  1. This statement is not true. Risk factors go down to that of the general population once a person follows a strict gluten-free diet for 5 years. Celiacs also do not die earlier due to these risk factors. I have many undiagnosed through choice people in my family and they all live to be quite old. There are many undiagnosed for life people out there and...
  2. Since plain rice is a naturally gluten free food, there is no need to sound the siren and no, rice is not as troublesome as oats. There might be cause for concern if you buy rice from a company that also does a lot of rice mixes that also contain a wheat component, but then you could check their policy on keeping food separate during manufacturing. Some...
  3. Joy....you do not do a dietary check using the tTg. Having a still elevated tTg after being gluten-free for awhile does not necessarily mean that you are being glutened. It can mean you have another AI disease popping but you know how hard that is for them to figure out. My tTg remained a little elevated for awhile after I went gluten-free. I was not...
  4. http://www.glutenfreedietitian.com/newsletter/vitamin-e-from-wheat-germ-oil/ Hope this helps to clear up the tocopherol issue for you......it will explain why you do not need to worry about it.
  5. Kareng is correct in that tocopherols pose no threat to a Celiac...no matter how sensitive they are. It is too highly refined. This is another Celiac myth that won't go away. Since gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin, the only products you have to be concerned with are lip products and hand creme. However......from what you have described as symptoms...
  6. I share your frustration completely because not one of my large family has been tested or, I should say, some have but the doctors only checked tTg...one test and then because that was negative, they proclaimed loudly that they don't have "THAT"! I firmly believe that any illness which involves a change of food habits completely scares people and they don...
  7. Yeah...I saw that the other week and yes, sadly, I can believe they have. It's all about money and once something is classified as a disease, they can start collecting insurance money treating it. So all these people who are desperate to lose weight, will jump on the AMA band wagon of drugs and surgeries to re-plumb their innards so they can lose weight...
  8. I'm glad you two caught that mistake in Sara's post! Gliadin is one of the proteins found in wheat and has always been there. Saying it is a brand new thing, never before seen in the world is about as dramatic of a presentation of an error as I have ever heard. No one knows if GMO'd food is a health risk because, quite frankly, Europeans are just as...
  9. Amazing that Canada is having temps like these. And here I was thinking of a possible retirement place to avoid the extreme heat when I get older! It is very hot here in Boston but the humidity level is at 49% also...which is drier than it's been for awhile. I thought it more bearable today than the past week because it was like soup outside then...
  10. I use McCormick's also and I am very, very sensitive to small amounts of gluten so if there were any gluten in McCormick's, I'd get sick. There is no gluten in McCormick's spices so the reaction was most likely caused by something else. Unless you can absolutely prove there is gluten in them, I wouldn't be so fast to brand McCormick's as not safe. Reactions...
  11. Produce washes, which I assume you are referring to the kind that you spray onto produce and then scrub and wash off, are citrus based. I use them all the time to wash produce. There is no soap in them at all because most people would gak over the thought of eating soap or soap residue on food. The citrus acid in the wash will dissolve any waxes on fruit...
  12. I really started to drool bad over the Key Lime Baked Alaska. I really like meringue. Never heard of it with key lime but that'll work. This was an "oinky" fest, Irish, to use another's words. Wish I could be there....we could have had an eating contest. I'm off to have some gingerbread and whipped cream. Not quite Baked Alaska but it'll do.......
  13. The tea's in the Tazo line that are questionable are some of the the herbal tea, which I don't drink. Earl Grey is a black tea that is flavored with bergamot, which is citrus.....it's derived from a type of lemon. No problems with gluten.
  14. Starbuck's Earl Grey is gluten-free and I drink it all the time. Never had a problem in 8 years and I am one of those sensitive ones. Three months is not long to be gluten-free and even those of us who are gluten-free forever can sometimes drink something that won't agree with us and you are left wondering what the hell happened! The only tea besides...
  15. Learn to not be so sensitive. There was nothing over the top about my reply and I understood perfectly what you meant. There is gluten free labeling and then there is gluten free reality. In a company like Trader's, which make no claim to be leaders in the gluten-free world, they may have a "G" logo but that does not mean it is gluten free. They are...
  16. How can you possibly expect anyone who isn't a Celiac or gluten free to be experts on this? I am not an expert on the diet to control diabetes or any other range of medical problems. It is up to the individual to learn about their condition and requirements for the diet, not the rest of the world. I see this all the time on this forum. It's fine to ask...
  17. While eating out has some inherent risks, those risks can be sharply lessened by choosing a better place to eat, where they tend to get the concept of a gluten free meal correct. I want a restaurant that will get it right, not create something that may be sorta gluten free but really not. It's misleading to the recently diagnosed Celiacs who have no concept...
  18. Actually, this is incorrect. An intolerance is not an allergy and does not behave like an allergy. Celiac's cannot digest gluten, period. There can be a delayed reaction to ingestion of gluten by a Celiac for up to 2 days before the mayhem sets in. That is more the norm than an immediate reaction. Immediate reactions tend to be allergies and it involves...
  19. There will always be a certain segment of the population who, unfortunately, are offended by everything. You can choose whether to come here or not but your feelings are in the VAST minority. I am the one who you posted about because my comment of it possibly being a psychosomatic reaction was taken entirely out of context by the overly sensitive (and I'm...
  20. If you react to the smell of toast, and I would assume you mean wheat toast, then you most likely had a psychosomatic reaction. That's what happens with me around strong gluten smells. It happens for many different reasons to people and why anyone would be insulted is.....well..... To the newly diagnosed and still in the learning process....do not...
  21. I am sorry that you seem so offended by a completely normal occurrence that happens to many people...myself included. If I thought the term psychosomatic was so bad, I certainly wouldn't use it to describe my experience but I am not an overly sensitive person...just one who seeks out and learns the truth. That seems to be the problem here more than anything...
  22. Our opinions were not strong, just the opinions of regular Celiacs who know you cannot be glutened by vapors. I never said you were psycho....you read into it too much. Having a psychosomatic reaction is nothing to get upset about.....it happens to everyone at some point. It's just another type of reaction and, I firmly believe, one where your mind is trying...
  23. Psychosomatic reactions happen whether you anticipate a reaction or not and what you described could certainly have been one. I wasn't anticipating feeling nauseous either but it happened. Most Celiacs are sensitive and we all have to follow the same protocol to avoid ingesting gluten so this is not a measure of sensitivity. The reason why many have...
  24. You have to ingest gluten into your gut to cause a Celiac reaction. You cannot be glutened by vapors. Having said that, smells can have an affect on people as I have experienced the same thing but I think it is a psychosomatic reaction. I get headaches and nausea when I smell pizza or any other strong smell involving gluten foods. I view it as my body...
