ARCHIVED Corn Starch
Juliebove replied to wowzer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wow! I knew most commercial powdered sugar had cornstarch in it but I never realized any had wheat. You can easily make your own powdered sugar in the blender. Just whip it into powder and use it right away. -
We went back to this restaurant on Sat. Our meal was delayed. We'd been told they ran out of the gluten free pasta. Whatever that means. Perhaps they ran out of the cooked up stuff? I don't know. We got our order but it was slightly delayed. They comped daughter's and my pasta. We both ordered the gluten free. On a prior visit, our meal was VERY...

Interesing. Seems very little is safe to eat there. And milk in their sausage? Looks like the only things my daughter and I could eat are the vegetables for salads, bacon, and the apple slices. All the more reason not to go there.

ARCHIVED Appetizers (again)
Juliebove replied to sallyterpsichore's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
A vegetable plate is always a winner. You could stuff some of the vegetables with nut cheese or peanut butter. Hummus makes a nice dip. You could also make Texas Caviar. If you do a search you will find a ton of recipes for that. It's bascially black eyed peas mixed with things like chopped pepper and onion. Chips and salsa and/or bean dip is another... -
My daughter and I both like the gluten free pasta served at the Old Spaghetti Factory. However, I've noticed there is gluten everywhere in that place. Last time we went there we were seated at a booth and it had chunks and crumbs of bread embedded in a groove of wood down under the seat cushion. We got a loaf of bread because my parents eat it. They don...

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Fast Foods?
Juliebove replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Um... Why would you eat a sandwich or cheese sticks when both contain gluten? And IMO, McD's is not a safe place to eat if you have gluten issues or food allergies. The only thing I can think of that would be safe are the apple slices that come pre-packaged. But I suppose even those could be bad if the person touching the bag has gluten on their hands... -
ARCHIVED Snickerdoodles Recipe?
Juliebove replied to holiday16's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Dairy free margarine is hard to come by and is usually made of soy. Clarified butter might be safe for some people with dairy allergies to eat but not for my daughter and I. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Fast Foods?
Juliebove replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think it depends on what all you have at your mall. Some are better than others. My daughter has additional allergies and at our mall, the only thing I can find for her to eat is potato chips. There used to be a potato place where you could get a baked potato with assorted toppings. Not any more. If I were you I'd play it safe and bring something to... -
ARCHIVED Egg, Soy, Casein, Corn And Gluten Allergies?
Juliebove replied to confusedks's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
My daughter is allergic to all of those things but corn in addition to some other things. She eats a lot of rice and rice pasta. Nutritional yeast adds a cheesy flavor. Make sure you buy the dairy free kind. Some has whey in it. She uses rice milk. For breakfast she usually has some energy bars made of cashews, dates and coconut. A good meal or snack... -
ARCHIVED Soft Dough Pretzel Recipe
Juliebove replied to Glutenfreefamily's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've used that kind. Very good. Daughter loves them! -
ARCHIVED Gluten, Dairy And Sugar Free Cake
Juliebove replied to momandgirls's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
It's a false notion that diabetics can't eat sugar. We can. I am one. It all boils down to the total amount of carbs in the food. Cake is usually made of flour and that's carbs. So putting something else in as a sweetener, such as honey, isn't going to affect the total carbs of that cake any if it still contains flour. Using Splenda may lessen the... -
ARCHIVED I'm Going To Starve To Death
Juliebove replied to Ryniev's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Ener-G makes bread packed two slices per package. It's shelf stable and keeps for a long time. Expensive, yes, but perfect for road trips. Open Original Shared Link You can take some of that and a small jar or single serve packs of peanut butter and make a sandwich. This store sells single serve items. Granted, many of them are not gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Do I Really Need Separate Cutting Boards & Cooking Utensils?
Juliebove replied to New Mama's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
For cutting things, I always use a paper plate. If I am doing a lot of cutting, I might slip a cutting board underneath, just to be safe. I've used this method for years. I just throw the plate away and am done with it. -
I don't have an actual recipe, but I make it into a pilaf. I cook it like it says to do on the package. Then in a big skillet, I saute some vegetables in olive oil. I start with some onion, carrot and celery then add whatever else I might have around. Perhaps some corn or peas. Perhaps some chopped green onion or mushrooms. I also add chopped parsley...

ARCHIVED I Invented A New Sandwich - And You're Going To Thank Me For This One!
Juliebove replied to mamatide's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Aha! I've been looking for the pancake mix that takes juice. That must be it! I made some that had orange juice in it and it was soooo good! Thanks! -
Soy sure can cause constipation. When my daughter was born, I wasn't producing enough milk and we had to supplement. I didn't want to give her a milk based forumla since I had been allergic to milk as a child. Turns out the poor kid is allergic to milk and soy as well as 5 other things. The soy forumla made her stool so hard she got an anal fissure. ...

ARCHIVED Hamburger Patties
Juliebove replied to holdthegluten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've never seen any that contained wheat, but some do contain soy. -
If it is gluten you need to avoid and not just wheat, then you should have said that. I am always leery of chicken breast unless I know it is being cooked from scratch. Much of the frozen stuff does contain gluten.

ARCHIVED Ener G Brand Tapioca Hot Dog Buns
Juliebove replied to wowzer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My daughter eats them. I don't think she's necessarily thrilled with them, but she will eat them on occasion. -
ARCHIVED School System Questions
Juliebove replied to ELB3345's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't personally feel it is up to the schools or daycares to provide special foods for our children. You want gluten free, but where does it stop? My daughter is not celiac but she is allergic to wheat, gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, bananas and peanuts. Her friend (in the same class) has pretty much all the same allergies and more as well. Yes, it is... -
ARCHIVED Rice Dream
Juliebove replied to Sinenox's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You won't see the offending ingredients on the regular Rice Dream either. But there is a blurb talking about how they use barley to polish the rice, so this makes it not be gluten free. I would presume the frozen Rice Dream is made from the liquid stuff. But I could be wrong. -
ARCHIVED Rice Dream
Juliebove replied to Sinenox's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They claim the frozen stuff is gluten free but I don't see how it could be. -

ARCHIVED Latest News

My daughter had the RAST test done and we were told that each food has its own range of numbers. You can't just go by the numbers alone. -
ARCHIVED Shopping Options
Juliebove replied to momof2sn's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I order some things from this website here. Some from Miss Roben's. Some from Ener-G. But I am also lucky in that my local health food store has tons of gluten free options. My daughter also has food allergies so her choices are even more limited. I try to get mainly things we can get anywhere because those things tend to be cheaper. Fruit, like...
