the tests. He'll also get some bloodwork. She doesn't know when these tests will be yet.

Lisa was supposed to leave an hour ago however, when she got to the bus depot they told her there was no bus leaving at that time. So she's stuck at the bus depot until 12:30AM (Mountain Time) and will be back home at 18:00 tomorrow :| If there is anything you want me to tell her just leave a message!

Thanks

Tell her that I'm glad the appointmet went well and that I'm sorry that she has to wait for the bus. The buses out here take too long!

Nantzie Collaborator

Let her know I'm glad the doctor is going to do something. I'm relieved that he didn't just smile and nod. Who knows if the doctor will have any additional answers, but at least he's taking it seriously and re-doing some tests.

I'm sure she's exhausted. Tell her to get some rest and let us know any other details whenever she gets a chance.

Hugs,

Nancy

I'm glad this doctor is doing something. I hope the tests are soon, so you can get your life back.

Guys, I managed to find an internet connection while I wait even LONGER FOR THE BUS. From Calgary when I left at 12:30 am he said I'd get back home at 8pm, BUT I get here to Saskatoon at 4 pm and they say there is no bus leaving until 10 pm. So I'm stuck, and I'll get there at 1 am. When I get back to Yorkton I'm definitely filing for a huge complaint...thats 3 re-routes, all greyhounds fault. D worse yet, my cell phone has run out of power and I have no adapter. @#*($&!(*&@! I just wanna sit around and cry, hardest 3 days OF MY LIFEEEE.

Oh my gosh, megga huggggggs to you Lisa. If I could sit with you and hold you hand, I would.

It hurts my heart that you are doing this all on your own. But, I do know that you are a strong cookie. You know that you have all of us behind you, so you're not really alone, just not in person.

We can talk about your appointment later, let's just get you home first.

It would be so cool if there was a Canadian in the Saskatoon that could take you in and then take you to the bus when you KNOW it will depart.

I wish I could be there to help. But, you are strong. Let us know when you get home.

I'll be thinking about you until I hear back.

Oh no! I'm sorry :( That's not good at all that they delayed your bus. There is a storm starting in BC and making it's way across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. It's already started snowing here where I live in Northern Alberta. I hope the storm doesn't start where you are until you get home. Let us know when you get home.

OH my.... I want to cry too....It's snowing here in Ontario as well. Get home safe.

num1habsfan Rising Star

Thanks guys. That storm will hit before I leave here, thats for sure.. Theres a blizzard/winter storm warning all the way from Saskatoon to Yorkton. Supposed to be 50 km (that 30 m)/hr winds, drifting and blowing snow, and 4 - 8 inches of snow. They are talking about it on the news even (coffee shop has TV on). Lets hope tho for no more stalling :(.

Yeah we are under a blizzard warning too. That's really too bad... Hopefully the bus will be early.

Hugs and prayers for a safe trip the rest of the way home!

yeah I really hope they dont decide halfway home that they'll stop the bus or something, because then I'd really be screwed and I'd have no way to call my parents saying dont drive the 30 mins to get me  . This just seems like a dream :(

I'm glad I left for home last night. The storm here is just insane. The highway is closed between Saskatoon and here. I was gonna take a bus to Yorkton today since dad sure aint gonna drive, but they are all cancelled. Heres some proof of how bad it is: Its snowing so hard and blowing so hard that we cant see across the yard from us--cant see the neighbour to the back yard, cant see across the STREET from our house  .60 km/hr winds. And then til the weekend the temp is supposed to be in the -30s C for highs/lows, not including windchill. BLAH.

Btw, the bus was basically 2 hours late getting to Yorkton. 3 hours of sleep out of 32 hours on the bus, yay for me

I'm sure glad you're safe and warm at your parents' house. Just cuddle up under a warm blanket and get lots and lots of sleep.

I'm glad you are safe at home.

Yeah it is really cold out there. It's -33 here with a wind chill of -45!

yeah same, its in the -40s with windchill and theres a windchill warning saying that exposed skin will freeze within a minute

UGH i'm so frustrated today. Making me hate the fact that I'm even going to school. I thought this place was understanding but I guess I was wrong? I talked to the head guy here since he found me and asked how things went, and hes actually mad that I'm gonna be missing so much school around midterm time. I CANT HELP THAT!

I guess they'd rather see me get worse and fall over dead and worry about showing up for their classes than miss some school so I can figure what what the heck is wrong with me

This IS the worst week of my life :( I wanna cry right now, but I'm at school so...I cant. Lets hope the tests in Saskatoon and Calgary are REALLY soon, so maybe I could feel LESS stress!!

~ lisa ~

......hmm, since when is this post not related to other diseases/researching??

Mango04 Enthusiast

Yikes! That sounds cold! :o

I've come across a lot of professors who just aren't understanding about students needing time off, no matter how valid the reason. It's just a class though. You're right that your health is more important. Hope you feel better soon!

Maybe you have a low  intolerance to Wheat.   Rye, Barley and Malt are the gluten in Celiac disease.  It has always been stated Wheat and Gluten, not just a Wheat intolerance.  Barley will keep me in bed for (2) weeks.  Gut, Migrains, Brain fog, Diahrea.  It is miserable.  And when I was a toddler the doctor would give me a malt medicine because I always had Anemia and did not grow.  Boy was he off.  But at that time the US didn't know anyone about Celiac.  This was the 1940s and 50s.  I had my first episode at 9 months and did not get a diagnosis until I was 50.  My immune system was so shot before being diagnoised, so now I live with the consequences of it. I was so upset when Manufacturers didn't want to label their products so they added barley to the product.  It was mostly the cereal industry.  3 of my favorite cereals were excluded because of this. Malt gives me a bad Gut reaction.

Thanks much Scott.  Well said, and heeded.   I don't have Celiac, which is fortunate.

Do you have the results of your endoscopy? Did you do a celiac disease blood panel before that?  Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day:

It is odd that your Tissue Transglutaminase (TTG) IgA level has bounced from the "inconclusive" range (7.9, 9.8) down to a negative level (5.3), only to climb back up near the positive threshold. This inconsistency, coupled with your ongoing symptoms of malabsorption and specific nutrient deficiencies, is a strong clinical indicator that warrants a more thorough investigation than a simple "satisfactory" sign-off. A negative blood test does not definitively rule out celiac disease, especially with such variable numbers and a classic symptomatic picture. You are absolutely right to seek a second opinion and push for a referral to a gastroenterologist. A biopsy remains the gold standard for a reason, and advocating for one is the most direct path to getting the answers you need to finally address the root cause of your suffering. There is a distinction between gluten itself and the other chemicals and processing methods involved in modern food production. Your experience in Italy and Greece, contrasted with your reactions in the U.S., provides powerful anecdotal evidence that the problem, for some people, may not be the wheat, but the additives like potassium bromate and the industrial processing it undergoes here. The point about bromines displacing iodine and disrupting thyroid function is a significant one, explaining a potential biological mechanism for why such additives could cause systemic health issues that mimic gluten sensitivity. It's both alarming and insightful to consider that the very "watchdog" agencies meant to protect us are allowing practices banned in many other developed countries. Seeking out European flour and your caution about the high-carb, potentially diabeticgenic nature of many gluten-free products are excellent practical takeaways from your research, but I just want to mention--if you have celiac disease you need to avoid all wheat, including all wheat and gluten in Europe.
