I Am So Upset

My best friend is having a theme-type party for her, her roommate and her roommate's boyfriend's birthdays tomorrow night. There are going to be 60-75 people, including all of our friends, there.

I'm mysteriously sick and have had the worst stomach pains and nausea of my life in the past 3 days. And this morning I woke up to find that I'm so ridiculously bloated that I look like I'm about ready to give birth - no exaggeration.

So not only do I now feel too bad to go (unless I feel a lot better tomorrow night), but I cannot possibly fit into any clothes that aren't sweats.

Thanks for letting me vent. :(

Oh Elizabeth--I'm so sorry :( Why does it seem like our bodies let us down at the most inconvenient times

I don't blame you for being upset--I hope that you get to feeling well enough to make at least an appearance at the party.

It's just not fair!

Thank you, Patti. I really appreciate the support and kind words.

For the most part, I'm totally OK with having celiac... I guess I just think of it as my "burden to bear", but it just seems sometimes like my body is out to destroy me!

Are you pretty well recovered after your surgery? I think I missed what "kind" of surgery it was?

L.A. Contributor

I find camommille (spelling?) tea really helps. Also, walking--if you can--does help get rid of the bloating. Try a heating pad on your tummy too. Flat ginger ale and plain chips are my cure all for upset tummy. Good luck--sending you a hug.

It may be a virus, too. There's been a really nasty vomitting-diarhea-sulfer burps-nausea type bug going around here and there and everywhere. It tore through my family and some threw up once, some had vomitting and diarhea, and some had other combos of symptoms. I was just nauseated for a day (for which I am devoutly thankful, as the "Mom" is the one who always has to help everyone else deal with it).

So, though I can't make anything better in time for the party, at least know that (if it IS viral) all your friends will be grateful that you didn't pass it on to them!

I'm so sorry for you. How are you feeling today? We had a nasty stomache bug going around here, too. Sounds like one  . I only threw up once, too. But I felt real gaggy and nasty the rest of the time :( . This is a nasty one. Ginger ale and glutenfree crackers helped with me. Take good care of you.

Jerseyangel, I didn't even know you had surgery. What kind of surgery?

Hugs, Stef

Elizabeth,

Aw, your post made me sad. I know you do so well on the diet, as well as your other intolerances at one point, and this is just crappy. I hope that you start to feel better.

Give us an update on how you are doing and what you decide to end up doing.

hugs to you,

Laura

(try some immodiums---i know you aren't having D, but when I have overall symptoms like that, it helps "stop" whatever is going on...might be worth a shot)

Hi Elizabeth and Stef--

I had a hysterectomy 2 weeks ago. I'm doing fine--just need to give it some time. ;)

Thanks for asking :)

Stef--hope you feel better--that virus sounds awful :(

emcmaster Collaborator

Hi everyone - still feeling pretty awful. I don't think it's a stomach bug unless stomach bugs cause enormous bloating.

Thanks for the advice... I don't think I should take immodium since I have lots of problems with C.

Patti & Stef, I hope you're feeling better soon. Patti, my mom had a hysterectomy not too long ago. Not fun!

Jestgar Rising Star

Sorry you're feeling bad Elizabeth.

Could you just get a cheap skirt with an elastic waistband so you could make an appearance at the party, even if you don't stay long?

emcmaster Collaborator

Thanks, Jesgar. I think I'll probably wear stretchy dress pants and one of the maternity shirts i bought before I went gluten-free... seems so long ago that I had to rely on those constantly!

Thanks :)

Gosh, I'm so sorry you aren't feeling well!!!

Elizabeth, I hope you will feel better by tomorrow! You never know, much can happen in one day. Sometimes I feel absolutely dreadful with bloating, gas and extreme fatigue, and the next day I wake up and feel much better (I can't say fine, I never feel fine). So, don't give up hope. I am glad you are resolved to wear what you have to in order to go, and are planning on going no matter what.

Ugh! I'm sorry. I hope you're feeling better soon.

Thanks again, everyone. Ursula, you're right - things can definitely change in one day. I'm actually feeling a little better - don't know how long or if it'll last, but it sure would be nice.

When I get home from work I'm going to drink a bunch of fennel tea... supposed to help bloating and gas. We'll see!

Much love!

Wow I hope you feel better soon. I hate it when I feel bloated and miserable. I sympathize with you.

I hope you are feeling better, I always seem to get a little sick when I know I have a gathering of some sort....I blame my nerves. I don't think my body ever forgot all those pre-celiac public sick days.

Yes, stomach bugs can cause enormous bloating. My very slender son had a stomach virus at the end of May. He puffed up pretty bad, and wound up having to have his appendix removed because of it. The surgeon said it really is quite common, people just don't realize how much abdomenal/intestinal swelling a virus can cause.

Whatever it is, take care of yourself. Please.

Geez, I hope you are feeling better. There is just nothing worse than not being able to do what you want/plan because of this silly thing we all have. I just wanted to add a bit about the virus thing. I had it all of last week. It was never enough to completly lay me out but it did make me feel like I had been glutened really bad, I swear every symptom in the book (nausea, d, dizziness, etc...). It also kind of came in waves so one minute I was feeling pretty good and the next very blah. I was going insane trying to figure out how I had glutened myself. Finally it was clear when DH wound up with it too that it was a bug. Funny thing is, now he has an idea of how I feel if I get a hold of the wrong good, lol. In any event, I sure hope you get to make it to your party and if not I hope you are feeling better!

Hello, I was very stick,  with flu like symptoms, but my virus panel came back negative and we couldn’t figure out what’s going on. The doctor then added a celiac panel.  Has anyone ever had such a dramatic change?  What are the odds this is true celiac I am going to have an endoscopy, but it’s expensive and I just feel like why can’t the labs be enough?

Eating out in general is full of risks, but this article may help:

This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

I don't live in the US, but based on this thread, I wouldn't risk it:   https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/comments/1n2ehw8/cracker_barrel/   This app is helpful: https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/

I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?
