ARCHIVED Starbucks new gluten free breakfast sandwich?
Gemini replied to Nikki2777's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Geez.....as usual, European Starbuck's offer way more than their American counterparts but we have crazy liability laws here in the States and people are sue happy here so we may never have these breakfast goodies. Nikki.....I would ask to see the inside of the oven they use. The ones they use here in the States are very accessible to people standing... -
ARCHIVED New to the gluten free life, please help!
Gemini replied to amyesnipes's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah...me too but it was all a learning experience. Mostly I learned to not completely trust doctors because, unless they have Celiac themselves, they really don't fully get it. They just don't read the obvious signs people show. Let us know how it all works out and good luck! -
ARCHIVED Celiac disease and osteoporosis
Gemini replied to Palvyre's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That has occurred to me before! We both share many of the same problems. We are a mirror image.....West Coast and East Coast versions..... -
ARCHIVED Celiac disease and osteoporosis
Gemini replied to Palvyre's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Eating out can be tricky and it really depends on where you live and how much knowledge a restaurant has. I am extremely sensitive but can eat out successfully at a few places that are my go to places. I live in the Boston area of Massachusetts and the knowledge here is very high. Probably because of all the teaching hospitals we have. Two of my favorite... -
ARCHIVED Celiac disease and osteoporosis
Gemini replied to Palvyre's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You should be able to improve your bone density then. But please be patient as it can take a while for it to happen. Healing from Celiac will teach you patience so do not become discouraged if improvement doesn't happen right away. Having the extra weight will help with bone growth. You sound like a true Celiac to me! All of these problems you have... -
ARCHIVED Celiac disease and osteoporosis
Gemini replied to Palvyre's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Losing height is a big red flag for bone issues. Also, there is a minimum weight that men and women have to be in order to build bone on your own without doing exercise or every day activities. For women, it is around 126 pounds and for men, I believe, it is 145. So, if you are a thin Celiac, it can be a problem. I fall into this category so I will be... -
ARCHIVED New to the gluten free life, please help!
Gemini replied to amyesnipes's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have both Celiac and Hashi's and the comment about you having too many symptoms for it to be Celiac means you need a second opinion, no matter how wonderful your doctor has been to you. That is the very definition of a Celiac....someone who appears to be falling apart with a number of seemingly unrelated symptoms. Not to mention they have failed to get... -
ARCHIVED Celiac disease and osteoporosis
Gemini replied to Palvyre's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Actually, the bone meds should only be given to people in the late 70's and up age group....those side effects can occur in anyone of any age. With time, they are being shown to not be as effective as claimed. They are heavily used in conjunction with chemo treatments, which unfortunately is needed. But, along with Cyclinglady, I am another post menopausal... -
ARCHIVED New to the gluten free life, please help!
Gemini replied to amyesnipes's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
While it is always better to have an official diagnosis, unless you know nothing about nutrition, you don't need a doctor's advice or approval to eat gluten free. The dietary change is not that significant, unless you survive on fast food and cupcakes. It only requires that you eat healthy and the vast majority of healthy, whole foods are gluten-free. There... -
Doctors in the States can and do test for nutritional deficiencies but testing is only as good as the doctor you have. Some are more aggressive with testing and they tend to be more functional/natural medicine minded. I think it's a crap shoot wherever you live so most people have to ask for it if it is not offered. Sudden improvement is definitely...

A 400 for B-12 is considered low here in the States. They like to see optimal levels of over 650 in order to reduce symptoms and for general health. You might want to up your B-12 a bit more to raise it further. I have never supplemented with folate so, hopefully, someone else can answer that for you.

eye vitamins
Gemini replied to Beecee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most of the time when someone says one thing and another company rep says another, it's just inexperience and lack of education on Celiac Disease. No company is going to tell someone that their product contains no gluten ingredients and then have someone else say the raw materials do. I have been gluten-free for 12 years and am extremely sensitive to tiny... -
ARCHIVED Soaps?! Dish soaps, bar soaps and hand soaps
Gemini replied to Jherm21's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
OCD can be a symptom of Celiac.....really! Don't worry.....the longer you do this, the easier it gets and it will all become second nature to you. Then you can relax a bit. -
ARCHIVED Biopsy for my 3 year old Friday
Gemini replied to Sarahcatherine's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is illegal in the States to discriminate against anyone with a pre-existing condition. No health insurance company can do that. That has been on the books since the ACA went into effect. However, the bigger concern is what they can charge you if you are older with a pre-existing condition. You are correct about not knowing how this will all play out... -
ARCHIVED Soaps?! Dish soaps, bar soaps and hand soaps
Gemini replied to Jherm21's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is good advice but in reality, unless you have an allergy (contact) to wheat or oats in addition to Celiac, then what you use to wash your hands or dishes is not important, unless you do not rinse after washing. You would have to not rinse or not rinse well and then ingest it into your GI tract for it to cause damage. I also use Dawn for dishes... -
ARCHIVED Blood test positive - long wait times for biopsy
Gemini replied to Bizorra's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think if your husband failed multiple tests within the Celiac panel by high numbers, the biopsy is not needed. You should always have a copy of all testing to look at them yourself. If you want the biopsy, I would never wait a long time for one. I would drive wherever I could and get one done sooner. Do you have access to a private doctor and would it... -
ARCHIVED Outrage Over UK Calls to Ban Gluten-free Food Prescriptions
Gemini replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I can totally see giving support to those with limited income but is this really needed for everyone, especially since there are so many great options out there today? I can say with all truthfulness that the gluten-free bread and products I have eaten in Britain are better than what we have in the US. I am constantly amazed at how good they are and how... -
ARCHIVED Tooth Exraction Recovery
Gemini replied to cyclinglady's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My boss had an implant done right after he had pneumonia. I thought that was a bad idea but didn't say anything because many times, people don't like advice unless it is asked for. Well.........nothing went right for him and he developed an infection and the implant failed. They had to remove it and start all over again. I told him he might want to wait...- 22 replies

ARCHIVED Tooth Exraction Recovery
Gemini replied to cyclinglady's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I really worried at first about having a titanium post inserted into my jaw because maybe my immune system would not like it? However, 4 implants later and everything is good. No problems....yet. I do worry about the future and aging issues but decided I can't go through life worrying about everything just because my immune system is more active than others...- 22 replies

What he said! DH is the skin manifestation of Celiac Disease. If you had a positive biopsy for DH, you have Celiac. If you do not follow a strict gluten-free diet, then the DH will not go away and will only get worse. That is probably why the meds are not working well for you. It also can take up to 2 years after going gluten-free for DH to completely...

ARCHIVED Tooth Exraction Recovery
Gemini replied to cyclinglady's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am so sorry to hear of your suffering, cyclinglady. As the recipient of 4 extractions and dental implants myself, I know exactly how you feel. It is a long, drawn out process to fix this but I can tell you that I am completely satisfied and happy with all my fake teeth! It's great....they do not decay! One thing that may have zapped you is that...- 22 replies

ARCHIVED celiac, muscle weakness, bone aches, fatigue... im lost.
Gemini replied to white-star's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
So, I take it you will be doing chelation therapy? If you have mercury toxicity proven by valid medical testing, then that should be mandatory. It won't improve just by removing the filling. I prefer an MD with a functional medicine practice. They seem to have a good balance between traditional and alternative medicine. I think there are far more... -
ARCHIVED celiac, muscle weakness, bone aches, fatigue... im lost.
Gemini replied to white-star's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The whole scare thing over amalgam fillings is really not true. If someone suspects they have mercury toxicity from a cracked filling, then they can test for that. That's what any reputable doctor would do. Find out if you actually have a problem and then they can do chelation therapy to remove heavy metals. It is very rare to actually have a problem... -
ARCHIVED Discussing The Newbie 101 Topic
Gemini replied to psawyer's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
FYI.......for those in the US, you have to have a minimum of 10% of your adjusted gross income to even begin being able to deduct any expenses on your taxes. Unless you are unemployed or earn next to nothing, it's highly doubtful you would have enough to deduct anything. Also, attempting to deduct anything gluten free is probably going to put you in the... -
ARCHIVED Tried out my new Nima sensor
Gemini replied to tessa25's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As with the gluten free diet, there is a learning curve to using one of these and you have to read all instructions on its use.
