Ate Bread And Could Feel It Burn As I Swallowed. Then I Instantly Had Reflux And Coughing. From Bread.

Still waiting on my appointment for testing. Still sick with lots of symptoms. All absolutely suck.

Today I was feeling ok. All I ate was a banana and water and felt somewhat ok.

Then at dinner I had a steak, salad and potatoes and seemed ok.

I know I must continue eating bread for testing so I took 2 pieces of bread and ate them.

As I was swallowing I could feel my esophagus feeling almost injured, as the bread sliding down seemed like it was burning mildy.

After I finished eating the bread I had instant reflux, and coughing from the reflux.

Now I don't feel so well. I am sure a little pepto will help the reflux but its obvious something is happening with the wheat.

Lastly I also realized in the last month that I have been having voice problems, my voice has been hoarse and lots of productive clearing of the throat.

Call your dr's office and try to get an earlier appointment. Explain what is going on to the dr or nurse over the phone. If they say they cannot help you, ask to be put on a cancelation waiting list. Then (even if they say you are on a list for cancelations) call in every single day first thing in the morning (the minute reception opens) to ask if they have any cancelations. Be sure to repeat your symptoms and your reason for needing an earlier appointment everytime you have to call in. Be polite but insistant and ask "are your sure there is no way I can get in sooner?" This should get you in within a few days as long as you are calm, polite but consistant about needing the earlier appointment. You do have to have the flexiblity of course to be able to take any time slot available. MOST offices will work you in either first thing in the morning (one apt. earlier than they normally start) or at the end of the day.

I agree with GFM. This is sounding more like an allergic response - not something to fool around with.

This does sound allergic. Don"t eat wheat unless there is someone there who can call 911 or take you to the ER or perform a trach. I' ve always wanted to do one so I'll be right over. ;)

But seriously, if your breathing is slightly impaired, get immediate help before it is more than a slight obstruction.i

Thanks for all the responses. I am feeling average now. Just some burping with burning in the throat and the a cough. My voice is hoarse. And the stomach pains are returning. A long with of course some anxiety. I have also been getting these never healing small acne looking red bumps on my arms and shoulders. Just a total of maybe 5 but they do not go away. I am getting in on tuesday for the blood work, that is the best they can do since it is already the wekend. I might be doing better than I should because I have been taking benadryl everyday.

Uh, oh....looks as though you might have Dermatitis Herpetiformis. If so, then you definitely have celiac. If the endoscopy ends up being negative, have the acne-like lesions tested for DH (the dermatologist needs to biopsy the skin NEXT to a lesion, not the lesion itself). Oftentimes people with DH end up with a false-negative endoscopy, even though they tend to be among the sickest people with celiac.

Testing? It seems to me you have your answer without the $ and pain. Avoid gluten for life. I'd stop eating it if I were you. No need to torture yourself any further.

More great tips, and a good excuse to shop at M&S and also buy more iced buns!   I wish we had an ASDA near us, as the few times we've been to one their gluten-free pasta range seemed very reasonably priced compared to other shops.  Thanks so much, @Russ H.

I hope you are on the mend soon. About 1 in 5 people who contracted chicken pox as a child go on to develop shingles in later life - it is not uncommon. There are 5 known members of the herpes virus family including chicken pox that commonly infect humans, and they all cause lifelong infections. The exact cause of viral reactivation as in the case of shingles or cold sores is not well understood, but stress, sunburn and radiotherapy treatment are known triggers. Some of the herpes viruses are implicated in triggering autoimmune diseases: Epstein-Barr virus is suspected of triggering multiple sclerosis and lupus, and there is a case where it is suspected of triggering coeliac disease. As to whether coeliac disease can increase the likelihood of viral reactivation, there have been several cohort studies including a large one in Sweden suggesting that coeliac disease is associated with a moderate increase in the likelihood of developing shingles in people over the age of 50. US 2024 - Increased Risk of Herpes Zoster Infection in Patients with Celiac Disease 50 Years Old and Older Sweden 2018 - Increased risk of herpes zoster in patients with coeliac disease - nationwide cohort study

BFree bread is fortified with vitamins and minerals as is ASDA own-brand gluten-free bread. All the M&S bread seems to be fortified also.
